Hi lovely green fingered people....

I have recently moved into a new house but it has a very small garden, most of which is taken up with a shed but I would very much like to grow some vegetables, maybe peppers or chillis. Is there anything that I can grow in tubs? It doesnt get much direct sunlight and is quite well sheltered from the wind. And also where is the best place to get them from? I dont want to spend too much on something I might potentially kill.

Thanks.

Hi gemlouise, welcome to the wonderful world of gardening!

almost any fruit and veg can be grown in pots/tubs but if it's shady you might well have less choice.
Leafy veg seem to cope better than anything that needs to have flowers on it...having said that if it has a bit of light at some point during the day all is not lost.

On my patio at the moment, I have tomatoes and peppers in a little growhouse (£11 from wilko's). In bags I have three different varieties of potatoes. In various troughs and tubs I have carrots, peas, lettuce more tomatoes and raspberries.

Don't forget to think higher up. In hanging baskets, I have tumbling tom tomatoes and tonnes of strawberries. You can also grow herbs and other salad veg in baskets.

There's a wealth of places you can find supplies from, but why not try the plant exchange on the Sheffield Freecycle pages (http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/sheffieldplantandseedexchange/messages)
