View Full Version : Torchwood's back!
honeyb35 06-07-2009, 22:08 Anyone else watch it? Enjoy it? Disappointed that we only get 5 episodes this year instead of the usual 13 (blooming BBC :( )?
Is anyone else a perv and sit there drooling at the screen - or is that just me? :suspect:
The Miller 06-07-2009, 22:16 I've watched it and it was brilliant. I was shocked when the titles went up, thought it had only been on for about 20mins, an hour gone! Roll on tomorrow night.
Beakerzoid 06-07-2009, 22:33 It was a huge improvement on the muddled mess of last year. Gripped from start to finish. I'm more than happy that it is only 5 epsiodes this year as it means that it is pure story-arc, and no filler, and with 5 hours to tell the story over perhaps Russell T Davies can actually do something that deosn't end up with a load of techno-babble and a huge deus-ex-machina to resolve it all (something the finale episodes of Who and 'Wood tend to sufer from as they cram the core story into 2 episodes).
It's gonna be a good week.

Absolutely :D
I'm just a letch, less john barrowman for me :hihi:
Yes. That was actually pretty good, now they've dropped all the angst and concentrated on pure story.
Looking forward to tomorrow, now.
WallBuilder 07-07-2009, 01:07 I'm annoyed that it's only on for a few episodes but thank goodness the next episode is tomorrow night, I really want to see how jack get's out of this one though they'll probably keep me waiting.
Sketty24 07-07-2009, 04:02 I'm so happy it's back. Love this show and love Barrowman. I thought it was brilliant. So intense and kept me gripped!
Fist time I've seen it, brilliant.
mr chris 07-07-2009, 16:38 I thought it was excellent. I think current Who is too bloated with 13 episode "vague" story arcs which all seem to resolve in the last 2 episodes.
Old Who did it better with shorter, contained arcs (not counting Trial of a Time Lord).
I still like new Who, though :)
honeyb35 07-07-2009, 22:00 I enjoyed tonights episode  ;) :D
Sketty24 07-07-2009, 22:19 Naked Barrowman just made my life!
Can anyone tell me who plays the man in the brown coat who was detailing the elements making up the poison atmosphere (near the end of tonight's episode)
I know the face but can't put a name to it.
It's hopeless trying to read the cast list.

My thoughts exactly - whilst I enoy new Who, it never satisfies as well as classic Who did (and my aforementioned hate of the quick resolution of arcs with a bout of verbal techno-babble and a swift deus ex machina got tired after the first year, and became silly with the finale of last years series).
Torchwood, sadly, followed this style of 'loose arc' storytelling, with the core story being mashed down into a short two-parter at the end of the season, ultimately being a bit weak, and a bit of an anti-climax.
Tonight's episode followed suit from last night's beautifully, and the story is playing out with enough drama, tension, sci-fi, and humour to keep you gripped. The characters seem better developed too this year (even the support cast), and I really do think that this should be how TW and DW should move on in future - smaller arcs over less episodes (and for all those who still want 13 episodes, perhaps done as 2 or 3 seperate stories of 4 or 5 episodes each...kind of like how DW used to run).
Still, we have yet to see how it all ends this year (and as much as I am enjoying it so far, my faith in RTD to tie up a story is lacking), and then we have yet to see whether Moffat's presence in charge of Who makes it a different animal than the past few years.
Back to tonights epsiode - Jack is certainly being punished this year, isn't he? Gotta love the sly manner they disguised his...erm...dignity with the camera name :)

Thanks re Ian Gelder. Strangely I can't identify any of the programmes listed as where I might have seen him, yet he looks so familiar.

He looked familiar to me too, looking at that list I'm guessing I'll have seen him in the casualty and holby episodes.
PuressenceUK 09-07-2009, 00:25 Is it just me or is this the best thing the BBC have put out in years? Tonight's episode was totally gripping (even though I have to say the plot is so ridiculous, as if a civil servant 3 days into a job would get the sort of access Habiba is getting) but who cares when it's hokum as enjoyable as this.
Wish the alien would stop throwing up mushy peas on the inside of his tank though.
quisquose 10-07-2009, 13:01 OMG a naked Barrowman! and I was out! Man, is he gorgeous!
He's slapped on a bit of weight if you ask me.
I've only been half watching this (it's the wife that's a fan) but have to admit that last night's (4/5) episode was gripping. Good job we've not allowed the kids to watch as well, quite scary for BBC.
Beakerzoid 10-07-2009, 22:11 Oh my giddy aunt! How absolutely amazing was that? Such a brave and daring finale to the week's events on Torchwood, and so many tearful moments. The sacrifice was so upsetting, and shocking, whilst also being so understandable. As for Frobisher's exit....so well played out, and filled with dramatic impact. Those kind of moments really get you wondering what you would do in a similar situation.
Torchwood, for the first two years, always claimed to be the 'adult Doctor Who', but never truely felt like it - all it did which was 'adult' was swearing and naked flesh, the stories were generic Who material. This week's events have shown what the show is really capable of - mature sci-fi drama, hard hitting, and pulling no punches.
bobsyouruncle 10-07-2009, 22:25 Haven't watched it yet, saw Mondays episode, then due to the missus watching lots of reality tv it clashed, so had to Sky+ Tuesdays episode on BBC3, so Sky+'d the whole 5 episodes to put onto DVD so I can watch it over and over and cut out the titles, and make like a 5HR LONG TW DVD.
:banana: :banana::P :P
yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhhhhhhhh.
RazorSHarp 10-07-2009, 22:41 Just finished watching the last episode and thought it was fantastic.. Hope it comes back at some point for a new season

In an interview a few days ago Davies said that he has already mapped out the fourth series, but is waiting for the BBC to decide on whether to greenlight it. They were waiting to see the reception and figures for this series first (source: http://www.airlockalpha.com/node/6436). Good news is that Torchwood sells well overseas, and the Uk figures for this series have apparantly been pretty decent (5.9 million on Monday, with only a small drop off on Tuesday, before a swift increase on Thursday to over 6million. Sources: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a163877/59m-tune-in-for-new-torchwood.html and http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a164448/torchwood-climbs-to-62-million.html).
Pretty good figures for a show that used to get around 2 to 3 million. I think the future of the show is safe.

I've been told this series of Torchwood will be released a week on monday (20th) on DVD
WallBuilder 11-07-2009, 06:33 MUst say I have my reservations, yes there were some really good bits in the final episode like the end of Frobisher but over-all I think it started to Lose something. I'm sounding a bit careful so as not to annoy anyone who may not of watched it yet but can only say again I was not impressed, Would of preferred to see the face of Bo put in his first appearrance if this was the final series for example but then after reading the above posts I suppose Davis is hedging his bets

The face of Bo is Captain Jack in thousands and thousands of years according to a Doctor Who episode.

Its actually released on monday 13th ......yumm
Spoiler Warning
Rubbish, rubbish, rubbish. 4 great episodes followed by a huge let-down that reminded me why I didn't bother watching the last series.
Yeah big moving sacrifice, except isn't the 1st time the kid has ever been mentioned? So they suddenly introduce a character who is meant to be significant in Jack's life (except he obviously isn't) for the sole purpose of killing him off to try to provide some emotional context. Sloppy, sloppy writing of the kind that has seen Heroes' star fall so rapidly.
Gwen's "end of the world" speech seemed to have no relevance except to provide dramatic trailers for an episode where nothing exciting really happened.
And the actual climax? 5 minutes of tapping away at a keyboard and Jack has seen off the unbeatable alien scourge. Pathetic Star Trek-esque techno-cop out.
Overall enjoyable but the finale left a sour taste.

it wasn't that bad, but, perhaps, it could have been better.
that said, how else could the 456 have been beaten?
i'm not sure that there was an alternative that would have been significantly better.
bobsyouruncle 11-07-2009, 15:31 Its actually released on monday 13th ......yumm
But why pay £20 odd quid when I can have it for nowt? :hihi:

So why not lead into a 4th series where the 456 are wiping out humanity and are controlling the planet in some kind of overlord capacity... and actually have a climax which works?
The ending was such a complete downer, and as much as I don't want all singing, all dancing happy endings, a glimmer of hope is always welcome.

I agree with you. I thought the whole series was brilliant. The last episode was quite shocking & I was gripped throughout. We watched the last 3 in one go. I just wish there were a few more of these 5 parters planned.
piskeymax 15-07-2009, 01:53 But why pay £20 odd quid when I can have it for nowt? :hihi:
So that I can perv over JB when ever I want !!
Iplayer and you tube are ok but on dvd I can watch it on long car journeys / when I go into hospital/ anywhere I like really .
The same reason Im buying his concert dvd in november!!:love::love:
zongamin 15-07-2009, 11:50 Going against the grain here.
I only saw the second episode but it just seemed like an insult to viewers intelligence. The pantomime acting, idiotic story and stupid background music (which never stops) - I hated everything about it.
It was like watching a bad kids tv show but with a bit of swearing. Hated it.
Not something I'll be watching again.
That concrete cube containing Captain Jack was way too small, did you see the size of his cell?
piskeymax 17-07-2009, 10:50 That concrete cube containing Captain Jack was way too small, did you see the size of his cell?
Thinking back yes you're right but at the time I had other things on my mind like how mean it was to cover his 'boys' with the camera
That and the fact I had tears in my eyes !

An actor friend of mine knows him very well, you'd need a bit more than a camera to cover up his "boys" A fire extinguisher and 2 space hoppers by the sounds of it.
