View Full Version : View of Mr Strafford - from a Wednesdayite

As a life-long Owl and long term reader of this and other forums I have felt compelled to join this board to air my views on Lee Strafford. Now it seems to me that if anyone dares to be critical of Lee they are shouted down and accused of all manner of things, but knowing I risk the wrath of fellow Owls I will go ahead anyway.

Lee so far IMO seems to be all talk and spin and no action. What has he done so far for our great club? I mean tangible results that can't be disputed. He's great at getting the fans on side, especially the more gullible but I and a few of my fellow Owls are beginning to see through him.

His public relation skills for me leave a lot to be desired. They seem to consist of talking up the Owls to embarrassing levels whilst at every opportunity having a dig at our closest rivals. Now is it just me that has felt a little uncomfortable with this policy? To directly tell another club (Newcastle) where they went wrong and how they should be run is not his job. To compare us to Aston Villa is frankly ludicrous. To keep having little digs at United at every opportunity is unbecoming of a man in his position. To infer we have an area of potentially 4.5 million people to draw on, taking no account of the many other clubs in the area makes him and more importantly us, look silly.

He should remember who he is and who he represents. We deserve better. Yes at least he's an Owl with the club at heart but please Lee, stop talking like a fan and more like the Chairman of Sheffield Wednesday. I hate to say this but his counterpart at Bramall Lane leaves him standing when it comes to public relations. Have you ever heard him say anything uncomplimentary about us? No is the answer. He never mentions us but Lee seems obsessed about what they're up to and less concerned about what we do.

Talking about public relations the "volunteer driven" idea to spruce up our stadium is the most embarrassing thing ever to come out of Hillsborough. At the same time our neighbours release yet more ambitious plans to improve their stadium we're supposed to turn up at Hillsborough with a pot of paint. World Cup stadium? Don't make me laugh!

I'm as big an Owl as anybody on this or any other board but to say I'm disillusioned is an understatement. I had high hopes for Lee but so far he has achieved diddly squat in real terms. No investment (I'll believe the American investment when I see it) and nothing but spin. Yes he's got most of the fans onside but I and others want results.

Time for action Lee.

One from your own - which bits don't you think he's right on? Be interesting to hear cause looking from outside he's got it more or less spot on. Seems like you lot are that desperate you'll believe (and agree) to owt - the posts in reply say it all really

Blades on Owlstalk again! You should know that there are plenty of people on there, mostly blades or, ahem, "acquaintances" of the previous regime who like to do nothing more than get themselves a bit of attention by slating the club that they're pretending to support.

I think the following post from the same thread just about sums up the original poster (in the Owlstalk thread, not the obsessed blade who put it on here!).

So you felt compelled to join up and air these grievances on here.

strange...

Because while you make several relevant and debateable points some things aren't stacking up with me here - i'll share a few of them....

Having one of the poorest sides in our entire history didn't motivate you

Having the worst fan/club relationship ever didn't motivate you

Seeing lifelong fans labelled as Scum, cretins and venomous bitch" didn't motivate you

Seeing lifelong fans sued in the courtoom for "bar-room mutterings" didn't motivate you - including a fan who was critically ill - THE most shameful and embarrassing in the history of this club

Having a boardroom director telling lies publically that forced a fan to defend himself legally thus incurring several thousand pounds of debt didn't motivate you

Seeing the team shorn of its best players yearly didn't motivate you

no....

what motivated you to join and post on this messageboard were a few tame throwaway remarks by the chairman - more than offset by the enormous good and positive work that's been done - culminating in Wednesday once again feeling like our club - and with the real possibility of progress.

couldnt agree more al. even if it as a blade or owl that decided to put this i dont see how anyone can say they were happy with how the club was going while allen was in charge. the blades think allen is great because he was ruining the club, i would of thought owls fans would give strafford a chance, he has done more good than bad so far. i dont think he is great and yes he hasnt been perfect but what chairman is?
also what are these digs he's made at utd? i've only heard him say positive things about them

How long to repair the damage? according to some wednesday fans on here you are not that far behind us.
So what is it ?
Can you remember why the debt doubled ?
A successfull businessman doesn't just double a debt to that tune because he feels like it, there must have been a reason ?
Is it that he was made a scapegoat because he was unpopular ?

David- i think its more the fact that he is de-valueing the chairmans role by activly posting on these internet message boards and when the owls fans are asking him questions they are then getting mad because he's not answering them.

I agree that he has helped stem the tide, but as for turn the corner- we will see- apart from better customer relations i don't actually see any changes at hillsborough yet.

I don't think he has slagged off the blades at all- if anything i thought he praised our business model?

tbh honest i dont think he should be posting on the message boards, unless a very good reason. i know it makes him feel like he is one of us but he isnt, he is running our club and sometimes the things he says and does do make me wonder BUT things are getting better. he has done many things the previous board wouldnt dare do to bring fans back and hasnt drove too many away, which is a start.
yes i only remember him praising the blades buisiness model, dont remember any bad words said

He seems to have a better rapor with the fans but is this the right way to go about it?
I would have thought to mingle with the fans on open day or perhaps chat with the supporters on certain training days would have been more appropriate.
Sometimes and this is not a dig he seems to be un-professional and trying too hard to be a fan. He is after all the chairman of one of Englands bigger clubs.

thats sometimes how i see it. you wouldnt see a chairman of a big buisiness eating etc with the workforce, well not much anyway.i still believe he is doing the best he can for the club and it is only a little issue i have anyway, on the whole he is changing the club for the better, there is only so much he can do.

The blunts are running scared that they've had their moment in the sun.

When we were successful, we won a cup, had a shout at the top flight title, had a few other near misses in cup finals.

Your success at being Sheffield's top club for a decade? One season in the top flight, and becoming the most hated club in England because of Tevez.

You are scared because anyone with an ounce of sense can see that the tide is turning. Your off field activities are dragging you down financially (don't take my word for it, study the published accounts of both clubs)

You'll also see that for having more bums on seats last season, we took more money through the gates. Truth is you can't subsidise free tickets for long, so you'll be back to 14,000 gates, mediocre, CCC team with nothing to look forward to again.

On the other hand, Wednesday will do what they have done quite often before - how long it will take, and if the elusive takeover happens remain's to be seen - but it will be seen.

So, keep regurgitating this rubbish, keep believing it, keep spouting false facts. I on the other hand will look forward to seeing some great players at Hillsborough again, not 2nd rate strikers like Beatie who you had to sell to balance the books.
