Foreign Secretary Jack Straw says he is worried about some of Pakistan's Islamic schools, reportedly visited by one of the London bombers.
Shehzad Tanweer, according to his uncle, went to one of the schools in December wanting to learn to recite the Koran by heart.

Mr Straw said the Pakistan government was also concerned about some of the schools, called madrassas.

He said Pakistan was increasingly cooperating on counter-terrorism.

Of course he does.

He went there a couple of years ago to stop Pakistan and India from dropping nuclear bombs on each other...he still managed to sell both parties even more conventional weapons at the same time though.

So he should worry, but he should worry more about Islamic schools in THIS country. The London bombings are only the start of it. Young hotheaded youths of any nationality/religion are easily influenced and exploited by extremists. These extremists can be found almost anywhere, in mosques and even at BNP meetings.

I gather that the madrassas vary enormously.

The worst offenders for inducing conversion fever, are the old recruiting grounds for the Afghanistan resistance fighters against the soviets. These were, of course, heavily funded by the west in order to pour insurgents into afghanistan, to fight a cold war by proxy.

Now, of course, radicalised self styled freedom fighters are pouring into Iraq instead...

Dialogue with Pakistan is the obvious solution, but it remains a question of Pakistan's state provision for education being up to the job.

No that's Derry ' Baron of Lairg' Irvine's son. Or maybe both of them. String 'em up - it's the only language they understand.

Hopefully never. Vice versa also.

Must be both of them, as Straw's son was definitely an evil druggie cannabis dealer (http://www.ccguide.org.uk/scot2j98.php). I blame the parents.

You can say what you like about the Taliban, but at least they made the trains run on time... err, I mean at least they dealt quite effectively with Afghanistan's heroin producers. (Sorry, just trying to push this back to something with a semblance of the original topic :))
