i used to go every friday night, god ive got dodgy photos but i cant show them cause of my dodgy hair and dress sense. i used to like the little room where they played more r & B tunes. met a couple of boyfriends in there, had a few snogs haha a certain bouncer would never let me in when he was on the door, for being underage but i wasnt, remember having to q for what seemed like forever. do have some great memories though, but i do cringe now. i was devasted when it closed, lol

Cairo's!! What a magnificent establishment! I have so many memories of great nights there with friends when I first started out on the clubbing scene.

There were two rooms, the main room played 70's, 80's & 90's cheesy dance hits whilst the other room next door played the best R&B songs ever.

There were plenty of darkened cubbyholes to sit in with whatever you managed to pull. The atmosphere was always great and you could guarantee you'd meet someone you knew in there. I've still even got my Cairo's card.

Top place! you could always get trashed in 'Silks' next door before going in . . . this later changed it's name to 'Vaultz'.

Didn't Cairo's have a revolving dancefloor at one point? Either that or I was really drunk that night...

Yukky place - remember songs like Jacko's Bad and ofcause Rick Astley. It was nothing more than yer average school disco.

Full of drunk 17 year olds doing Oops Upside Your Head sat on the floor having consumed one too many Babychams.

My bones chill at the memories.

Fantastic!!

We used to give the bouncers £2 and they let us walk to the front of the que.

Fine, fine memories.

If anyone remembers, in '89 I was one of the dodgy very young looking kids who did the fancy footwork dancing... Cringe or what!
Anyone remember 'Bernard' who used to clean the toilets?

I used to go in there a lot when I was younger, I was about 17 when I first went in. I cant remember much about the decor only that it was dark like most clubs are but music was always ok.

Bloody marvellous nightclub but then i'm biased........I used to DJ there between 1984-1988 mainly in the room that played the charty/party stuff.
As well as myself, Steve Knight, the other DJ's i remember were Paul Baron (who was a great DJ), Nigel Filmer and Ian Alvey.

I also DJ'ed in Silks next door and still own a Silks T-Shirt and keyring....Sad isn't it!!!

Probably some of the best times of my life took place in this club.

Remember a bouncer called Fitz and another older guy who was a right miserable old git (wore a wig)..........Do you recall Jo Jo who worked the lighting unit. All blond hair and legs!!

I've got some photos from those days so will dig them out and post at a later date.

Does anyone know of Paul Baron's whereabouts? Lost contact unfortunately.

Fantastic club! I used to every saturday night with the required drink in Silks to begin with.
Didnt stay in Cairos though, always spent most of my time in jax standing/dancing on the steps opposite the dj box.

so many good memories, brilliant.

Does anyone remember when it was halloween and it looked like a whole forrest had been dumped on the floor?

Cairos was a part and parcel of my youth. I used to go between 86-89.
I remember dancing to Never too much Luther Vandross in Jax, that song used to be permenantly on everytime i went in and the other song that reminds me of there is I found lovin'
I'd forgotten about Silks - for some reason my memory of there is hazy.
Never got questioned how old I was and i don't think i went in from being 18 again. Smooching to True by Spandau Ballet! Single hand wave dancing to Soft Cell, Heaven 17 and Human League lol

Didn't they use to serve food as well in there or am i getting mixed up with Josies?

Oh my god, where do I start. Used to go in late 80's. Did have trouble gettin in sometimes tho, however, I was underage at 1st. Used to go in R+B room mainly but found ourselves walking round and round just lookin at talent. I remember Louise who used to do lights and the Woo Yeah posse who used to stand on the steps at the back of room near the dance floor dancing to 'It takes two', how sad. We loved that place and remember wondering whatever would we do with our lives if it closed. Had a few snogs in there but just loved the music and the whole atmosphere. Those were the days !!!!

Yeah, they did serve food in Jax Diner as it was called. Used to get mine free every night.......perk of working there. The other major perks were free entry on your nights off and free drinks when working the decks.

I worked there twice

Around about the time that Sean McGuire and Cleopatra was in the charts
!

I DJ'd there for a few years until it closed - and then again when it became Corporation.

Loved every single second of it !!

Also DJ'd Silks beforehand.

Wish I could go back in time for a night and do it all again just one more time.

Would LOVE to see the pics mate - get em on !!!

Hi, just seen your post re: cairos! God, got some lovely memories of there from around 1987 to around 1995. Had some great times. Used to go every Saturday night. Got to know many faces over the years. Actually met my partner in there in '87. Prefered it in Jax's than Cairos though. Music in there more to my taste. More soul, R n B etc. Never really into this pop stuff which they played in Cairos side.

Nice one Clare! My mate once lost her knickers on the dancefloor in there. They were the ones that tied at the side and we were all killing ourselves laughing at these knickers getting kicked around the floor until my mate realises they are hers!! That very same mate also went into labour (5 weeks early!) while dancing on the same floor(though at a different time) the week before christmas 1993!

Brilliant place, used to get tanked in silks, cairos was good it had two dance floors one that played dance music (brilliant I went there just as all the electro, acid stuff was kicking in round the mid eighties) and the other side that played all the other crap like agadoo and was full of silly people doing silly dances, we used to dance from 11 to 2-30 solid to all the dance music.
Met plenty of girls in the corridor and got knifed by a drunk outside the toilets (cos I accidently knocked him over on the dance floor) still got the scar but he came of worse but only because he was so drunk.
I loved the place, we went to Roxy's once but it was so depressing watching 16 year olds getting of with desperate old housewives and josephines was full of wanna be posers, I remember picking up this stunning women in 'phines' and finding out after 5 dates and a couple of shags that she was a prositute, hah dumped her quick (no I didnt catch anything and she stalked me for 2 months).
brilliant times and a cairos (which was romeos) was the place I had the best times.

Yep, I have to say Cairo Jax was special. The music policy for a towny club was spot on. Loved the midweek college parties. Just another excuse to let in under age but I never complained when I was 16. Also Romeo and Juliets, Saturday day time discos. Phenomenal, atmosphere. the girls from the other schools. Now that brings back some serious happy memories.

I used to run a 70s night there on Saturday nights and an 80's night on fridays, circa early 1997.....great fun amd one of the last of the 'traditional' night clubs that Sheffield had left....it was there back in the 1960's and used to host many many famous live acts, when it was known as the CAVENDISH CLUB until the mid 70's when it became ROMEO AND JULIETS.....

Well if you don’t remember me, I had short hair good looking (lol) and I used to work both rooms, here are some of the other dj names WHO YOU MAY REMEMBER ,,,,,, PAUL B, GARY B (of which there were 2, not related) Ashley Y. The female Dj who worked in jax was J, JAY or JAI (sorry babes cant remember) x
Thinking of it if you don’t remember me then I can’t have left much an impression to say I was resident and the promotions manager for 5-6 years.
The lighting jocks as we used to call them, was Jo in Cairo’s (who went on to be a very good friend and still is.
And Louise in Jax, and no idea what she up to now.
When I started Paul Kinsey was manager who later went on to be the division director. Who I still say after all these years in the trade, was the best manager I ever worked for.
As for the best memories, here’s one PYGAMA JUMP, OH HAPPY DAYS

This has brought back some real memories! I used to go to Cairo Jax (and Silks beforehand) in the early 90's with my then best friend Jen. We used to go every Friday and Saturday, plus most Wednesdays to the student night which was called The Curious Orange Club. God knows how we could afford to go out so often!

I remember the DJ in the Cairos side well but can't recall his name, although the guy who did the lighting in there was called David Gibson and looked exactly like Chesney Hawkes. I had a massive crush on him at the time as I was really into Chesney back in the day (well I was only in my teens!).

Had some fab times there. I have photos somewhere but would have no idea how to upload them (plus everyone would see my dodgy 90's hair, lol!).

Hi Ian,

How are you doin? I remember you well from those heady days at Cairos. Still some of the best days of my life.
You came in just before Paul (and eventually me) left.
I remember the day i came in to clear my own records out as if it were yesterday.
At the time i remember being really gutted that the management hadn't offered me the residency but i don't think i held it against you.
It just grated slightly that i had been Paul's right hand man for the best part of 3 years and yet they didn't even consider me.......I don't think i was that crap a DJ, was I????
I virtually did the whole of one New Years Eve because Paul was so drunk he couldn't work the decks.
Anyhow, after i left Paul did offer me a residency at a club in Bradford but i decided it wasn't for me. At the time you could have cut me in half and Cairos would have been written through me....Other gigs didn't interest me. Probably the wrong decision looking back, but hey.
Tristan, remember him, tried to persuade me to come back to Silks but i didn't accept after having a bit of a scrap with a lad called Shaun who worked on the bar in Silks.
I don't DJ knowadays unfortunately. Last gig was around 1992 but miss it like hell.
I got married to a girl i met in Cairos not long after leaving but am divorced from her with 2 kids (18 and 16). I remarried (not to her though) in 2004 and have a 20 month old son.

I still have some tapes that we used to record direct from the decks in Cairos and one of them does feature yourself as DJ. My next project is to transfer them to CD somehow.

I do recall Paul Kinsey. Like you say, a top bloke and great manager....unlike the regional guy Tony Spragg. Also remember JO JO, the Lady Jay and Louise.
God, they were good times.
Do you know of Paul's whereabouts these days??

I will attempt to get those photos uploaded but the scanner is a little temperamental at present. Keep an eye out for them.

Hi Steve
Thanks for the reply, I have to say you have jogged my memory, and names are being put to faces I had totally forgotten.
I did rate Paul as a personal friend and one of the finest in the game, but found when he left it was if he had forgotten all he had worked with, thats understandable as I am just as bad. So sadly I have no idea to his whereabouts.
I would love to hear one of those tapes, the thought of hearing myself all those years ago is making me cringe (lol).
Glad to hear you are well and hope Paul is too.

I went to both Roxy's and Cairo's quite a bit in the early - mid 90s. I would say of the two that I prefered Roxys but that was then and i am older and wiser (well older) now.

I remember Roxy's used to have a couple of dancers (I think one was called Joanne) who used to dance on stage in cycling shorts. Anyone else remember this?

I have mixed feelings about Cairo Jax.
I've had some really good times in there, but it was also the scene of one of the most violent experiences in my life.
Back in 87-88 I was 12 or 13,there used to be an underage alcahol free club on a saturday afternoon.
I was supposed to meet a friend outside but I arrived late. My mate might have gone in or not showed, can't remember. Anyways the bouncers were'nt letting anymore in. So I was stood outside waiting for my friend to come out, when lots of kids from lots of different schools (alot older than me) started showing up. I knew a few from my school and I asked them what was going on.
Well apparently some guys from Shiregreen the week before had beaten someone up in a rasict attack,so all these older kids had come down to get them. So I was rather looking forward to a gang fight with my peers on some shiregreen racist scum. So when we got word that the shiregreen gang was coming out and there was supposed to be fifty of them, the adrenalin started pumping let me tell you as there was prob about the same outside.
Suddenly the shiregreen boys were coming up the steps with this big guy leading the way and he looked well up for it. What happened next still disturbs me to this day.
The bouncers for some reason shut the doors behind 2 of the leaders of the shiregreen gang, locking the others inside and leaving these other 2 stranded outside!! 1 of the guys had wings on his feet and ran off after only catching a couple of licks with about 10 guys chasing him off into town.
The other guy was not so fortunate. He was kicked up and down the street for about 5 mins, before having his head stomped and finally jumped on by one guy in paticular. I saw the guys head squash against the kerb,he was bleeding from the nose, mouth and ears.I saw the light go out in his eyes,he looked dead, like a manaquin or a doll.
Just then a police car came up the street,it was quickly surrounded by the mob and was attacked. The copper was terrified and reversed back the way he came very quickly, clipping someone in his haste.
Seconds later 2 riot vans burned round the corner and everyone (me included) ran off down that subway tunnel that led to the hole-in-the-road.
After that I jumped on a bus and was physically sick on the backseat.
It took me along time to get over it,I remember shaking terribly.
It was reported in the star that the guy that got stomped was on life support for 6 months before it was finally turned off,he died.
I'm sorry this is such a horrible story, but I feel it's one that should be told.

I'm not trying to bring down Cairo Jax, like I said I do have some fond memories in there as a kid and in love, dancing my arse off.
I do still sort of blame the bouncers for shutting the doors on them and doing nothing to stop it.

That's terrible. I can't remember ever hearing anything about that although it's a long time ago. Not surprised you've mixed feelings. Don't suppose you'd be forgetting something like that in a hurry - even worse that this poor kid had to die.

Chipbuttie, I don't remember hearing about this, it sounds horrific.

I do remember hearing about the bouncers at the penthouse (rebels/ dollars etc, above burtons on haymarket) throwing a lad from top to bottom of the huge flight of stairs there, and leaving him paralysed.
(they also refused a friend of mine, entry, he was blind, they said he was a fire-risk... He said " You **** what?? What do you mean? You think I might spontaneously combust or summat? !!??!?!?"

I sort of remember hearing about this in the papers at the time, but like you say not the fault of Cairos. The bouncers maybe should have let the others out of the club but wouldn't that have risked further injuries or even deaths?

I witnessed the odd brawl inside the club but it was usually dealt with swiftly by the staff. Always caused by some guy having far too much to drink.

Let's not dwell on the bad things........Cairos was, and always will be for me, the best club Sheffield has had.

Ian

I know what you mean about Paul. He could sometimes get wrapped up in his own little world and forget about others but he was always very good to me.
Gave me my first real break at Romeos, as it was then known, and he always put extra gigs my way.
Before he gave me a chance i was DJing for free at a local youth club with the odd fee paying gig at the Hallam Tower Hotel. He taught me so much.

That tape with you as DJ must have been one of the first nights you did in Cairos because i remember i was expecting to be recording Paul and myself but he didn't show that night and you came through from Jax to DJ in Cairos side.
I have another tape where Paul announces you as the new DJ in Jax.

All the best Steve K......Those photos should be on this site very soon.

I'll tell you what, the DJs in those days knew how to put on a show. They always used to show you haw to do the dances for various dances with assistance from one of the professional dancing birds who were podium dancing.

I remember one night I was in there with my brother, there was a women's underwear floor show, which consisted of a show on the main dance floor with loads of women dancing a coreoagraphed routine wearing just underwear. Nothing rude it was all very classy..

That is a mad story. School rivalry was very rife in those days. One thing was for certain. That Shiregreen lot was no match for Earl Marshal. (Pitsmoor)
I remember confrontations with them at Concorde sports centre, swimming baths. They fought they were bad in packs of ten but even when 5 of us turned up, they did not want to know. Yeah Shiregreen were known red necks back in the day. God knows why because they were low lifes.
I used to go to the Saturday afternoon school discos at Romeo's and Juliets and the college parties midweek. I never saw any rivalries because I was too busy chatting up girls from other schools. That was the thing then.
The only gang I had a phobia for was the dirty skinheads on the balcony of the markets. They were vile, again very weak one on one.

Does anyone remember the afternoon Christmas office parties that Cairos, and before that Romeo and Juliets, used to have usually on the last working day before the Christmas break?? They were from 12 noon through to 3pm.
Before working at Cairos i used to work on Snig Hill at the Police HQ building (office worker i hasten to add) and it was the highlight of the year when we took the girls from our office across the road for a few drinks and a boogie.

Can you remember the woman who worked the cloakroom? Her name was Carol.....curly blond hair, possibly a bubble perm.
God, i had some great chats with her when i was on my break. Always used to give good advice when any of us had girl trouble and the like, which was quite often.
She used to live at Stannington, i think, because she was always in the same staff taxi as me on the way home.

Yes I remember Carol - think it was the hair! She used to sit in the ladies sometimes as well and everyone knew her. Always there for a chat! Bet she's seen some sights in there! I have many happy memories of Cairo Jax on friday nights out with the lads 'on the pull' but probably the funniest thing to happen was in the mid 80's when Steve Wright from Radio 1 at the time, made a personal appearance. We were all crowded round the front of the stage when he asked for a volunteer. He picked me. 'The man with the light perm' he said which was the state of my hair at the time! He then poured a bucket of sludge over my head which must have been made of porridge and stuck to every part of my body. Was a great laugh though!!! Great place.

I've just read this thread! Wish I'd read it when it first started!

Cairo's was THE place to go in the late 80s.

I preferred the Jax side, and can remember Ashley the DJ and Louise very well! And also the 'woo yeah' posse! lol

Jax was excellent when Acid house became big; and after that I remember people going mad for 'Voodoo Ray' and anything by Soul II Soul.

I can remember being in the Cairo's side one night, and I think they were holding some kind of Mr CairoJax competition - the bloke who won (Dave I think he was called) asked his girlfriend to marry him that night, and as far as I know, they are still together. (they were a few years ago as I used to see them round and about).

And another time when Anthea Turner was there - throwing Crunchies into the crowd - gawd knows why!

What about Louis? The Head doorman? He barred me so many times! (because he knew I wasn't 18). I used to go in Silks, and then join the queue desperately hoping that he wouldn't spot me in the queue. He used to let me get all the way to the front, and then say to me "You're not coming in".....I was mortified!

Saw him a few years ago when Yates first opened - he was on the door there - we had a good laugh and a joke about it.

Fitz too - top bloke - one of the nicest 'bouncers' I knew.

I've still got a Cairo's mug - without any chips either! I must have moved house 6 times since my Cairo's days, but that mug has been moved with great care! Gawd know's how I got it!

I would have been going in Cairo's between 1988 and 1990 - as far as nightlife goes, they were the best years of my life!

Great thread brought back a few memories.

First went to Cairo's in 1985 when it was then Romeo & Juliets. It was a student night, mid-week either Halloween or Bonfire night.

Seem to remember in the late 80s our Friday night pub-crawl was start in Alexander, Garden (later Market Tavern), Brewer on the Bridge, Hen & Chicks, Mucky Duck, Three Cranes then into Cairos. Obviously not great boozers now. Into the 90s our pub crawl went from the otherside of Cairo's - Grapes, Dog & Partridge, Three Tuns, Golden Ball, what use to be Wig & Pen, Three Cranes, Cairo's.

Always remember going in cairo's after England lost to Germany in the 90 world cup semi final. Watched the game in Cross Keys at Handsworth, then we got a couple of taxis up town to drown our sorrows in Cairo's. Midweek so it was practically empty in there but remember doing the England/neworder dance thing at some point that night in Cairo's.

Met my first serious girlfriend in Cairo's, so have happy memories on that front as well.

Whisper it but i always preferred Roxys.

I have some great and not so great memories of Cairo's in the late eighties. We used to alternate between Cairos and Roxys on each Saturday night. I remember when Sonia played at Cairo's. I was told by many that I was a lookalike at the time and my mate kept shouting Sonia come out of the loo, there was a gaggle of girls stood outside the cubicle all waiting for an autograph.:loopy:

I remember loosing my stilletos on Jax dancefloor and them turning up with the doormen at the end of the night, my feet were filthy by then:hihi: I remember the corridors were so dark inbetween, there was always some shifty looking bloke waiting to pounce on you.

I only went a couple of times - around about 1989-1990 ish... It was chavvy before the word chav existed, so in many ways was ahead of it's time:hihi:

Played really bad music, mostly chart stuff with a smattering of Abba and Stock Aitken and Waterman... It was a scruffy hole really, had a weird mirrored tunnel between the two rooms, the smaller room had a cafe bar just off the mirrored tunnel - meant to have a 50's theme if I recall? Red plastic and chrome featured heavilly if I remember right?

The main room had a dance floor you walked down a about 5 steps to get to, and all around were cubby holes with battered sofas for copping off on...

The bouncers were the old school kind - that is, ex cons looking for a fight and more likely to start on men who were less likely to punch em back! First time I went I was 15 and on a bus trip - remember a man being dragged out with blood all over his face, looked like he'd been glassed... The bouncers were really going at him, he didn't stand a chance - I remember thinking he looked like someones dad! His Mrs was crying and begging em to let him go - the police were all over them within minutes... Wasn't my first time in a night club, and I've seen plenty of fights in them before and since, but that was the worst and it was the bouncers doing the punching...

It didn't change inside at all when it opened as Corporation, but it seemed better, even though structurally it was really run down by then - maybe that was down to the music and the fact it was full of scrubbers! Don't remember the cafe bit when it was corp though??? Maybe that got ripped out?

Take Care
