Is it yours? Where roughly is it ? And not really a great time to open is it, affinity/sanctuary/dempseys/lions lair/xes all now gay as such, is there space for a 'gay club'? When looking around the gay scene it probably attracts less than 300 people in total on a weekend night, and less than 50 in the week! Though i had heard rumour of Fuel making a return but nothing definite.

great news. agree, no drag please. somethjing different to add a different draw would be good, me and my O.H. dont bother with the scene much exactly BECAUSE it's all those same few people referred to above by James- and on the whole the existing scene tries to compete for the same crowd. But thereare those of us looking for something a bit different, so bring it on.

There's a new club called Fontana on Attercliffe Road - Speed Queen is held there now. Is this the new gay venue?

I wish you the best with your new venture, as long as you keep it cheap and clean you should do well.
( I wont mention any names but some of the gay pubs/ bars/ clubs have a reputation for being a bit dirty and it definitely puts me off).

i do, i prefer the non labeled venues, most of the gay venues in the uk are not very nice at all. i dont go to any of the gay venues for the reasons that i mentioned, however if there was a tastefull relaxing clean well presented wine bar type venue, with good food, comfortable mixed environment with no drag queens and screaming queens wearing belly tops performing britneys dance routines step for step to music loud enough you cant speak, then i may visit.

i was born and bred in sheffield but have moved to pastures new but get back quite often, I am probably going to get shot down for this but dont some of the gay community spend ages whinging about the lack of gay scene in sheffield, then when they hear a new club is opening, get all excited, asking a huge amount of questions, spreading rumours that will almost certainly hinder the place, then go on the first night, spend the next day slagging it off to anyone who will listen and then crawl back to dempseys without giving the new venue any chance to improve on the first night?

its just a theory, sheffield has so much potential to be a great place for the gay community, but alas most seem willing to settle for an out of the way bar at the bottom of the poor

I was going to say the same thing... unless you want places full of young bitchy queens, drag queens and really loud music so you can't hear yourself speak, there really is bugger all for older folk (30+) in Sheffield (apart from Dempseys which has put all the other gay bars/clubs to shame by outlasting all of them! I have a lot of respect for Dempseys - whatever the naysayers say!).

Sheffield really needs a bear establishment, somewhere older guys/hairy guys/'normal' guys can go/chat/drink/relax. There's certainly the market for it in Sheffied because all of us bugger off to Mancheste/Birmingham at every available opportunity, so something closer to home would be most welcome.

We have taken a new premises on Arundel Gate in the centre
The new venue can offer much more than the current one, It is on 2 floors so we can offer a classy bar upstaires open 7 days a week and downstaires will be a new nightclub open Thursday through to Sunday. We are starting from scratch with this venue which means we can build it how we want. We have been granted a 6 oclock license for the venue which gives us a lot more flexibility. There will be a dance floor on both levels offering a choice in music. Building work has already started and we aim to open in about 6 weeks time (give or take a few days) Affinity in Campo lane will soon be shutting in the next few weeks as we transfer some of the fixtures and fittings to the new venue.
The venue is also free of brewery tie which means the drink prices will be good with lots of promotions.
We hope to see you all there and will keep you informed of the progress.

The circle bar shut because after the first few months it only tended to make money when the academy had a gig on as a lot of people found it too far from the main pubs (ie on west street) so didnt bother to go to it. I know this as I work nearby to it and know someone who worked behind the bar there.

my only concern with all the activity is the market is getting heavily saturated by "gayness" atm everyone seems to be opening at the same time (or there abouts)

Your all going to be having opening hours roughly the same and with the late licences everyone is getting your just going to end up with alot of "Open" empty / dead bars.......

Just hope you have something unique to pull in the trade like lions lair does they seem to have grasped the whole scene and taken it on differently and it works.

I hope you dont try and mirror what other have and fetch the scene crashing down due to there being to much choice of the same thing and not enough people to support them all!

I work opposite the mulberry and there is still a to let sign up on it and there is no evidence of any building work being done on it, so is anything actually happening with it at the moment.

The rear entrance of Mulberry must have originally been a public entrance, its got pub-style doors and windows, and old signage re. 'satellite TV' in the bar, etc. but it looks like it could do with a real facelift...

Affinity have drag acts, the wonderful Anji Back, I am sure you have heard of her, so go there when new place opens, we dont need another pub with drag acts.

"cheap booze" well Sanctuary have cheap happy hours every ngiht, so you could go there. Lions Lair have put their prices down as well.

Anway Adam, good luck with your new place, and lets hope you last longer than f.a.b. did, but I feel town centre is the place to be. :)

I am really surprised no other gay venue have picked up on this and started a bears night, I am sure there is a demand for this.

Returning to topic, I passed Mulberry yesterday and still can't see any sign of physical work starting; I also noticed that the original Affinity still has furniture inside and lights on. I would imagine that everything is still on schedule for opening in September, anyway; these things just take time, as there is a LOT of paperwork involved in getting a new licenced venue approved and launched...

I just passed and scrutinised the Mulberry premises as per usual last Friday, STILL no evidence of fitting/building work either inside or at the back facade; I also hear off the record that some initial interior work had not been of the correct standard and might have to be re-done in order for the rest of the work to proceed. Other than that, I know nothing else; I do miss the old Affinity in the appropriately named Campo Lane; maybe they might re-open there after all? Who knows? ('the way out of a rose')(Roald Dahl, 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory')

Hi, despite all the rumours on here the new affinity is still opening, I know it has been severley delayed due to changes made by health and safety to the ventilation system but it is still definately going ahead, I will take the to let sign down this week for those who are worried by it! ( I wasn't going to bother until the exterior was being done).

I passed the other day and there was no edvidence of work and the back entrance was boarded up.

I think this thread has merged into 2 debates.

Seems Sheffield never seems to catch up, they would all rather go to Corp or Leadmill which is full of LGBT students nowadays and then to Dempseys for their last hr on the way home.

The midweek scene in Sheffield is dead, the only place that does anything is Dempseys and its stalwart customers keep it going.

Hi Chris 101, The Mulberry is actually bigger, its 5000 square feet in total which is alot bigger, each floor is about the size affinity is now and there are 2 floors.

It's an idiom. The fact that the comment was made on an internet forum is irrelevant. People can still 'lose face' on an internet forum. If someone makes an assertion that black is white, and evidence is provided to the contrary, then it would be fair to assume that the person making said assertion would have lost face.

Regarding Affinity being 'knocked' - I've seen quite a number of people having digs on various threads. I didn't particularly aim my comment at this one. It's just nice to be able to quash the rumours, once and for all.

What matters is that Affinity is opening, it's opening in the heart of Sheffield, it's going to be bigger and better than ever, and it will give people yet more choice over where to go.

Good News!

I passed the venue last week, and WORK IS WELL UNDER WAY! Hoardings have been put up over the front entrance, so a fair amount of remodelling is likely to take place, and from round the back, you can see that they are doing a lot of work on the upper floor; drilling, new floor, lots of builders going in and out. From what I've heard, it will be opening sometime in December, but we'll have to wait for any further details of the dates from Tony....
