View Full Version : 1394 port??? can anyone help please
Hi,
Can anyone offer me any advice? I am trying to upload a film from my camcorder onto the programme Studio 9 and I cannot. It keeps coming up with "initialization error" that the cable needs to be in the 1394 port, I have never used this programme before and don;t know what a 1394 port is. I have the camcorder lead into my usb port. can anyone tell me more of what I need to do, where am I going wrong and what is a 1394 port?
Thanks,
Jane.
1394 will be your Firewire port.
I am not an expert on this sort of thing, but as I often say 'Google is your friend'...

Looks like it needs a Firewire port rather than USB?

Hi,
Thanks guys, where would I buy one of these from, how much are they? and are they easy to fit?
Thanks again,
Jane.
Also.................. my PC runs windows xp and is 3 years old will it be fast enough for this firewire port?
You sure you don't have one? It will look similar to your USB port and will probably have a firewire symbol (http://images.apple.com/lae/imovie/images/capture_firewirelogo.gif) next to it.
Meaks - will have a look.................
Meaks - sadly no I haven't so where can I get one from and will it run with my system?
Thanks,
Jane.
Here are a few of them, not saying I would recommend getting them from ebuyer but it will give you an idea of price.

The card should run on your system. It will mean opening it up and plugging a card in to a free pci slot which you should have. You may struggle to do much video editing though as that is pretty heavy on resources.
Pretty much any IT retailer. Example (http://uk.insight.com/apps/productpresentation/index.php?product_id=BELNA03NYK) .
System requirements for that one are Windows 98/2000/ME/XP, Pentium II 266 MHz, RAM 32 MB so you shouldn't have any problems if the software runs OK.
What camera do you have does it come with a firewire cable?
March - thanks for that.
Meaks - the camcorder is a canon MV830 and it only came with the usb cable :-( you say it;s heavy on resources, well what I am wanting to do is just take out of my film about a 2 minute film piece for my Mum's website, could I do this with my pc? I know the piece I want without having to download the hours worth of film.
Thanks,
Jane.

What is this studio 9 programme ? I would have thought the Canon software that came with the camera, would do everything needed. Although I am not up to speed with digicams.
DV out is firewire. Not sure what cable you'd need though.

Studio 9 is purely editing software.
Yeah you are right dv out is for uploading to PC .
It has both DV (firewire) and USB.
Studio 9 is capturing, editing and DVD authoring software - it does the capturing via firewire.
Like you say if it is supplied with a USB cable I would imagine it comes with some basic capturing software?
muddycoffee 14-07-2005, 20:17 My mate has an I-pod and you can use it connected to firewire or USB, but it is much faster downloads on firewire. Also the firewire cables are slightly different.
I got him a Firewire card to plug into his motherboard so that he could use the I-tunes program at full capacity.
Many motherboards have firewire built in, my newish Gigabyte motherboard has it built in, but I have put loads of PCs together for people and all of the cases I used in the last 2-3 years have a firewire port in the front, and I had nothing to connect it to inside.
cgksheff 14-07-2005, 20:52 After checking with the Canon literature, I can confirm that you will need Firewire to download recorded 'film'.
The USB is only to download single pictures (jpegs) and short clips (motion jpeg) (I guess the length of clip will depend upon the size of the SD Card?) that are stored on the SD Memory card.
There may be a possiblity of playback recording onto the memory card, but I doubt it. The manual may shed light.
Can you re-shoot the short piece and record to card?
Thanks very much to all who have replied. Yes there is cannon software and yes the only cable was the USB one. What I am going to do with the advice you have given me I think is contact a PC shop tomorrow and get a firewire cable as I guess this is what I will need for the future. cgksheff - I can't re shoot the film as it's of an anniversary party, sadly. By reading all your posts I guess the way to go is with a firewire, plus I shall probably need one for next time anyway.
Thanks once again for all your help, much appreciated,
Jane.
forgot to add - studio 9 came with the package so thopught I would install it too along with the cannon software.
