I got it from a woman who had lost her husband, and she couldn't bear to look at his car. Her brother was selling it for her. I paid $2500 cash. A fortune for me at that time. I had the engine rebuilt, and had it painted the original gold color. (someone had painted it a god-awful canary yellow) It was beautiful. I drove that car for more than four years, until I was hit by a drunk driver on the 880 freeway in Oakland, Ca.

The CHP kept telling me how lucky I was, that I had somehow escaped injury, (they took the guy who hit me away in an ambulance) but all I could think about was how bad my car looked!

I paid to have that car towed to four different body shops in the Bay Area, and they all said the same thing..."we can't fix it, honey." "Let the insurance company total it out, and you buy yourself another car".

I was so brokenhearted I took the bus for months. By this time I was married, so I took the insurance money and used it as a down payment on a new truck for my husband.

I haven't owned another Camaro since. But if money were no object, I'd buy myself another one just like it.

Beautiful! I have to admit, some of those 1960s/70s Fords, although they were probably pigs to drive and probably required the annual production quota of Texas to drive half-a-mile down the road, are pretty classy numbers in a kind of retro-ironic way.

Personally, I'd quite like a Galaxie 500 (http://www.dearbornclassics.com/galaxie.html). I'd have the biggest, craziest quiff in the world and drive around with my rockabilly mates listening to the Reverend Horton Heat singing the best song about divorce ever written:

Sierra, that's a great car. I'd hate to think how much it would cost in petrol to run over here in the UK though. When I fill up my car it costs about £35 ( $61 ) and it's only a 2 litre ( 120ci ) engine.
And that I think is 5.7litres ( 350ci ) ..
Even fancy cars all seem to look the same these days, that one is really something special.

They were actually very reliable cars. But you're right, fuel economy wasn't one of their strong points! Thank you for the kind compliment, Muddy. I agree, it was something special. I hadn't thought about that car (except fleetingly) for ages. This thread got me thinking about it for the first time in a long time.

I'm trying to remember how much it used to cost for gas. The year it was wrecked was 1985. Gas then was about $1.35/gallon? It had a 19 gallon tank, I think. That sounds right. About $25-$30 to fill up. Gas mileage was dismal. I could be driving around town, and literally watch the gas gauge going down.

Still, I miss it. Maybe I would have sold it eventually, but being forced to part with it before I was ready was like a death in the family. I was so ticked off at the irresponsible jerk who hit me! Everyone said, "cut the guy some slack." "He damn near died!". I'm still just a little angry with him. That's not healthy, is it?

:) Thank you Sierra. It has to be said the Americans do huge over-the-top cars like nobody else, and the 60s and 70s were the heyday for that kind of thing. But by the time I visited California, in 1988, everyone was driving Mazdas or VW Rabbits.

By comparison, I used to drive a typically British 1970s car, an Austin Maxi (http://auta5p.car.cz/katalog/austin/austin_maxi_01.htm), also identical to the picture although perhaps mine was slightly more crapola-brown. Oh, and the bonnet (hood) was maroon after the original one blew off (yes. Scary) at high speed and I had to pick up a replacement from a scrap yard. It was a horrible car in every respect, and I was almost glad when it burnt down (with me inside). Still, it cost me £50 and did me OK for two years, so I can't complain.

Oh, and Reverend Horton Heat fricken ROCK!

I'd have an Audi RS6 and use it to tow A BSB spec Rizla Suzuki GSXR1000 to Donnington everyday.

i would be happy with a fire engine with my own personal fireman driving me every where every woman fantasy least its is mine fantasy lol
