View Full Version : Humdrum boring routine a.k.a. "my life"
What do people do to help cope with the daily routine that is life ?
Get-up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed, get-up, go to work, come home, etc. etc. etc.
It's so tedious.
There must be some way of making it more interesting.
Wind people up, it makes every day more interesting and varied, if you think I am joking just ask Kirky :D :D :D
foxycoxy 14-07-2005, 09:08 There probably is a way of making it more interesting and only 1 person in the world knows!! And he's not letting on because then everyone will want one!!:)
LordChaverly 14-07-2005, 09:12 'If you are not happy with your life, you can change it'
This was the discovery of Mr. Polly in H.G.Wells' famous story.
To give an example of the routinised dinner you mention. Why not start with the coffee, move on to the desert, then the main course and finish with the soup?
This is known as the principle of existential transformation though reverse order.
Do a good deed each day.
What about helping some old people out? If you can put up with the smell of p*ss, then I'm sure Owdlad would appreciate being wheeled around the bloke a few times... he doesn't get out much. :heyhey:
I also find being rude and taking the michael helps to pass the time! :D
Apollo_C 14-07-2005, 09:14 Pretend to be Mr. Creosote from Monty Python's "The meaning of life". That Works! :P
It's not that I'm unhappy as such, it's just wears you down doing the same things day-in day-out. I actually get about 4 hours a day to go mad and do what I want.
Apollo_C 14-07-2005, 09:17 Say hello to one complete stranger every day, and don't forget to smile! Some will think you've just escaped from a ward, but some say hello back, and actually even converse... its true!
Quit your job and enjoy everyday of your life, poor but happy, walking in the countryside, seeing friends doing things you've never done before
redrobbo 14-07-2005, 09:30 I've had this sorted for sometime now. I talk to strangers with one-liners! (It's not quite an arrestable offence.....yet!).
Examples....
1. Uniformed Somerfields shop assistant at check-out. "I saw you in here yesterday...... do you come here often?"
2. Stranger at hole-in-the-wall cash machine. "Excuse me, I'm in a hurry - could you get my money out with yours at the same time to save me waiting?"
3. Woman on bus seat next to me, whilst stuck in prolonged traffic jam during recent bomb scare. "Looks like we're here for some time, so good job I've got some cherry tomatoes, cheese and bread we can share - did you remember to bring the wine?"
By the end of the journey, I was looking at family photos with the lady on the bus!
Go on, try it, make your day less tedious.... talk to a stranger!
I couldn't be happy being poor, I like trainers, wine and steak too much to give them up.

I was tempted to ask the man on the tram this morning if he would go and stink like a mouldy skunk at the other end of the tram.

quit your job , stop eating meals, start grazing, stay up until 4am, sleep late, become nocturnal, develop a drug habit, lose your home.
All these things will help you break out of the dull routine of a nice safe job/life combination.

It had better not have been the man with the cut off trousers and sandals on, with the bright red hair.... :P

Dear oh dear, not even a good try. You silly little boy.
You might like to devote some of your time towards contributing towards the sum of human happiness, spreading the joy that is in your heart, being responsible for acts of great personal kindness etc. Perhaps you might add to the gaiety of the nation by joining a Yogic flying association, or a radical left of the neo-left, agit-prop, communal street puppet theatre collective? Have you tried brass rubbing? Ludo? Some of the dances young people engage in these days at their 'rave ups' seem such fun, like the 'Lindy Hop' and 'Funky Chichen'. Before long you could be a 'jive-ass mother******', as I believe they are called. Maybe you'd prefer Morris Dancing, or ancient Briggantian fertility rites [Wincobank Hill after 9 oclock on Wednesdays], if you are more traditional in inclination?
Believe me, Nick, there are many pleasures to be found in life...
The rubbing sounds good :)

My apologies Owdlad, my skills in the art of the mikey take pale into insignificance next to your own... but to be fair you have been doing it a lot longer than me! :P
redrobbo 14-07-2005, 10:00 I see Apollo_C has also recommended talking to strangers. Phew, I don't feel so barmy now after all!
Here's another suggestion to break up the tedium....
National Poetry Day is on October 6 this year. Start preparing now by finding poems, familiar and unfamiliar, copying onto Word, and then print copies. On National Poetry Day, blue tack them around the office or workplace, leave in pigeon holes, or simply hand out on the bus. Go for it!

i know what u mean bud, proper gets boring sometimes, i jus try doing different weird stuff, like i dunoo.. turn my phone of for a couple a days, go to gym a lot more to see results, buy more clothes, MAKE time to relax, get time off as much as poss... have holiday.. jus try n stay away from negative stuff, then it'll seem less repetitive..
1. Do something creative:
Paint, write, make DJ CDs, play an instrument, design your dream house, design game levels, grow stuff, cook, take photos and turn them into art, keep a notebook of interesting things, remix a favourite song, make your garden beautiful, make wine and beer, invent games.
These are the pretty ordinary things that keep me and my friends happy. But for me the most significant thing is playing an instrument - it has everything: You get pleasure playing with others or alone, you surprise/amaze yourself, you achieve meditative/altered mental states while playing, it's relaxing and energising, there will always be more to learn, the skill never becomes redundant.
2. Try to work out How You Should Live
Investigate morality, philosophy, science, the nature of reality, love, your real needs, and how to be happy. Live by the answers you find and always keep questioning them.
The one thing that came out of my youthful investigations was that the industrial level of animal abuse in the world is wrong and easily cured - by people not being involved in it. Being vegan has really improved and informed the last 15 years of my life in ways far beyond the obvious.
Cheers
Swan_Vesta 14-07-2005, 11:48 I used to find that the repetative mundanity of daily routine would really get unbearable. My way out of it was to come home and get p*ssed watching the tv, time went quicker, the boredom was quelled but I found that it was getting far too regular an occurance and I was turning into a complete tw@.
Nowadays I accept the routine but find other ways to occupy my time, I attempt to break things up by doing different things like going to the park to feed the ducks, taking in a film etc. I try not to have too much routine when it comes to my social life/free time as the rigid structure of my working life and free time associated with that is more than enough.
I still enjoy a pint but not as a habitual part of my day - what starts as a means of breaking up the mundanity quickly becomes part of the routine and becomes a canker in life.

Instruments are there to be abused along with the modern wonder of technology that is amplified sound, preferably played at a volume that Motorhead would be awestruck by and at distortion levels that make President bush sound truthful.
Write poetry about the evils of capitalist society, wear a beret with a communist badge in, smash macdonalds windows. hurl bottles at the police, grow your hair, get laid, drink s**tloads of absinthe, make an effigy of your boss and publicly burn it whilst chanting 'down with satan' (Fargate is best for that kind of performance art), get laid, get a drug habit, go and start a fight with a gypsy on a Romany campsite.
All these things will enrich and enhance your life and turn you into a superhero.
Richard
there was a time in my life a few years ago i felt like this. really really bored of being stuck in the same old routine.
so i quit my job, moved away from home, went to university, had the time of my life for three years, went travelling (more of which i'm doing next year) and fell in love :D
I think the main thing you can do is to have something to look forward too. My is to look forward to my travels next year. It makes the here and now seem much easier to cope with when the going gets tough. :)

There is and there isn't. By that I mean - there isn't a way of getting out of the working week routine [it's what keeps you in good clothes, eating nice food and drinking good wine] but there are ways to make it seem less painful.
I work flat out during the week but always remember to keep my weekends as my own [the reason I never post at weekends]. Some weekends, I'll go to a new city and do some shopping. Others I'll visit friends and have a meal with them. Some I just sit around and be lazy [ie. reading the papers, eating good food and napping on the sofa].
And what's to say that your weekends can't be even more adventurous? Quick evening flight on Friday to a European city, dump the bags in the hotel, quick shower and a drink / late dinner. 2 nights there and catch a later flight on Sunday evening. A fantastic weekend! It doesn't even have to cost all that much! Why not try it Nick? Life's what you make it.

If it wears you down doing the same things day-in-day-out, then stop doing the same things day-in-day-out! You have a whole four hours to yourself everyday, so go mad and do what you want!!!!
Suggestions to shake up that routine a bit...
1) Catch a movie.
2) Feed the ducks
3) Telephone or vist an aging and forgotton relative.
4) Go for a crazy night on the tiles
5) Visit an art gallery
6) Ditch the steak and eat something you've never tried before.
7) Organise a themed night out (Mexican, Italian) ect.
8 ) Borrow a dog and take it for a walk. Makwe sure you throw lots of sticks.
9) Have a hot, candlelit bubble bath.
10 ) Spend time engrossed in a good book.
11) Make something.
12) Clean something that hasn't been cleaned for years.
13) Mend something.
14) Devise an elaborate surprise for someone.
15) Book a holiday or arrange a day trip for the weekend.
16) Research your local history.
17) Research your family tree.
18 ) Knit a scalf - winter's coming you know!
19) If you have a partner, buy a few treats from Ann Summers and then go to bed very very early! :D
20) If you don't have a partner, buy a few treats from Ann Summers and improvise!!! ;)
21) Draw a picture or cartoon of your best mate and present it to them in an elaborate ceremony.
22) Talk to an animal.
23) Wake up early and watch a sunrise.
24) Watch a sport that you wouldn't normally watch. Make a point of finding out the rules beforehand.
25) Take an evening class and learn a new language.
26) Listen to some music you wouldn't normally listen to.
27) Look through some old photos.
28 ) Try meditating.
29) Read about a religion that interests you.
30) Customise a T-Shirt
31) Make a three-course dinner with all your favourite foods - just for yourself.
32) Change you tipple of choice for an evening.
33) Eat a slice of brown toast.
34) Play a fun and childish boardgame.
35) Listen to a different radio channel. Not Chris Moyles though!
36) Write the first chapter of your life story.
37) Make a list of your top 10 best moments ever.
38 ) Make a list of 50 things to do before tou die. And do them!
39) Go to a comedy club.
40) Try a new and exciting form of transport.
Enjoy
If I've read Nicks original post right it seems it isn't he's stuck for things to do - its that he only has four hours a day to do them.
Unfortunately, unless you like being poor than you aint got a choice but to go to work. Dont make it any less tedious I admit, but there you have it.
Mebbe its time for a week or two off?? That did me the power of good last time the ol' 9 to 5 was starting to do my head in

Thats why all the activities I suggested can be done in four hours!!!! (apart from 19 and 20, which could take longer if you really wanna go for it :heyhey: )
And number 33 should only take a few minutes!
The majority of us only have about four hours a day to spare, and a lot of us have even less.

I know. Sucks don't it? :(
If you all spent less time on the net talking about life and get out there and live it instead then maybe you wouldn't be as bored.

Actually Lee, I talk on the net to make WORK more interesting. I love my job, but I work long hours without a lunchbreak so occasionally a bit of light relief on the Forum makes things more interesting if I'm have a slow day.
I rarely post outside working hours, because I'm too busy doing all the wonderful things in my previous post.
Or some of them anyway!!!! :suspect:
And what are you doing on here anyway??? Shouldn't you be 'out there living your life' as you suggested? ;)

Yes. Although tonight I have nothing more interesting planned than drinks with a work collegue. We're supposed to be "brainstorming", but I suspect it will descend into p****d-up man-bashing, so it's all good! :D
Oh yeah.... And 1 hour 40 mins before hometime :(

I think you'll find that once your sanity goes things become a whole lot easier.:hihi:
Try looking at life in a different way.
I'm on the straight and narrow tonight.
Wednesday is karate night!! Then tea and a bath and it'll be time to set the 6.45 alarm again.
I was gonna make some "man bashing" gag but with this being a family forum an all :D

Get on your bosses computer and go onto word - select auto correct from the tools menu. In the replace box type "because" and in the with box type "because [bosses name] is a w***er".
Hilarious.

Fancy that - we both get up at the same time! I try to vary my alarms for extra spice, so at least I have the uncertainty of which noise will drag me from sleep! Bird noises from my 'natural sounds' alarm is my favorite.
It's like a flock of seagulls nesting in your bedroom!!!!

please see owdlads post at the begining of this thread :D
i only said it to wind people up ! :P
no offence meant :)
i too am on here to make the work day more interesting !
I use my mobile to get me up - deliberately pick the most irritating ring tone it has then put it far enough away so i have to get up to turn it off.
I've found if i use "nice" sounds I lie there longer than I should.

Yeah, you're right.
I listened to my fake birds twittering for about 10 minutes this morning before I could bring myself to move.
The noises gets progressively louder so you have to turn it off eventually though. But not before my pet rabbit, who sleeps in my room, has begun to fear she's under attack from a stampede of angry bluetits!!!
I don't cope well with routines. I'm lucky that my job doesn't require one. I've spent the last two weeks laughing at a group of grown blokes pretending to be other people, then traveled to Bracknell, Guildford, Brighton and Portsmouth. Off to Southend next week, and I haven't been there before... Don't have early mornings to worry about either!
Since I started this thread I have changed a few things around and life is more interesting now, my problem now is fitting everything into the time available.

read books (especially those that encourage escapism), watch stimulating films. Talk about interesting things in work, go to work nude (erm maybe not that)
have an affair with someone at work. That'll liven work up:thumbsup:
