Silver Surfer,
Never donate these days because it is all a big fiddle a massive confidence trick, and a gigantic rip off, providing cushy jobs for fat cats.!!!
1) Do you donate to charity?

3) If no, why not?
N/A
4) Using 3 words how does donating make you feel?

1. I sometimes rid myself of a few loose coppers into the charity box, but as a general rule, no I don't.
2. The money I do give goes to the RSPCA, Cancer Research, Christian Aid, Oxfam, and others. Depends where I am, and the charity box available.
3. The reason I don't really give to charity is because I believe that charity begins at home. I need to make sure I can get by with the little money that I have before I start giving it to the more unfortunate souls.
4. Good, kind, rich.
5. Animal is normally my first choice, but morally I guess humans should have priority.
EDIT: I'm a 22 year old male BTW.
1) Do you donate to charity?
Yes.
2) If YES, who to and how and why to your chosen charity?
Standing orders, direct debits and direct from pay to several charities mostly animal. The animal charities because the recipients do not have an opportunity to raise funds for themselves.
On a more ad-hoc basis for human related charities.
3) If no, why not?
N/A
4) Using 3 words how does donating make you feel?
It's my duty
5) Would you rather donate to animal or human related charities?
Animal related but any other when asked directly.
Please could you also just indicate your gender and age (approx)
Male, over 21.
Please keep your posts coming!
It doesn't matter if you don't donate or not.
Thanks!

The amount of cynicism in this world really annoys me. There are still good people around you know.
1) Do you donate to charity?
2) If YES, who to and how and why to your chosen charity?
3) If no, why not?
4) Using 3 words how does donating make you feel?
5) Would you rather donate to animal or human related charities?
1) Sometimes, depends on amount ive got in my pocket
2) Cancer Research, Poppy Appeal, RSPB, Some others.
3) N/A, but I generally dont give to ones ive never heard of/dont agree with, or people forcing you to give.
4) Err, "good and proud" i suppose,
5) Human
18 (ish), M
1) Yes
2) As many as I can - both time (fund raising, volunteering) and financial. Recent charities/campaigns - Free Tibet, Shelter, Oxfam, Cancer Research, Big Issue, Children in Need, Comic Relief, Operation Christmas Child (spent time some years ago packing shoe boxes onto trucks in a warehouse, fund raising etc.), FoE, Greenpeace, and hopefully VSO soon. I'm also looking into sponsering a child or two, from a developing country - possibly exiled Tibetan children. Does Ethical Consumerism etc. count too?
Why these charities? Because I don't like to see others suffering - human or animal. I'm not particularly financialy advantaged, but consider myself to be in a position where I may be able to help others, and therefore should at least try. I only wish I could do more.
3) n/a
4) "It's not enough"
5) Both - all species have as much right to be here as any other.
Edit - Sorry, forgot to add - 25, male.
Skatiechik 02-12-2003, 10:16 Charity begins at home.
In other words no I don't donate to anything!
Martin_s 02-12-2003, 10:57 I donate cash occassionally but most of all I donate my time to a national student rag project, so I do it by proxy... ie: I provide the means for students to work, co-operate, organise and fundraise more effectively...
Costs in terms of time and money but the outcome is a far greater amount of money reaching charities, so I'm happy :)
As for the cynical crud above... I'd suggest a little more research into the aims and objectives of charities, why they hire skilled and motivated professionals to increase their fundraising potential. It's a lot more cut throat than you could imagine but there are a large number of reasons for it... Ignorance of the facts is no excuse though so either shutup or get your facts straight..
Thankyou...

Hope you weren't referring to me. NO i do not donate to charity, which the question was asking. Never have done and never will!
I however do provide my services in terms of volunteering and have spent a number of years organising and running event's for youths in my local community before I moved to Sheffield.

Nope.. wasn't referring to you...
.. and as you note.. time is far more valuable than money.. shame that some people forget that.. :)

Enlighten me.
Agent Orange 02-12-2003, 13:30 1) Yes
2) Cancer Research. I run the odd half marathon to raise money, ran 3 so far and hope to do far more. Why - cos I have lost family to cancer and my other half is in a high risk breast cancer catagory.
3)
4) Pride, fulfilment and happy
5) Would you rather donate to animal or human related charities? I would donate to both as both are pretty important areas of work in my opinion.
Male, 27.
OK, I'm gonna give this a whirl too!
1) Do you donate to charity? Yup.
2) If YES, who to and how and why to your chosen charity?
I donate to NCDL via affinity card. I love animals, I have 4 cats, when one of my cats was just 1, someone shot and maimed her. She lost a leg. I am now in the process in raising some money via my dissertation with the money going to Cancer Research UK- I lost immediate family to it.
My family likes to donate old clothes, bric-a-brac to the salvation dump bins outside the supermarkets. I also ocassionally give to the ppl with tins on the streets.
3) If no, why not? N/A
4) Using 3 words how does donating make you feel? Altrustic, happy & proud.
5) Would you rather donate to animal or human related charities?
At, the moment, NCDL, RSPCA & Cancer Research UK charities are my top priorities, I can't choose.
23/female.
Does anyone else have affinity cards? I spoke to my dissertatin tutor 2day, and he said it was generally a card that the older generation had!
Plus, are you aware a lot of charities sell new things. Some things are specially made to be sold in charity shops...
Another question....For those who donate clothes etc to charity shops.....would you shop there too?
Thanks :)
Yes, I buy from charity shops - generaly books, but also Fair Trade stuff (tea, coffee, snacks etc.) from Oxfam.
Good luck with the dissertation and fund raising too, by the way.

did have quite high opinion of halevan, needs to open eyes
any reutable charity will disclose all details of spending etc.
I wondered how many of us contribute to charity in any way. Which one you give to? And the reason you choose that one?
It can be in any way you don't have to say.
Children In Need and Comic Relief, because they show you the results, so you know your contributing to a good cause.
Local charities, where I know the money will be used well and when I have spare change I usually pop it in the charity box at McDonalds.
It irritates me on Fargate, when you can't walk from end to end without tactfully dodging people either trying to sell you something or make you contribute to something. If I want to, I will come to you.
Also, I read somewhere that some charities are recruiting (e.g. students) to collect for them, which means a substantial percentage of what you give goes on their wages.
Although I still believe the charities still get more than if they don't take this route.
*Twinkle* 06-05-2004, 07:23 I give up my time to help out, instead of giving money... First of all, I don't really have the money to give away (being a student and all) and secondly, If I were to give any, how could I be sure that it actually got to where it should have been going??
Thats why I volunteer... I've helped out at the Children's hospital and also at a primary school... :)

Whoa... as this is currently a hot topic of debate at the moment I thought I'd best clarify..
In the main, if you see a student collecting for a charity with a bucket or collecting tin, then I can pretty much guarantee that they are doing it voluntarily as part of their uni/college Rag group...
The clipboard brigade asking for direct debits or those who tend to come round pubs at night are usually paid collectors or "chuggers" as they've become known..
Most student rags are getting more and more hacked off at people telling them they're being paid when in fact they're not so hopefully that's corrected any misunderstandings there..

> 1) Do you donate to charity?
Yes.

Ocassionally lose the shrapnel in a charity box. Ocassionally buy 'The Big Issue' (does that count??). Depending on where I am and how I'm feeling I will put money in a box if stuffed under my nose. I will pretty much always sponsor someone if asked (regardless of the cause). I organised a small backgammon tournament the other day to raise some cash for Jessops baby care unit. Some friends have had call to use there services recently. I will always give to cancer related charities and the RNLI.
> 3) If no, why not?
N/A

Human.

SaxonLeigh 06-05-2004, 14:16 1) Do you donate to charity?
yes
2) If YES, who to and how and why to your chosen charity?
I donate a monthly amount to the NSPCC (I’d give any amount of money to help children), every month I alternate the donations between RSPCA (the actual centre in Sheffield & not the charity centre) & PUP (prevent unwanted pets), any change (1p’s to £1) I get in shops goes in the collection box (if one), I’ll give change to people with boxes on the street, I donate to help a hallam child, children in need & comic relief. I’ve taken part in sport relief, I’ve done quite a bit of charity work from making Christmas boxes for 3rd world children, to packing medical supplies on to planes (people say charity begins at home but the way I see it is that the 1st world (us) that caused 3rd world debt so we should pay for it & at least help to make a difference). I also do a lot of absails for RNIB (theirs one coming up on sat 19th a June at SUFC Bramall Lane if anyone’s interested PM me); I do this cus it’s a real buzz & a fun way to make money. I also organise bring & buys & garage sales, any money from those go to one of the hospitals in Sheffield, I send any unwanted items to charity shops, I also shop at charity shops sometimes.
3) If no, why not?
N/A
4) Using 3 words how does donating make you feel?
No different
5) Would you rather donate to animal or human related charities?
both
Please could you also just indicated your gender and age (approx)
I’m female & I’m 20 y/o

Yup certainly do....... in fact, worth giving the childrens society shop in hillsborough a plug, they sell counterfiet designer clothes that have been donated to them by trading standards.
so you can get that trendy look at a fraction of the price and help the kids at the same time.
i also support the childrens hospital

yes cos they are advertised as not genuine, unlike your market trader who tries to sell you them as the real thing.
rather than just destroy them, trading standards pass them on to charity which is a good idea i think
