We had a rotastak cage that our hamsters managed to chew through and they escaped. The original hamster cages are much better, just bars and a tray. Hamsters need to be able to climb, and you can hang all sorts of toys from the bars etc. They shouldn't be kept in tanks as this can lead to breathing difficulties.
If you are after a hamster cage I have one for sale at £5. I'm in meadowhead :)

i think he would chew through the plastic tray

They can't seen as the bars come inside the overlap of the tray. I've got 7 hamsters at the moment, all rescues. When they first came I popped them in the rotastack cages that someone gave me, only to find i'd got 4 hamsters on the loose as they had chewed their way out:o. They are all fine now in their bar cages. I've kept hamsters for 10 years in bar cages with no escapees :).
Just let me know if that's any good for you

But if she hasn't got loads of money she isn't going to want to have to buy a new one is she? Besides, glass tanks are no good for hamsters and can cause respiratory problems or the tank could overheat. :)

nox are yours syrians or dwarves? Or mixed?

I only ask because in general people prefer to have hammies in tanks than barred cages - especially syrians - as I was informed on a hamster forum that 'it's not natural for hamsters to climb' well I'm very sorry but Rocky finds it very natural!

If he's likely to chew the cage, I would be tempted to get him a glass tank though as bar chewing can be quite dangerous to their health and he's like to do this if he chews his cage at the moment.

I have one in a tank and one in a barred cage. I personally prefer the barred cages but wouldn't recommend it if he's likely to chew it. I've also had to rescue Rocky after he nearly lost his foot, having got it stuck in the bars and hung there all night :(

Good luck finding one - I don't have anything I can offer you I'm afraid but you could always try asking Emma at Gerbil Rescue if there's one to borrow in the meantime?
