View Full Version : Suspect Texts From Apparent Mobile Service Providers
Agent Orange 13-07-2005, 11:57 This week I have received 2 texts from a company claiming to be my mobile service provider telling me that I needed to contact them with regards to my handset. Anyway, thinking nothing of it I called the number to discover that the person on the line wasn't in fact from my service provider, but from a private company (im guessing a mail order type mobile phone shop). My mobile contract is up for renewal in August and that will entitle me to upgrade my phone so I find it rather odd that not only has a different company managed to get my phone number, but also has knowledge of when my contract is due for renewal.
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Agent Orange 13-07-2005, 18:33 i guess no one then!
Yep, I had one claiming to be from Orange, as usual I delete them.
I suspect everything is a scam :suspect:
Kirsty_87 13-07-2005, 18:35 no :) i havent anyway. but i did get a text from an unknown number yesterday asking me if i wanted to WIN a video mobile phone and it gave me a number to call at £1.50 per minute!
I have had something similair and I used to just delete them, until I checked my phone bill and every text they were sending cost ME £1.75, so check your bill and see if these bum holes are charging you.

They once did that to my mum, it was charging her for each text they sent. I think it was something to do with dowloading some new ringtones for "free". She had to contact 02 to get it stopped. To this day we still dont know where they got her number from
My hubby has been getting phone calls from companies asking him to get his new contract though them. He asked how they knew his contract was due to end and they said they ave a database between all the companies. Apparantly they only only store names, mobile numbers and dates.
He is currehtly with Carphone Warehouse who denied all knowledge of this database, but the other companies got the details from somewhere.
he didn't recieve any text messages though.

Coincidence. I get them all the time, but I delete them
Mobile numbers are easily 'guessed' - like fax spam. Unless of course they know your name too :suspect:

I’ve heard of this before. A friend of mine had a call about her Orange contract coming up for renewal. They said she could have some s****y new handset for £20 or there abouts. So she paid there and then with her debit card. Funny enough the phone never turned up and when she called Orange they had no record of any call.
Either these people where very lucky and guessed her renewal date, name and supplier or they had access to the Orange database, either with or without permission.
Never respond to text messages like that, or give any details on the phone if say your mobile operator calls you. Always ask for a number to call them back.
The odd thing is, all these companies tell you to keep your account details etc secret and never give then out to anyone, and then they call you from a withheld number and ask you for your password etc. I have even had them become shirty with me because I refused to cooperate!
Sorry this went from a quick reply to a rant!

So, what did you do? That sort of behaviour just isn't fair, you know.....?
