View Full Version : Admin Password on Apple Powerbook G4 JamesBlacks 21-06-2009, 15:02 Hi, I need to remove the Admin Password on my Apple Powerbook G4. I do not have and cannot get any setup discs. Any ideas? Alky 21-06-2009, 16:39 Would it be too obvious to say go back to where you got it from? I mean that with the best intentions - otherwise we are into the realms of hacking? Good luck. VideoPro 21-06-2009, 17:26 Where did you get the 'Book? If you bought it secondhand the seller must provide the original set of discs with the computer. If you have simply lost your discs, contact Apple and explain the situation. They will send replacement discs for a nominal fee. Have your serial number ready -it's on the bottom of the computer. zongamin 22-06-2009, 06:05 You could take it to the apple store - they should be able to sort it out for you VideoPro 22-06-2009, 15:14 It would be useful to know why you want to change the password. If you think that it might have been compromised, go to System Preferences > Accounts and you can change the Password there -click the button next to your user icon and follow instructions on the screen. If you have forgotten your password, you need either the "Install Mac OS X" disc that came with the computer or a full retail copy of a Mac OS X version that will run on the computer. Depending on which model of PowerBook G4 it is -and there were several, you might be restricted to Mac OS X 10.4 which is no longer sold. Neither will you be able to use a version of Mac OS X that was released before the computer came out. If you contact Apple or visit their store, you will have to take the original sales receipt, an ID, such as your passport and wait for the information in Apple's registration database to confirm you as the owner. itosan 23-06-2009, 00:29 Hi, I need to remove the Admin Password on my Apple Powerbook G4. OSX 10.x.x JamesBlacks 25-06-2009, 17:05 Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 I bought it 2nd hand from a car boot and never got the setup discs. I also do not have the original sales receipts, so going to Apple store is not an option. Please help as I need to install some new software but I cannot. Thanks alchresearch 25-06-2009, 17:27 I also do not have the original sales receipts, so going to Apple store is not an option. I'm sure the Apple store would be able to help out though, either by using software to obtain the password, or selling you some new OS discs and doing a fresh install. itosan 25-06-2009, 23:06 Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 I bought it 2nd hand from a car boot and never got the setup discs. Restart the machine 2.... Hold apple + s key down after you hear the chime 3.... When you get a text prompt enter these terminal commands ........................... On the next boot up you should have a new admin account, on Leopard it will boot to what will appear to be the setup sequence when installing the OS. Works & Tested for me ;) MACS totally secure ;) :P zongamin 26-06-2009, 08:42 Works & Tested for me ;) MACS totally secure ;) :P No system is secure if you have physical access to the machine Valaina 05-07-2009, 12:04 Could somebody help me? I used this method to create a new account, which worked perfectly in just one try. But when i have to fill in my data (Apple ID, name, address, etc.) the keyboard is blocked! It just makes this annoying sound when i press any key. Without entering your data you obviously can’t continue registration. I own a Powerbook G4. The keys do work untill that introduction clip starts. Help would be very much appreciated, since my laptop is useless this way. HarryBustard 05-07-2009, 12:40 Entry of an Apple ID is optional with one being able to continue to the next page where one is required to enter one's personal details such as name et cetera before progressing further. Valaina 05-07-2009, 12:42 Yes, I know the Apple ID is optional, but the keys won't work further on in the process either, where you have to enter your name and such. HarryBustard 05-07-2009, 16:05 That's odd - as was the behaviour of an eMac this week in which I replaced the hard drive - that not accepting the first system disc. (It had a look at it and spat it out despite the disc being not just readable but also copyable on another Mac.) Surprisingy - and thankfully for the owner - I was able to install OS X Tiger from a generic copy. So, it just goes to show that some Macs don't need the original system discs. whelpton 05-07-2009, 17:17 Try logging in as the root account. Username: Root Password: Root This might work if the apple server is running. |
