Many (many) distros available;).

Try:

http://www.wampserver.com/en/index.php

or any of these:

http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Software_and_Servers/Installation_Kits/

Many now have an easy install procedure:thumbsup:.

Have fun.

I havent been having fun, that's why I asked for help. I've installed and uninstalled AMP and variations upon a theme as many times as you've had hot dinners during this current heatwave.

This wasnt helped by some bright spark who led me to believe he knew all about Dreamweaver MX 2004 but didnt and therefore nothing worked at all.

I've spent more hours on this than I can spare and really do need some help.

Went to the extent of taking library books out and going to various bookshops to buy these expensive books which didnt help.

Its been a right royal PITA  :help:

Thanks also for the suggested links; just had a quick look and feel totally swamped.

Ok, time for some more information. What exactly are you trying to do? Write php-based pages and host them on your own web server? (as opposed to uploading onto a commercial host) If so, do you already have a copy of linux set up and working? Does apache work at all, before you get as far as php and mysql?

If you are installing Dreamweaver on a Windows based pc, that should be straightforward enough - just put the cd in and follow the instructions! Although to be honest I'm not sure how much you need Dreamweaver if all your code will be in php? You could probably get by with a text editor... vi perhaps ;)

Why would Linux be a requirement? Apache, PHP, MySQL all have ports to Windows and have done so for a looooonnnnggg time;).

I think the problem with DW relates to when a site is first defined, it asks for information regarding hosts for testing server etc (which is not actually required for the design stage)?

They do indeed have win32 ports. I actually found them much more hassle to set up than the linux versions though! (let's face it, install most distros and it's all set up and working)

If I was setting up php here on a windows machine, I'd actually prefer to run a vmware linux machine than mess about with the hideousness that is win32 php/mysql - apache on its own is easy enough, but I have a vague memory of most windows docs being for v2.x which nobody I know would recommend using...

This kinda sounds like one of those situations I've had in the past where I figure if it's this hard to set up the environment, using it will be even worse! :)

Part of the problem is I was trying to do exactly that, ie set up AMP on WXP platform. Total nightmare.

I'd like to use Linux but cant afford risk of installing it without knowing what I'm doing; this computer is my communication aid - I'm speech impaired; medical advice to write instead of speak etc also a RRPITA

Want to use DMW for a Uni course and because although I can make sense of PHP, my coding is not so strong; my priority is to develop a website. I had hoped DMW would save loads of development and site maintenance time; bit of a joke.

After this bod made a mess of installing DMW I then had some advice that needs a server to work; coldfusion is expensive and not worth pursuing, better to install AMP and work from "local host" as a better option than uploading which is far too time consuming.

Agree that site definition isnt required for design stage but it is really good to check my design/php coding work to see if it works and is how I want things to be.

So essentially I am trying to use a combination of DMX & PHP to
develop a fairly simple site.

What's vmware?

Dont think its so much a case of it being this hard to set up the environment more to do with my lack of expertise - not a techie.

Also somehow or another just got apache and PHPGeek2utility to open but when tried to start it wouldnt. It was installed from a long time ago and at the time I was really far too busy to spend any more time on uninstalling and uninstalling it for the umpteenth time.

wendy. I use DW MX and a WAMP server for development, and have set up the WAMP server myself rather than rely on flaky WAMP install-in-one packages.

Have PMd you.

I usually just download phpdev from http://www.firepages.com.au/devindex.htm and have found it works straight off

yes I had heard there were problems with the install all in 1 packages which is also what the last one was, and the one before that and the one before that ....
