View Full Version : Favourite Sitcoms Past and Present?
Jillybabes 13-07-2005, 11:52 I myself am hooked on Everybody Loves Raymond, King of Queens, and Will and Grace. They are great light-hearted entertainment shows to watch when you are feeling a bit down. I also like Frasier, Friends and Cheers. I know they dont make anymore of these but I love to watch the repeats. Going back even further I used to watch Different Strokes (now that is showing my age). I also used to love watching british shows years ago like Butterflies, The Good Life, Home to Roost (most of these are repeated now) to name but a few. What shows do you remember......?
Spaulding 14-07-2005, 14:00 My favourite was It Ain't Alf 'Ot Mum.followed closely by Nearest and dearest with Hilda Baker. They were brilliant.Sorry, but I don't find American comedy funny
American past - Different strokes (as a child)
American present - Hope & faith..
British past - Terry & June..
British present - Bottom:hihi:
Kristian 14-07-2005, 23:42 I am a big fan of cheesy comedy. Favourites were / are:

The best thing in Cybill was Marianne, she was one mean woman.
i liked Will & Grace when it started, then it got wet.
Kristian 15-07-2005, 00:51 Marianne was fabulous! I just loved all the scheming against her ex!
Some very good ones so far but for me the best British sitcom ever is Blackadder. Pure class.
As for American sitcoms hmmmm, can't really think of any that stand out as exceptionally funny.

Radio 4 did a very good half-hour I Have a Cunning Plan: 20 Years On giving the background and history of writing and recording Blackadder.
If you go to this page and look for the title (under 'I') you will be able to listen to it:

the_rudeboy 15-07-2005, 12:42 Not a big fan of american humour but did like 'Friends'
'Only Fools and Horses' took some beating in its prime
.....but my alltime number one has to be.....
.............'Fawlty Towers'...........absolute quality!!
Jillybabes 15-07-2005, 12:57 I totally forgot to mention Fawlty Towers, now that was a complete classic. When I lived at home me, me dad and me brother used to go around quoting lines from fawlty, used to drive me mum daft cos she didnt know what we were on about. I also liked Only Fools and Horses, they dont make like they used to do they.;)

Does anyone remember 'Soap?' Bert, Benson et al! Loved that show. I only like the really old US sit-coms like Mr Ed, Bewitched, I Dream Of Genie. As for british sit-coms. Fawlty Towers, One Foot In The Grave, 'Til Death do us part too many to mention but League of Gentlemen was my favourite most recent one (not really a sit-com though!)
My favourite American sit com of all time has got to be Perfect Strangers.(Balki and Larry.) 80s - 90s. Does anyone remember this show as i recall it had me in fits of laughter.
My second favourite American comedy would have to be Taxi, then Golden Girls. oh and not to forget laurel and hardy- my favourite being Birth marks, amongst others.
I dont find any of the american ones shown today funny at all. But then thats just my opinion.
My favourite British comedies are Only fools and horses, Operation Good guys, Little Britain, Dads Army, League of Gentlemen, Dinner Ladies, Royale Family, one foot in the Grave esp one foot in the Algarve. that Peter Kaye Thing .Likely lads, and chance in a million.
Much older ones would be Beggar thy neighbour and Just Jimmy. oh and Get Some in, with Robert Lindsay and Tony Selby.
Does anyone remember Queenies castle with Diana Dors.
Pardon my Genie was a good comedy for kids.
US Mash, Cheers, I love lucy, the honeymooners, Mary tyler Moore.
UK Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, The Likely lads, Hancock. the Army Game.
American Sitcoms
King of Queens, Just Shoot me, Mash (not in that order)
British Sitcoms
Young ones, men behaving badly, red dwarf (not in that order either)

was Balki an Eastern European immigrant? If so yes, it was funny.

Apparently lots of signatures but still no dvd, the petitions been running nearly two years now.

Old Harry's Game is genius. If we're talking great radio comedy then I'd include The Masterson Inheritance, Giles Wemmbley-Hogg Goes Off and I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue in my list as well :)

Me too, it's fantastic. Are they really doing a sixth series? Can't wait.
Does anyone remember 'Nightingales'? There was just the one series, on Ch 4, can't remember the year, think it was early '90s - It had Robert Lindsay and two other guys in it, as security guards in an office building at night.
Also a similarly short-lived and odd (American) comedy about the police dept. in a quirky remote small town, called 'Bakersfield P.D.'?
Yodameister 05-09-2007, 20:18 Just got into The Thick of It.
And I'm addicted to the repeats of Goodnight Sweetheart on ITV3, there's really something about it but I'm not quite sure what.
