hi,

I'm currently a nervous wreck, spent the last half an hour outside on the street in my dressing gown as my cat (one of 3) has for the 3rd time this week brought a live bat into the house......

He's bringing them in through the cat flap in his mouth and then letting them go....this one tonight has flown straight into the living room, dive bombing me....i'm scared to death...i also feel sorry for the bats.

Are there any bats/conservation experts out there who cat tell me how my cat is catching them? is there anything i can do to prevent it? It's the 3rd one this week and i know they are a protected species and not good for the bats...

For anyone tempted to write that this comes with the territory of having a cat please don't....i've had them for years and this has never happened before...mice, leaves yes but i can't cope with live bats in my house....

thanks for any help in advance xxx

I am worried about the bats though.....

It is legal to handle a bat or any other protected animal without a licence for humane reasons (only) this includes rescuing them from cats and taking them to a vet or person who is experienced in dealing with injured bats. The bat must be released at the earliest possible opportunity in the area where it was found. It is illegal to keep a healthy bat in captivity without a licence

I wonder where the nest is? Is your cat an adept tree climber or could it be that they have nested somewhere low down and are actually at risk because of where they are?

I know you can't move a bat nest if it's in your house just wondered if someone would come out and help to relocate them (if this is at all possible) if they are in danger due to where they are?

I'm not really sure what you could do in order to prevent your cat getting them tbh... we've never had this problem with any of our cats either so don't really know what to suggest...

I had a similar problem some years ago but my cat actually killed it. You could try getting the cat in before it goes dark and then shut the flap behind it so it can't get back out, otherwise, as I know you didn't want to hear, this is the natural predator coming out in them, sorry!!

I did this last night and the little sods have forced their way through the locked catflap and broken the plastic off!

Good grief - that's one puddy tat that is determined to bring you pressies!!

I was going to suggest locking the cat flap, something we had to do because of a cat who was determined to bring home live/dead/half chewed water rats!

Instead of using a locking cat flap, it would be stronger if you made your own locking device. You need 2 pieces of wooden strips with a groove in them, for the sides of the cat flap, one piece of wooden strip to go along the bottom and you get a piece of MDF, ply or whatever, cut to size so you can slide it down the grooves. Hope you can follow that!

wow - never heard of this before, just read it, but sorry I dont have any proven advise for you apart from putting a collar with a loud bell on it, which someone else has already suggested.

He already has this but apparently bells are useless to bats...

rang several numbers this am who say there is little that can be done as he could be getting them from anywhere, there is no suggestion i have a roost, but if i did they would come out, but then they can't move it either!

Have you tried the Bat Conservation Trust? They might be able to give advice.

http://www.bats.org.uk/pages/help.html

I've no idea how your cat couple be catching them - that's one skilled cat!

When does she tend to bring them home? Bats are most active around dawn n dusk, so if she brings them home around that time she might be catching them while they're out feeding. But if she brings them at other times she could've found access to a roost. Also they tend to stay in their roosts while it's raining so if she brings them in then she's likely to have got them from a roost.

What do you do when she brings them into the house? If you end up having to handle them to get them out or make sure they're not injured, make sure you wear gloves because the Daubenton's bat can carry rabies - if you get bitten you'd have to have a load of injections.

Are there any open bodies of water near you? Ponds, lakes etc?

Could you not use the caught bat in a recipe ?

I'm sure 20 mins in the oven at 200 degrees would leave you with something to eat with jacket potatos and roast carrots
