View Full Version : Rotherham Town Centre
Location114 16-06-2009, 20:17 Right I can remember when i was a kid and a teenager i used to love going down town shopping but now its lost all the slight excitement of doing something different its seriously under populated shops are closing down minute by minute the new shops opening are just repeats of the shops that are already there ie there opening a new poundland whats the point when theres already one there??
Im just wondering if people reckon it will ever get back to its prime and it be a geniunely good shopping expierence rather than a chore and a fast dash to get on bus and out of there.?
Phil Anthrop 16-06-2009, 20:35 I gave up on Rotherham town centre two years ago, for the very same reason that many others have. Political correctness prevents me from stating the reason unfortunately, but it is the same reason why the bigger stores are moving out...let them keep it, I have money to spend, I shall spend it elsewhere! I love Barnsley town centre however, I spend lots of time and money there.
PinkyCharl 16-06-2009, 20:45 I haven't been to rotherham town centre shopping since primark opened in meadowhall.... it's a hole. charity shops, pound shops & dobbers. not my cup of tea.
MAMALOCHA! 16-06-2009, 20:46 even the tramps don't go into rotherham town centre.
we shop in Rotherham and Barnsley ,and would never go into sheffield city centre,.as the anti car council have stopped motorists driving in .
and Meadowhell is a no no

i agree ,its so easy to drive round and park in Barnsley town centre (sheffield council take note and learn from Barnsley)
CorkerSWFC 17-06-2009, 00:26 Sheffield City centre is even worse than Rotherhams town centre, Sheffield reminds you of a horror movie at the moment.
The problem with Rotherham Town Centre is there is nothing to do that you would actually want to go and see.
The town centre itself is actually a good town centre, its the activities that are lacking,-cinema and a decent art gallery that shows something other than school kids work is whats needed.
The shopping won't take off unless theres something else to establish a footfall first.
gaz_drfc 18-06-2009, 11:45 There is shocking lack of shops in rotherham town centre there isnt even a cinema. The fact its so close to sheffield barnsley and donny is no excuse. I went round rotherham on a night out once (god knows why) most of the pubs were pretty much empty and this was on a saturday night.
Rotherham town centre has been pretty much "Hammered" by Meadowhell and Parkgate retail world but fair do's to the town planners there are plans put in to modernise the riverside area in Rotherham but is it too little too late ?
I really like shopping in Chesterfield especially on market days, theres plenty of nearby parking and it never seems too busy or rushed..

What is the reason that cannot be spoken? How many others? How do you know they stopped for the same reasons? Ditto the big stores.
Another vote for Barnsley center, Rotherham is a **** hole, sheffield(where i'm from) is full of chav scum, but Barnsley has great FREE parking and a good selection of shops/market.

Totally agree with you.

:hihi::hihi::thumbsup:
LibertyBell 18-09-2009, 06:16 They just can't get it right. the council spend money in developing All Saints Sq complete with trickling water feature, and made it a very pleasant place to sit. Then within a few months they erected a giant TV screen overlooking it. What a waste of time that was. Blaring out TV shows all day long. I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone looking at it.
There are barely any shops left where you can spend money and so the pople who have money to spend go elsewhere; Sheffield or more likely Parkgate/Meadowhall.
This leaves the centre for people with no money to spend. The poorer people, including come very unpleasant looking white youths with large dogs and golf clubs (and they're not going for a quick round either). Nasty, very nasty.
I really don't see any end to this and I fear there will be only charity shops and mobile phone shops left soon.
zongamin 18-09-2009, 06:24 Rotherham Town Centre = Greggs, Poundland, Greggs, Poundland, Greggs, Poundland.....
I live in a pit village, when the mine closed down it seemed like the shopping centre had just died, It is the same in Rotherham they closed all the steel works and the shopping centre died too.
missymoo73 18-09-2009, 11:07 I live in Rotherham and have done all my life (36) and I hate the Town Centre its got so run down now I afford it like the plague. I can't ever see it going back to how it used to be (many moons ago) whilst Meadowhall is there.
Used to love going shopping and drinking ther - went drinking the other week round town and it was poor to say the least - full of young ones p*ssing about getting lashed and not being able to handle it and throwing up all over - OMG I just realized I sound like a right old git noooooooooooooooo :help: :hihi:

There is no poundland that I know of.
Pound world? Now you're talking - but there's only one.
sheffield_uk 18-09-2009, 12:15 we only use Barnsley for shopping....cant be bothered messing about trying to go into sheffield shopping...we are closer to Barnsley too...

LibertyBell 19-09-2009, 05:38 full of tramps its shocking
No Craig, those are the council workers...:hihi:
upinwath 19-09-2009, 08:31 Meadowhall and, to a level, Parkgate finished Rotherham but the final nail was RMBC's improvements.
