View Full Version : Advice needed: My puppy is not well!!!
loopylulu 16-06-2009, 18:49 Im going to take her to the vets tomorrow but just wondered if anybody could give me a bit of advice.
She has what seems to be a cold (runny nose) and also is sleeping all the time - she doesnt seem to be bounding about like you would expect from a puppy of 12 weeks (thats how old the pound said they thought she was).
Should I be worried? Any ideas on what it could be?

Is she coughing?
loopylulu 16-06-2009, 19:00 Is she coughing?
No, theres no cough - the odd sneeze but no coughing.

Aww poor little thing, perhaps it is just a cold after the change from kennels to a home inside, is it a clear discharge from her nose?
I think that your doing the best thing taking her to the vets, it might be best if you tell them of her symptoms just in case it is infectious and they may not want her to sit in the waiting room.
Please let us know how you get along, will be thinking of her tomorrow :)

Yes, it is clear discharge from her nose.
Im just worried because we dont know if she has had her vaccinations. We do have other dogs and they seem ok.
I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again
Moonbird 16-06-2009, 19:14 She will probably have had temporary vaccinations at the pound, but will need a full set now.
If its clear then that sounds hopeful, could be kennel cough starting up, I'm sure that the vet will soon put her right :)
metaphoria 16-06-2009, 19:14 Thanks.

Why do you not know if she's had her vaccinations? Is she a 'rescue' dog?

Yes, she was from the animal shelter on spring street - we dont even know how old she is - they said she could possibly be 12 weeks old but im not so sure with all the sleeping she is doing.
teenhappy 16-06-2009, 19:34 my dog used to have those, i used to give them some medicine for babies, like cold relief in drops, are very good.

Found thishttp://www.vetfone.co.uk/need-advice-now/ if you get really concerned, but she should be ok if you are going to the vets tomorrow.
Found this (http://www.any-uk-vet.co.uk/park-abbeydale-rd-south/hours.htm) as well.
Hope she's ok.

Thanks for the above - we are eligible for the PDSA though - so if she gets worse in the night I will give them a ring otherwise I will ring in morning.
Thanks everybody and I will keep you up to date with things.
loopylulu 17-06-2009, 13:00 Just got back from the vets.
Have got to take her back on Friday - the vet said that the runny nose would be the start of something.
She had an injection while she was there, and has some bisolvon powder to put in her food and water. Her temperature is ok and the vet said she is underweight - he said due having been found on the streets and being in the pound.
Will have to wait and see if anything else develops.
JarvisCocker 18-06-2009, 10:46 Fingers crossed she's OK
My fingers are crossed for her, too, hope she improves quickly.
loopylulu 18-06-2009, 11:46 Well, today she seems like a different dog - she is so lively its unbelieveable - she seems to have made a rapid recovery.
Shes still got the runny nose and sneezes but she isnt sleeping as much and is behaving like you would expect for a puppy her age.

Sue I'm positive that there is something that you can buy to keep wiping your dog with that helps allergies, I can't remember what it is called but I think that I have seen Medusa mention it before, maybe you could ask her about it, your certainly not in a good position, I hope that things stay ok for you all.

Great news - you'll probably be heading for an afternoon nap, soon, to recover from her enthusiasm!
