View Full Version : Sheffield - Strange Nacreous Clouds - February 1996
Alastair 16-06-2009, 14:15 Does anyone remember the strange nacreous cloud formations seen over Sheffield in February 1996? They were the very high level ones with all sorts of mother of pearl pastel colours in them.
I remember that photos were sold at the time in local photography shops and I think also by The Star, but I can't find a photo online anywhere except for this rather poor one -

Does anyone have a better photo?
no i wish i had but great pictures, keep it up mate.
I remember them quite well Alastair although I'm afraid I don't have any photos. I understood at the time that the beautiful colours and mother of pearl effect were due to particles of ice in the clouds refracting sunlight.

hillsbro 17-06-2009, 05:39 Hi Alastair - at home I have some photos that I took from Wadsley, showing the nacreous clouds in the west over Bradfield. I'm on holiday in Devon at present but when I'm home at the weekend I'll see if I can find them and upload them to Photobucket. I also have a postcard that was published locally at the time; I think by Hedgerow Publishing. Here is an image from the Hedgerow online library: http://www.hedgerow.co.uk/image.php?type=general&searchstring=clouds&imgid=17124
I remember seeing the colours in the sky as I came home from work on a 14 bus - nobody on the bus knew the explanation and we couldn't understand how a "rainbow" could be in that location! Some pictures were shown on BBC's "Look North" program and a weather expert explained what nacreous clouds are, and how rarely they are seen.
I'm sure I've seen some postcards of this recently for sale. Could have been in either WH Smiths, the card shop on Fargate or GT News on The Moor.

Phanerothyme 18-06-2009, 17:17 I took one from Hull where it was clearly visible in the western sky, but no prints. Gonna try and find my negs of it, stunning stuff.

Nice photos, hillsbro - well done! I remember seeing the clouds but by the time I got home and found my camera they had faded away.
maidinsheff 20-06-2009, 17:01 Hi
Yes I do remember the nacreous clouds. I was travelling home on the bus to Worksop when they started to appear. It was beautiful and a bit scary. Everyone, including the bus driver was craning their necks to look up at them. I do have a photograph somewhere - I bought it from an Art shop which used to be at the bottom of Cambridge Street. It didn't do the clouds justice but I bought it because it was a piece of history that I could share with my kids who didn't get to see the clouds.

hillsbro 21-06-2009, 19:20 I've found the postcard that I mentioned in post #6. It's the same as the Hedgerow online image without the Hedgerow name: http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/Nacreous4.jpg

Bought one on Saturday from Sheffield Scene on Surrey St.

Wow - that's more like I remember. The picture I bought was just a copy of a photograph that someone had taken from their back garden and there were huge lleylandii in the way. I also seem to remember a strange sky a little while after the nacreous event - with huge black clouds forming in long ridges and furrows but it may just be my imagination.
Manxdeedah 23-06-2009, 19:43 Just remembered i'd got these, taken in Ranmoor that evening.
