View Full Version : Tap Water Quality
Are Yorkshire Water getting our water from somewhere else now? I've just had to descale the kettle (not limescale but a brown residue) and this is a first for me.
Sorry to any macho types who may find this post a bit too 'domestic' ;)
Moon Maiden 28-11-2003, 12:48 Probably buying it in from France!!!
At least I am able to drink water from the tap in Sheffield - just. The water in parts of Barnsley tastes too much of chlorine *urgh*

SaxonLeigh 28-11-2003, 13:01 its funny you should mention that! the water in my home town (high green) tastes lovely. yet i work in Attercliffe (dont start getting idea's i'm a receptionist for a fabrication company not a lap dancer) and the water taste's vial, i have to descail the ketal every week and i dont even bother having hot drinks myself because it just tastes sickning! i thought all yorkshire water came from the same place? could it be something to do with the pipes?
Carlwarker 28-11-2003, 13:23 I tend not to drink tap water - wherever I am living - unless it's boiled, (tea, coffee etc). Otherwise, I drink some form of bottled water.

Ever since I came to Sheffield 2 and a bit years ago there has been a gratual build-up of some sort of brown residue on the taps in my bathroom. I'm not concerned about it because the water tastes great. I'm assuming it's peat or silt or something similar. Also the plug holes turn a bit pink on the outer rim, has anyone else encountered this? Could this be due to iron in the water?
Greybeard 30-11-2003, 09:47 Here's a headline from the Independent 03 October 2003....
"Bacteria in bottled mineral water blamed for 6,000 cases of food poisoning a year" but you have to pay to read th article.

On the poisons in tap water....

The words burnt and scalded come to mind
The quality of water in Sheffield depends very much on where you live and what pipe renewal schemes are going on. here in Bradfield the water comes straight out of Agden reservoir via a holding tank up on Kirk Edge. Probably good enough to make whisky with :D

(edited for spelling)
It could be - there's a lot of lead piping in the older buildings.
And then you've got all the waste dumped into the River Don
Forumosaurus 28-12-2010, 13:06 I live in S14 and I can drink it from the tap, I've tried water from other areas and often it's undrinkable.
I work in the Brightside Area and our water tastes fine.
Congratulations on digging up this old thread.
My water is horrid, it comes out of the cold tap really really cloudy and takes ages to settle.... stinks of bleach too :gag:
ChrisT70 28-12-2010, 18:37 there was ahtread a while ago about this. when local resevoirs are low Yorkshire water move water in bulk by pumping down from Elvington/york area to sheffield, so the hardness does change. no warning or notice is needed or given, and as soon as they can they move us back to local supplies.
Darth Vader 28-12-2010, 18:53 I've noticed the last week that tap water is not as clear as usual, takes longer to run clear, and even had a horrible 'smell' to it the other week.

I've noticed this for years. When I rang up the woman began telling me how to clean the wash bowl!!!
Said it was O.K.
Granma.
Gherkin75 29-12-2010, 08:56 I'm in S6, seems fine to me.

It's probably caused by all the fish peeing in it.
Gingerchick 29-12-2010, 16:01 I live in S9 and mine's the same so I bought a Waterfilter Kettle. So much better.
