Yeah I tried all the obvious stuff and under no circumstance's can I open any pics downloaded off the net. I want to open them in photoshop so I go do some work I have for a project.

Any help would be great this is really annoying because it should be such a simple thing to do.

What file format are they?

Formats I have tried thus far:

Photoshop 6
Photoshop CS (Trial Version)
Acrobat
Kodak Pics (from my digital camera)
Paint
Windows

All no good, all saved as originally bitmap images. :-(

So if you right-click on the red and black SheffieldForum.co.uk image logo at the top left and select "Save Picture As", then navigate to your desktop and accept the filename of logo.gif, then minimise all your programs and double-click on the logo file on the desktop, it doesn't load up in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer (or whatever is the default app in your setup)? What about if you open Photoshop and use the File/Open command? What actually happens?

Sorry, my question was not totally clear, so just need to confirm:

You say that the file format is bitmap.
Do the downloaded file names end in ****.bmp?

What is the typical size of a downloaded file?

What is the typical size of a downloaded file? There isn't one, image file sizes depend on the size of the image (width*height), the format used (aka compression).

A BMP, JPEG, JPG & GIF can be opened with Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop & Paint(brush), so nothing out of maintstream !

I'm sorry Mr Scarlet but you seem a little confused.

I am asking the original poster, trentboy2, these questions to try and get a better feeling of what the problem is.

trentboy2 has said that he has downloaded and saved bitmaps. OK?

A basic check, to see why they cannot be opened using the software that he listed, is for him/her to confirm the file name and suffix. He may think it is a bitmap but it might not be!

Secondly, by giving us an average size of the files that he/she has downloaded can quickly indicate whether he has actually downloaded a picture or just a "link" which is a serious possibility.
It will also help to give an indication of what size of picture was expected. 6 x 4 at 72 dpi or whatever.

My expectations are that either the downloaded files are not actually bitmaps (may be compressed or some other format) or that the downloads have corrupted and are unable to be viewed.
Corruption in a large number of files would seem unlikely unless the downloads were all at the same time from the same source.

Without more information from trentboy2 further specific advice is not possible/practicable.

Thanks for all the threads guys. I tried to just copy the images I want then paste them into photoshop which works just fine. For the record I kept getting told that the 'image.gif'could not be opened.

PS Now have I copy of Rich951's portrait on my computer!! :-)
