View Full Version : Index, Dixons and the Stonehouse to close
Lots of changes in sight for Orchard Square, the owners of Orchard Square have said they're to create a new flagship store in Sheffield out of the current Index catalogue shop and Dixons units. It'll be three floors and has the frontage on Fargate. Rents are projected in excess of £800,000 per annum (!)
The Stonehouse pub (grade II listed) has also been aquired and may be converted into more retail units to expand Orchard Square.
WTF?! They're closing Dixons?!

Chill Winston!
There's a massive Curry's opposite McD's @ top of the moor now.
Same company you know :P
Carl_Malibu 12-07-2005, 10:58 dixons = overpriced, and the people that work there are generally arrogant and ignorant.
not a good combination
ToryCynic 12-07-2005, 11:01 Virtually everyone that works in any of the DSG stores aren't particularly knowledgeable.
Carl_Malibu 12-07-2005, 11:03 we used to go bull**** baiting when we got bored when i was a little younger.
stand around looking at things, let the "sales advisors" come up and see how much boll*cks you could get them to spew, egging them on etc.
then tell them exactly what they said wrong
oh we weren't friendly people back then
Hope we get a decent clothes shop when its built.

I can't see they are shutting the Stone House, I thought the reason it was listed was because it has the longest bar in Europe. So surely if they rip that out it would be against the rules of the listing???

Perhaps they'll just convert the end nearest to Orchard Square, but they've aquired the whole building with vacant possession, which is 13,000 sq ft over two floors plus lots of cellar space.
Tom.
been in Dixons today. Nice to see the product knowledge and knowledge is still as poor as ever:loopy:
clairerob 13-07-2005, 17:39 Yes. We went in dixons with my 2 year old son and my partner. We went to Wendy at the memory card counter who then told us to go straight to another one ( fob off 1 ) then we went to another counter and they told us to go back to Wendy ( fob off 2) who stood around moaning and pulling faces and then when she couldn't find our details on the system just because my partner said is it possible you could try under our post code instead of name it may come up with everything then ( As we have done this before ) she shouted at him back saying " well you have an attitude dont you ". I couldnt believe it. So my partner said " well actually no, but as soon as we came in here we could see that you got up on the wrong side of the bed this morning " she then turned round to me and had the cheek to say " well I hope he is impressing you love" I said pardon. she said " well he seems to be showing off alot doesnt he, does this impress you or are you embarassed" I couldnt believe it. I said "we have a kid and have been together for years and years he doesnt need to do that LOVE" I was so disgusted how she could speak like that to me and my partner . I will never shop there again!
I'd complain to management if I were you. That's no customer service at all.
clairerob 13-07-2005, 20:04 I know. I was going to write in but I keep putting it off. I was just so suprised how somebody like that can get away with talking to customers like that. The icing on the top of the cake was when the person who told us to go back to her even said " if you dont have any lcuk with her then come back to me coz she can be very mardy! "
thing is clairerob, you would need to proove it...

I agree, but you know what Sheffield's like, a listed building means nothing if someone wants to build something new. It would be a real shame if the Stonehouse went, its one of the last remaining pubs thats in Sheffield that i used to go to as a young-en.
clairerob 14-07-2005, 16:48 Yeh I know and thats a bit hard. It might show it on there camera's but doubt they would go to so much trouble. Just be warned. Do not go to WENDY in Dixons!!!

How ironic that they will build something on a listed building like the Stonehouse but won't touch the lovely hyde park flats.
Glad to hear that Dixons is going. I stopped buying from them when I discovered in 1997/8 they arent prepared to refund customers on computer systems bought on finance even if there are serious technical problems and intense dissatisfaction with customer service - there were serious problems with their call centre back then. .
Quite how they manage to survive with deplorably ignorant staff who generally seem to lounge doing nothing is unrelated. If I go in there these days it's at the starting point of research in to the suitability of a product for my needs.
*Twinkle* 15-07-2005, 06:50 If you were at the counter, they'd have CCTV pointing at it, incase you reached over and took anything. So there will be CCTV footage of what happened and get the guy's name too, and include him in the letter, mentioning that he acknowledged she was being "mardy"....

Don't waste your time. I used to work for DSG at their contact centre (on the Parkway, the big white building on the left after the Wicker turnoff as you head out of town). They won't do anything regarding your complaint I can assure you.
Just don't go back.

Uh, yes they will. For a start as you may see it is not DSG running it anymore, so things have changed...
clairerob 15-07-2005, 22:28 Dan where did you use to work in the call centre . I have a friend called louise who worked in the warranty bit. Do you know her? I bet there's lots of louise's actually. haha.
CSI_BHA Who are they now? And why does it make a difference? Do you work for them now?
dan_999uk 16-07-2005, 10:08 It's now run by Capita, a third party, who said they could do it cheaper than DSG could run it themselves.
The only way this is possible is by cutting corners - my friends who still work there tell me they are being pushed to deal more in quantity than quality. They use the bare minimum of agents, causing long queues on the telephone lines.
You will just get a form letter created from a series of templates, no action will be taken against the member of staff - especially if they are good at selling extended warranties. Store managers are only interested in sales figures, not good service. Once they have your money, they aren't bothered.
Trust me on this, I worked there for nearly 4 years, in two different departments, responding to telephone and written complaints and enquiries. I left as a CSA 3B - highest level you could get as an agent.
Oh, if you're interested, those places to avoid:
Dixons
Currys
PC World
The Link
Partmaster
All owned by DSG.
I did know a couple of ladies named Louise, but not in the Coverplan warranties bit - not that I could put a face to, sorry.
As an update, according to this press release (http://www.laprops.co.uk/ROOT/PORTFOLIO/34564/page34564.asp) Clarks shoes will be replacing the former units. I'm not sure they mean the Dixons side though, as I can't imagine there's enough Clarks in existance to fill 3 floors!
Clarks... bah
how many shoe shops do we need in one small area *grumble grumble grumble*

Me too. Worst job I've had. Even worse than that egg factory job one summer...
I found that just about every other customer rang up wanting something that either I didn't have the knowledge (crap training) or means (crap systems, prone to failure) to help. We were then expected to tell them to phone a £1 a minute line. Hmm.
I was paid £5.50 an hour, through an agency. I think that says enough about the standard of service you're likely to get. Needless to say, staff turnover is high so what knowledge is accumulated soon disperses.
ToryCynic 05-10-2005, 00:22 DSG staff would be the sort of people that think GPS (Global Positioning System) and GPRS (internet/email on a PDA) is the same thing.
They never fail to amaze me - I was amazed that a PC World worker actually knew what the Basic Input Output Subroutine was, and he know what the Power On Self Test is - I was amazed!
DSG used to have something going with ****eServe ISP, did they not?
Nick - knowing SCC's weird ways they'll send you to Leeds or Manchester (whichever one it is that has one) for Harvey Nich's....
:)
bassplayer 05-10-2005, 07:23 I went to the US afew years ago and was just intime to benefit from a TAX FREE fortnight.
Yes you read it TAX FREE 2 week spending spree. This was only on essentials such as food and clothing but many other stores participated also including electrical stores, hardware and so forth.
It'd be a sunset beach on Pluto before Dixons would do anything like that;....waaaaaay too expensive and not enough expertise on the shop floor.

To be fair to the employees, the call centre worker job specification mentions nothing about technical knowledge of computers. I think DSG expect callers to know exactly what they need. I used to get asked for things I'd never heard of.
Yep, ****eServe was a DSG venture. Merged with Wanadoo now I think after DSG got rid.
Clarks won't be moving to the empty units.. The press release was related to when we opened in Orchard Square 2 years ago.
The rumblings on the Orchard Square grapevine are that it will be an Arcadia group shop that will move to the Index/Dixons end of Orchard Sq...possibly Zara or a relocation of Topshop.
Don't quote me on that though!
Lynsey.

Um, there is a 99p discount store on Snig Hill, at the bottom near the Chav shop, sorry I mean Argos :D
I went in once the other week while I was waiting for a bus back to Stannington after a couple of hours window shopping (not buying windows) one Friday morning.
99p Shops.... Staffed by the window lickers who failed their Argos exams :loopy:
it's a darn pitty over the Stone House!, we've got plenty of the other shops.

If it is to be Harvey Nicks, I hope it's better than the one in Leeds.
Can anyone honestly imagine Harvey Nicks opening in Sheff city centre??? :suspect: Maybe in a few years, but the city centre is just not popular enough to warrant them opening here.
JPMiddleton 07-10-2005, 19:40 Its H & M.......................
