As many of you know I'm probably one of the Forum's Americanophiles, if such a word exists. I like the US, it's people, and whilst I occasionally have issues with some of it's foreign policy, they're OK.

And then you get this.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4673987.stm

After 9/11 we are asked to flock to NY to show the terrorists we're not cowed. After 7/7 US troops 30 miles up the road are advised to steer clear.

For crying out loud, guys, give us a break. If teh terrorists had wanted to hit US assets in the UK they'd have gone for the Embassy or pubs and clubs frequented by US forces personnel.

Whoever issued this order should be sent to a posting where such orders would be useful - you know, Baghdad, Kabul...places like that.

I am SO disappointed in whichever beaurocrat issued this instruction. I hope he's thorughly ashamed of himself.

Joe

If the Yanks have been told to 'avoid' London, then I suppose we can expect Tomahawk strikes and 'collateral' damage any day now.:(

Bit puzzled Joe. This American army base has lifted this temporary ban on visits to London. You should be pleased.

Yep, as reported in today's Guardian:

Ban lifted on US troops entering London (http://www.guardian.co.uk/attackonlondon/story/0,16132,1526894,00.html)

The ban on US air force personnel entering London following last week's terror attacks has been lifted, the US embassy said today.

The move followed criticism from police, politicians and tourism officials in the capital.

Around 10,000 US servicemen and women based at two RAF stations in Suffolk were given the order not to go inside the M25 after the bombs killed 52 people and brought London to a standstill on Thursday. It "strongly advised" their families and civilian staff to keep out of the capital.

The move had been greeted with dismay by British officials and US expats, with Thomas Conlon, the UK director of American Citizens Abroad, saying it "beggared belief".

"These same people who are being restricted from London are being flown into Baghdad," he said. "If they're going into Baghdad, I can't imagine why they aren't allowed to go into London."

<snip>

The Conservative MP Andrew Robathan condemned the ban, saying: "I would have hoped our American allies could show a little more courage.

"It ... sends out the message, contrary to everything we have been saying and George Bush has been saying, that the terrorists have in fact won to a certain extent because we are not going to London because of them."

I'm delighted!

But given that I posted at 8-00am this morning when the ban was still in place, and I lack the gift of predicting the future, I'm only just catching up on the news.

I'd take it as a compliment, Joe - some forum members obviously think you're all-knowing/all-seeing!

The Americans are the last people I'd want in a crisis situation - they're so trigger happy we lose too many of our men in 'friendly fire'.

I still can't understand why more wasn't made of our losing so many man in the Iraq war to American 'friendly fire'

I quite like the idea of the officer who issued the orders being given the job of cleaning the latrines with a toothbrush for the next couple of years. :)

Karenjane - unless they're planning on bombing London with tankbusting aircraft - unusual even for the US - I doubt that their propensity for friendly fire is an issue for US servicemen visiting London to get drunk! :)

If you don't like Americans, that's fine. But look at what you wrote. Now, substitute Muslims, Asians, Blacks, Pakistani, Gay, or Disabled people for Yanks.

That's all I'm saying.

I mean no disrespect to you, dave. And none to you either, robbie. But I believe it's unfair to label entire groups of people. A population from the same country may share similar views because of proximity and a shared heritage, but you cannot say they are all the same. Particularly in a country as large and diverse as the US. We are all individuals after all.
