View Full Version : What's the first thing you grab?
DragonofAna 12-07-2005, 00:42 You wake up and find the smoke alarm screeching and the house on fire. Excluding the kids who have already somehow been removed to safety, and assuming if you have a partner they are capable of taking care of themselves - what is the one thing you grab to take to safety with you?
Just wondering.

redrobbo 12-07-2005, 00:44 Some clothes.......trousers instantly come to mind! Don't wish to stand shivering in the nude whilst waiting for the fire engine to arrive! :hihi:
My cake-stand.
(It's by Alessi).
DragonofAna 12-07-2005, 00:50 I forgot to puty my own choice - silly forgetful me. I would grab the piccy of the wife and kids - partly through sentimental reasons, and partly because the insurance certificate is in the back of the frame ;)
Dragon
That would be a difficult choice. Which one should I choose?
1. Wallet?
2. Keys?
3. Autographed nude picture of Margaret Thatcher?
The cat....... would'nt be hard shes usually layed across my chest or head at night anyway, like a furry hot waterbottle, not fun in the hot weather..
LoopyLou 12-07-2005, 06:16 Presuming that I can substitute my dogs for kids in your opening example. (not because i'd let the kids burn, but because I don't have any)
After the dog it would be a box of CDs that hold all our family and holiday digital photos. all those happy memories plus some photos of people no longer with us....... just couldn't leave them behind.
Loops.
bensonhedges 12-07-2005, 06:23 as many photos as i can (can't replace those), and my insurance documents.
this actually happened to a friend of mine in the early 70,s,he got the wife and kids out then braved the flames to rescue his most treasured possesion............................his fishing tackle, talk about a fishing fanatic, he put it at the end of the street with the wife and kids watching over it while he ran to the phone to ring the fire brigade
I'd also try to grab photo albums and videos of family especially because most of them are now dead.
My bloke would try to get his computer whilst kicking his dog out of the door with his foot.
When our house was on fire, the first thing I grabbed was the 'phone to call the fire brigade!.. secondly was my dad and lastly the kittens.. that's it. It sounds really stupid when everyone is out of the house and ok.. but I did look at the house and think, my entire life is in there. Its terrible not knowing how much of it is going to be left afterwards!
I must just add that our house did have 3 smoke alarms at that time.. none of them went off, until the door to the room where the fire had started was opened, even though there was smoke pouring out around the door frame!! one of them was outside that room, I found it amazing because the one in the hall would go off if you burnt the toast.
Swan_Vesta 12-07-2005, 07:58 We had a dry run of this about 4 months ago when our smoke detector went for a burton and decided to go off for no particular reason.
Picture the scene at about 2.45am all hell breaks loose when the ruddy thing starts screeching like a demented banshee, me leaping out of bed completely starkers and the missus about five steps behind me both looking for fire/smoke/anything. It scares the living bejeusus you when it happens, my heart rate was up there with bomb disposal technicians and there was no chance of getting back to sleep that night.
The smoke alarm is fixed and is tested regularly, however, the lesson is well learnt. But to answer the original question
1 Wallet
2 Strong box
3 Keys
4 Clothes
My Japanese action figures and my TV, thought that might not be practical, so I'd settle for a dozen pairs of trainers, and the Claris Cliff vase thingy.
i would grab my my daughter, everything else is not worth risking your life for! i would hope the animals would have sense to escape with me but if they were trapped i would probably try rescue them as they are my babies too :D
Assuming that my family would get out safely:
My guitar
Wallet
If possible: Family photos, but they're downstairs so I would think that it would be difficult for me to get to them.
My fire extiguisher :P

you beat me too it, although to be fair it's in my car.
Laptop, car keys, phone and wallet (all conviently ready for work so near the door). Oh and my packed lunch, may as well eat a sandwich as I sit in my car waiting for the firebrigade.

Make sure there is a potato in your snap box, then you can make a baked potato while you wait, and have a hot meal before you spend the night in the car.
beautynbeast 12-07-2005, 09:47 have to be my dog, the beast . could well be a problem there though seen as he weighs 13 stone. and could snore his way through a earth quake. would he move? would he hell. so i could be wrong and grab a chicken first so the beast would follow :heyhey:
Dressing gown and rabbit.
Or possibly might try to wrap rabbit in dressing gown if she was getting panicky and scrabbly!
My handbag in which I keep all my necessities for life
hazel
Hope I never have to, but it'd be the Old PC with all my photos on it.
with my phone and wallet in my trouser pockets!
Greybeard 12-07-2005, 13:36 Noticed a lot of people are concerned about their photos in the event of a fire.
There is a web site offering free storage of 10GB of data, but the snag is you can only retrieve 100MB/month uness you pay to download the lot in one go. Anyway it might be useful for some - not just for photos of course, but all the other important stuff on your PC.

My priorities would likely be -
Wallet
Car keys
Mobile phone
Wife
Dog
although I'm not certain about the order of the last two :D
I'd probably grab a sandwich. Better to die of smoke inhalation than hunger!
My tin, baccy and rizla the wife and dog and cats last thing mi car keys need sumwhere to sit .
And moblie to call the insurance:gag:

katy1981 08-08-2005, 03:41 photo albums, memories are precious and should be saved
BrainThrust 08-08-2005, 03:49 Clothes for me. No way am I waiting for the fire brigade naked.
If I had time I might pop back in for my camera, a burning house will be useful for my new library of stock footage.
