I don't have the problem now because i've had to re-install the entire operating system. This is more of a question to anyone else.
I updated a laptop a few days ago via automatic update. Installed the 22 critical updates and re-booted.
Laptop was dead :? It didn't even try to load XP. It just sat there doing nothing. I tried absolutely everything i know of to get the bloody thing to boot.
Eventually i decided on a fresh install (it had only been installed a week previously)
Went straight back to M$ and updated again, no problems :?

I then found out that someone else downloaded a Trojan last week while updating their system.

Has anyone else had any problems while updating?

seems to be hit and miss whether the updats screw up the puter

i did mine a while back, and had problems booting, reinstalled over itself i think later on and it was fine.

updated a neighbours puter with 25 critical updates and it seemed to boot up fine.......they aint been back to complain anyway and it was over a week ago :)

I've heard lots of rumblings about people having problems with updates, but not a single person I know has *ever* had an issue. I held off on XP service packs after stories were flying around, but again no problems. Actually I think I know one person who had problems, but that was a specific issue with Dell machines and SP2 which was fixed with a Dell-provided patch.

vidster, you say you know someone get a trojan while updating? Did you get any more details? I'd be amazed if it wasn't them doing something silly while the update downloaded (or had had it a while without knowing) - if microsoft were distributing something like that it would be all over the M$-hating world! :)

The only problems with SP2 i had were solved by just turning the firewall off.

Personally I can safely say that I haven't had any problems with Windows Updates and my business customers pc's are set to auto update regardless, and as yet I have not had to revive a dead computer so far.

However, a number of clients who have had a brand name PC have had numerous problems especially those based on the early P4 processors as there was a bug that wasn't made particulalry public that meant when SP2 was installed, the PC would not reboot at all and a full reinstall was neccessary.

On a different point there have been some spurious emails that state there are updates ready for your pc. The body of the email looks very similar to the new Windows update V6 and people are being fooled into basically install viruses.

I've had problems in the past where I'd chosen to accept the MS certified drivers via winupdate.
The MS provided SBLive5.1 drivers, when installed alongside the Creative reference drivers caused me to blue screen on boot-up.

I now only ever update drivers manually.
It gives me a nice warm feeling.

We had a recent XP patch which damaged the print spooler service on a particular model of laptop.

A few weeks later a 'revised' patch was released and the problem went.

Could possibly be linked to my problem. The laptop in question has a 3 year old P4. I had installed sp2 and rebooted fine, went straight back to M$ and installed the other updates. Thats when it happened. No boot, no beep, no nothing.
However....When i re-installed and updated again, everything went fine :?

Did you have a firewall enabled before you started downloading Windows updates?

I had a laptop with clean Windows XP SP0 and no firewall enabled, which I connected to the Internet to download drivers for the video and audio card.

I spent the next hour removing spyware :shakes:
