View Full Version : dvd rippers
marcgoddard 11-06-2009, 07:19 i want to download a dvd ripper as i have just transferred all the old vhs footage of our kids onto dvd and would like to make a few copies for the family, anyone got any links to one please? i have tried googling but tbh its all just gobbledegook to me lol.
alchresearch 11-06-2009, 07:20 If you made the discs then Nero or DVD Decrypter will do the job for you.
If they are just home movies and not protected commercial DVDs, then they dont need to be "ripped", they just need to be copied.
Imgburn will do this for you (and it's free).
You just need to create a DVD image by selecting "create image file from disc", then you can run off as many copies as you like, by using "write image file to disc"

If they're not copy protected Nero etc will do a direct copy, no need to rip and image and reburn it.

If you have 1 reader and 1 writer, yes.
If not, then Nero will do just the same as Imgburn.

Also, DVD Rippers are illegal in several countries as they circumvent copy protection. As genuine as your intentions are, we don't allow discussions of dodgy software on the forum, or links to where you can find such software.
But, happily, Nero will do the job for you, so everyone's a winner.
Imgburn does not "rip" anything, nor does it circumvent any sort of copy protection.
It just creates or burns unprotected DVD/CD images.

Lol behave yourself, since when was imgburn illegal to use or talk about?
alchresearch 11-06-2009, 12:33 DVD Decrypter is free and has a very quick and easy "Disc to ISO" feature, which will copy the DVD to your hard drive, then "ISO to Disc" which will copy the image file back to a blank CD.
This feature only works with your own discs, not commercial movies, so won't copy a commercial DVD.
Just in case the OP doesn't have Nero.
IMHO, I think the latest Nero is bloatware at its worst, I wouldn't have it anywhere near my PC.

Since when? You are allowed to make copies of anything you own yourself regardless of copy protection.
It is illegal to then pass that copy onto someone else but there is nothing illegal about ripping. How do you get a CD you buy onto your iPod for instance?
I'll correct myself!
In the United Kingdom, making a private copy of copyrighted media without the copyright owner's consent is illegal as of April 2009
Wikipedia
But this may change in the near future as the Government is considering allowing private copies for the purpose of format shifting, as long as you keep the original.

Indeed, as it stands the transferral of copyrighted material to another medium without the consent of the copyright owner is regarded as theft. When you buy a DVD you're not purchasing the film, what you're purchasing is essentially a license to view the film on that particular medium in a private dwelling.
Copyright law. It might make no sense to some, or not matter to other, but it's still law.
My note was also to remind some users that certain topics are off topic. Oddly not everyone reads the posting rules before wading in - funny that.

Not theft, copyright infringement, but we knew what you meant to say.

Well yes but it'll do it automatically without you manually having to rip to disc and then burn.
