What's making you think it's turning itself off spook?
If you have sp2 installed you would get a rather irritating box popping up every few seconds if the firewall is turned off.

Two thoughts:

Doesn't Windows need to be closed down properly in order to remember "current" settings. If something is interupting the closedown I can see this problem occurring.

I believe that there is a virus/trojan that switches Firewall off.
Give your system a good sweep and see if anything pops up.

a lot of viruses try and shut down the anti virus / firewall software, specially the big name ones, most fail tho...luckily

In Internet Explorer, click on Tools, Internet Options, Connections Tab, make sure the connection you're using is highlighted, click on Settings, then click on Properties, Advanced tab, and then make sure that the box is checked to turn the XP firewall on.

I have Zone Alarm's freebie firewall, which works perfectly ok for what I use my pc for.

Is this message coming from the windows XP system, or is it coming from some other software?
I'm in the unfortunate position to have AOHELL and their software doesn't recognise certain firewalls. XP's firewall being one of them.

if you go to control panel / network connections / right click on your connection / advanced - windaz firewall / settings

prolly the best way to check its enabled unless you have sp2 installed, then it should be in control panel itself
