It was going to happen. Saddam served a purpose, p*ssing off Tehran just enough so as to prevent an Islamic super state.

The next thing will be a broad alliance between the Islamic / Arabic nations. This could be a good thing or a bad thing!

Well all I can say is that if they think 'separatists' or 'insurgents' are the biggest problem in Iraq, wait till Iran expands across.

Imagine that, a Shi'ite superstate - well done USA!

Hi,

Interesting reading.

At the moment, by waging assymetric warfare against the Coallition / Iraqi Government forces the insurgents can have a large impact because the firepower and intelligence systems of the US cannot be used - the systems were never developed for counter-insurgency.

If you end up with a large conventional army, as you might with an Iran/Iraq alliance, you get an organisation with defined assets, C3 structures and infrastructure that can be bombed to bits by the Western forces playing to their advantages if such a super-state ever took up arms against Western interests.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the long term. I would say that it will be a good few years before such an alliance bears fruit. In that time it's quite possible for the House of Saud to fall and be replaced by either a more secular or a more religious government. That would alter the balance of power again - especially if it happens before the oil runs out.

Interesting times.

Perhaps we SHOULD be interested in the prospect of increased co-operation in the military sphere between two arab nations who 20 years ago were knocking seven bells out of each other.
