View Full Version : Recorded delivery-royal mail scam.
Billy2shoes 11-07-2005, 17:50 Hi, I dont use royal mail very often. 8 days ago i sent a letter 1st class recorded delivery, still has'nt arrived. it cost 60p+1st stamp. I phoned R.M. cust servs they gave me a load of gobbledegook. after translation they are saying that 1st class recorded delivery goes onto thiere if your lucky list,2nd class does'nt. they dont guarantee that that 1st will get there any quicker, allow 15 days Ha, ha, ha. in my language it means what a rip off, dirty scam, etc what do you think? is it me, did i realy send a 1st class rec del letter. What do you think?
best regards to all.
P.s i,m free this evening if theres any hot chicks on the prowl. oh dear silly 2 shoes.
If it's urgent you should use special delivery.
youwhatref 11-07-2005, 17:58 I cant imagine RM stating that '1st class' goes on the 'if you're lucky list'!!
Hvae you tried tracking it through the web site?? I once sent something and the person at the other end complained they'd not received it after 8 days. On checking tracking it told me they tried to deliver so were holding it at the local office.
However i do agree that RM will probably want to wait 14 days for i to get there which is a bit too much for first class.
We once experienced the total loss of a birthday card for a friends important birthday and that had been sent first class not recorded delivery.
When after a few days of the card not being received, we contacted Royal Mail customer services to be told we would have to give it anything up to 21 days to surface and if it didnt then to get back in touch with them and they would offer a gesture of compensation.
Whilst we waited, we told the tale to someone else we knew who had experienced exactly the same situation some months earlier and they had accepted the gesture of compensation as their item of mail had been lost totally and the gesture !!
A book of more first class stamps for some more mail to get lost attached to !!
Needless to say we didnt bother pursuing the gesture.

i too have been on the recieving end of valuable mail not been delivered or lost & damaged, which is a right royal pain in the ass.
however i do feel that as a country we assume that 1st class means next day, it is only the success of the PO delivering mail quickly that we take for granted the service we receive for the price we pay.
(i've just had a parcel returned after 3 months in the system because the person receiveing wasn't in to sign for it & never collected in from the sorting office - posted 3/3 retuned 27/6)
banesmabes 11-07-2005, 19:17 I've just had an interesting experience with recorded delivery. I sent a mortgage application by 1st class recorded. I checked via the website a few days later and it said that they did not have any details on delivery yet, so I waited a few more days and then checked again, and still, no news. I phoned them up at this point and they said it hadn't been delivered because there had been an evacuation in the sorting office closest to the delivery address. I decided I would actually ring the bank I had sent the application to, because the application had original bank statements and payslips in, so I didn't want to believe that RM may have lost it. And guess what - they had received the application the day after I had posted it!
I decided to keep checking on the RM website to see when they finally twigged on to it being delivered. Now, 4 weeks later, they are still saying it hasn't been delivered and that it is now classed as lost. I was considering claiming the compensation for it anyway, as I have had more than a few problems with RM over the past year and have been entitled to nothing (because I was the intended recipient of lost mail). But on speaking to RM last week they weren't at all concerned that the letter contained original documents that couldn't be replaced - and if they had indeed been lost, could not have been replaced (not the payslips anyway) which would make any mortgage application very difficult. In the advisor's word "the contents have no real value, so you'll receive compensation of a book of stamps". So I just can't be bothered to persue compensation, because you have to go to the post office, get a form to fill out, send it off, and then wait god knows how long for them to decide what to do about it.
As far as I can tell recorded delivery is only useful as a proof of postage and as proof of delivery. It doesn't guarantee delivery at all. I notice that you have to pay a fee to get a copy of the signature - has this always been the case, or is this a recent charge that has been introduced?
LellyBee 11-07-2005, 19:55 For anything important you need to use the Special Delivery service, it's costs a lot more (3.75) but someone has to sign for it on delivery and the level of consequential loss is £500.
I now use this service when sending important stuff like birthday cards for all my nieces, nephews etc, I don't like having to pay 3.75 each time but the cards DO get delivered that way.
After several missing cards and several claims, I received a reply that just stated that my queries had been passed onto their security department. I got a book of first class stamps for my inconvenience, but they weren't actually included with the reply letter  I then phoned them up and asked if they were taking the p**s
I tried posting the cards in a plain brown envelope but still they went "missing", hence the need for Special Delivery.
As yet, nothing has gone "missing" using Special Delivery - touches wood

if the first clss RD is not there within 15 days then they officislly class it as lost.
if it aint there by now then they have unofficially lost it and its only insured for about 30 odd quid.

Just to clarify - it is 15 working days, which is usually 3 weeks after posting - unless there is a bank holiday in there, when it puts it back even further.

if you fill out a lost mail form you can claim up to £28 from royal mail, i have in the past and got what i claimed for so you should have gone ahead and dont listen to people! if it was just a card with nothing in it then they actually send 2 books of 1st class stamps, its just the standard apology thats issued.
recorded delivery does NOT guarentee delivery, it just means the person has to sign for it at the other end, it goes through with all the other mail, if you have anything of importance to send do it special delivery as this is sent to the sorting office with all other special delivery in a seperate sealed bag. special still goes missing very now and then but not as much as normal mail!
