View Full Version : People who walk out of subtitled films
zongamin 10-06-2009, 07:16 Went to see Anything For Her last night
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1217637/
Within 2 minutes of it starting 4 people had walked out because it is in French with subtitles.
This has also happened in 'The Wave', 'The Orphanage' and 'City of God'.
I can't understand the mentality of someone who
a) Doesn't know that the film they are seeing isn't in English before going in
b) Can't stand to read subtitles for a couple of hours
Are people so small minded that they can't watch anything that isn't Hollywood trash?
(Anything For Her is really good - well worth seeing while its still on.)
Could be any number of reasons - i do find that the fact a film is subtitled is rarely explicitly advertised. Apocolypto, Them for instance weren't advertised at all, also a film based on a Michael Connolly book was subtitled in French. None of which i saw at the cinema but watch and own on DVD.
My wife should wear specs and doesn't take them to the cinema unless we know in advance - she can see a movie no problem but has difficulty reading subtitles. Hence we would also walk out.
zongamin 10-06-2009, 08:31 I can see what you mean to an extent - the advertising for The Orphanage seemed to be deliberately misleading - it was made out to be standard 'horror' shocker, and it did hide the fact that it was Spanish.
Not being able to read the subs is a valid reason of course, but I doubt this is why most people walk out.
But I still can't understand why someone wouldn't check before going, at least read a review or even the little blurb in the coming soon magazine at the cinema.
At nearly £7 quid a ticket surely its better to find out what you are going to see before turning up?
Maybe the staff should tell people when selling the tickets?
As i said all the films i mentioned - i would have seen on opening night (as i try to do)not one mentioned subtitles - even Cineworlds magazine didn't publish the fact, nor was it on posters. I figured the French film on a book would be subtitled as everyone in it were French. I read a review a week after the release of Them that is was subtitled, similarly there was a recent Swedish horror released which did not mention subtitles - we probably wouldn't walk out but it is possible we would.
Even a mention on the publicity stuff would be beneficial.

City of God's a brilliant film - their loss.
MatthewBell 16-11-2009, 14:04 I find If a subtitled film is good, you tend to forget half way through that it is actually using subtitles and just appreciate it as a film.
Having said that If the film is on a really big screen like one of the mega sized ones at Cineworld and if you were sat near the front that it could prove difficult , having to keep moving your head to take in the action.
(On a side note I went to watch a 3-D movie recently, the new Final Destination one and didin't even think that beofre going in that I would need to wear the 3D glasses. So because I already wear glasses I had to wear one pair over the other which didn't really work to be honest. )
On one of our TV's at home is a DVD combo with a dodgy remote so when watching films you can't turn subtitles off, it can make a film more enteratining. I was watching the Waterboy with German subtitles and looking at the translations is just funny
I have 5 films on my list to watch which are all subtitled, but my husband can't watch a subtitled film, I think it's 'cause he cant read fast enough lol, but the films I want to watch aren't his cup of tea anyway, so i'll have to watch them on my own. The trouble is, I think a couple of them may be a bit too scary for me to watch on my own!!! Any opinions if the following are scary... Day Watch, Night Watch, Pans Labyrinth, Brotherhood of the Wolf. Apocalypto is my last one but I won't be scared watching that.
TylerXIII 17-12-2009, 14:02 some of the best films I've ever watched are subtitled - Banlieue 13, El mariachi and Shi mian mai fu (House of Flying Daggers). To snub these greats throuh ignorance is just sheer loonacy!
dannybeth09 17-12-2009, 14:08 I dont really like subtitles in films because sometimes I take longer to read the subtitles instead of actually watching the film!! Lol It might just be me, but if you want to read, then read a book!!! You go to a film to watch not read! Xxxx

Definitely agree, some of my favourite films are subtitled. I know people who can't enjoy them because they spend so long trying to read the subtitles that they can't watch the film properly so I can understand why someone would walk out, it's not always a case of laziness to read.
yep city of god is awesome and the orphanage is the scariest but still with an amazing story and its one of my favourite films, I have no problems with subtitles whatsoever.
I find that if anything, it helps you judge peoples reactions and moods whilst they are speaking as you are concentrating on how they are acting more than what they are saying

apocalypto hardly has any talking in it anyway its a great film, very action packed but very upsetting, one of about 5 films I have cried to.
pans labyrinth is a stunning film, not very scary at all but very very good
leviathan13 18-12-2009, 15:36 I once had to turn a subtitled film off once, but there was a reason:
I decided to watch The Seventh Seal in bed one night. However, I was a bit tired so about 10 mins in to it I thought "I know, I'll close my eyes for a minute and just listen to the dialogue" - which was in Swedish!
I suddenly opened my eyes, called myself a few names and decided to watch it at another time. Which I did and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Some people cant' read/read fast enough.
9rota is very good, on youtube.
Flowersfade 30-01-2010, 21:43 The Wave was an excellent movie i enjoy watching foreign movies usually much better than the hollywood trash that dominates the cinema
A lot of people quite simply cannot read fast enough to process the written dialogue alongside what is happening on screen.
Then there are some who have the "if I wanted to read I'd get a book out attitude". Fair enough, but you'll miss out on the greatest films ever made, the majority of which are not in English.
I do wonder though why people don't up and out when they start talking Elvish in the LOTR films or German in Inglorious (which QT mischievously opens with 10+ minutes of German dialogue).
muddycoffee 01-02-2010, 12:12 As for doing research.
This is all well and good, but what happens when you get to the cinema a little late and the film you wanted to see is either full or not showing and you have to quickly choose another.
This has happened to me more than once. Sometimes you just drop lucky and see something you had never heard of which is great.
By the way £7 is not expensive to see a film. If I was sat in a pub drinking beer for the same time I could easily spend £15 or £20
vwkittie 10-02-2010, 15:41 Agreed, I have an Unlimited pass and might well just pick the first title that appealed to me!
I would probably watch a film with subs but it would drive me dotty I think
i think apocolypto was my first subtitled film i have seen and thoroughly enjoyed it. it was tiring though having to read when i was tired but i certainly wouldnt walk out

I have no problem with subtitles at all, but I do take the point above about advertising being misleading. And I have seen trailers for recent film such as Micmacs and Girl With the Dragon Tattoo which I think are clearly designed to mislead people into thinking they are in English.
Angel Ho 28-04-2010, 22:42 2 films with subtitles I've seen at the cinema are Angel-A and Let the Right One In. Both were suprisingly amazing.
bobgirlsnake 28-04-2010, 23:07 one of the best sub films i have seen has to be pan's labyrinth! i love it, my friends wont watch it because of the subtitles.
