Im wanting to treat my b/f for his 40th birthday and take him away for the weekend somewhere. We've done the usual coast holidays and want to do something different, well something that wont break the bank either.

Any suggestions?

I was going to suggest one of the weird houses in Portmeirion, but I think it's quite pricey.

How about Edinburgh? Easy jet fly there quite cheaply, then find a cheapo hotel, or drive up there (4 and a bit hours ish)

How about somewhere like this (http://www.langtrymanor.co.uk/). I went years ago and it was nice then, Bournemouth would be great if the weather stays nice.

Personally I like Blackpool for a long weekend, but its not exactly original!

My fiance and I went to Ironbridge for a weekend and stayed in a B&B called The Boatmans Brothel.......

It was great and nice and cheap. Its especially nice in this kind of weather. Lots to do and lots of nice pubs.

Sorry i haven't got a link for it, but it should be easy to find.

Its now called the Severn Trow

Why does it have to be in the UK? With cheap flights Europe can be affordable. I went to Barcelona for my 40th......absolutely brill! Also done Munich & Dublin fairly recently......not outrageously expensive. Worth thinkin about.

I took my bf away for his birthday, and we went to the Hilton Hotel just outside Disley - I think its called Moorside. Only about an hour's drive away, on the edge of Lyme Park. Lovely walks, and a wonderful Health Club, free to residents. It's got a wet area with steam rooms, sauna, jacuzzi etc. You can get dinner, bed and breakfast deals that won't break the bank.

It'd help if I knew more about both your interests.

If you're into historic stuff and Olde Worlde pubs then both Chester and York have plenty to offer. Glastonbury is also nice but tends to get rather packed.

If you're into a quieter weekend look into renting a houseboat in the Norfolk Broads.

If you decide to go abroad instead I can thoroughly recommend Prague. Its quite cheap to get there, accomodation is reasonably priced and there is literally something for everyone there. I am addicted to the place.

Regards

Richard

I would definitely opt for the Norfolk Broads.. we stayed in a lovely water mill place in Aylsham, but this is going back about 18yrs, but for the food (yummy samphire!) and the beautiful surroundings I would recommend it anytime!

Visit one of the UK's cities that you have never had the chance to look around.

You can put together an interesting, fairly inexpensive break using sites such as Easjet and BMIbaby for the flight and get good quality discounted accomodation from Lastminute.com and Laterooms.com.

My wife and I do this at least once a year and have enjoyed breaks in edinburgh, Belfast, Glasgow and Newcastle.
