planted some african marigolds a week ago. something is attacking the stem/stalk just above the ground, like its being knored away. the plant falls over then dies. put slug pellets down, has anyone any ideas what is causing it?

Sounds like slugs/snails/catapillers to me. Are they in pots or in the ground?
