View Full Version : What's your favourite beer? wwp8 11-07-2005, 14:31 just wondering whats your favourite beer, foxycoxy 11-07-2005, 14:34 Mmmmm......Fosters..... But sadly only got Carlsberg in fridge... (remnants from party). May have to resort to the evil 'berg in this hot weather! Lickable 11-07-2005, 14:36 Newcastle Brown is my fav. Can't beat a bit of the dog. :) Joelc 11-07-2005, 14:39 A nice pint of Pale Rider, Ale rather then beer tho. Joel youwhatref 11-07-2005, 14:42 Dont touch bitter or beer but lager wise, Fosters for me too. I tend to like the Aussie beers for some reason!!! :D Never got into Budweiser as not keen on the taste and Stella gives me a headache after one pint (must be a light-weight!) spyro2000 11-07-2005, 14:44 Its all about Red Stripe. Cant be beaten Ousetunes 11-07-2005, 14:50 What a cracking question for a hot summer's day! Bitters - when on top form (which it rarely is) I like Timothy Taylor Landlord, Theakston Old Peculiar, John Smith's Magnet and the old, original version of Ward's. The Kelham Island range is good also. Bottle beers - Worthington White Shield with the sediment in the bottle (which some thicko bar staff tip straight into the glass), TT Landlord (IPA) and once upon a time, Newquay Steam Beer (remember that?). Also, at Christmas, Robinson's Old Tom which you can get in the Bull's Head, Castleton - a true winter brew at around 9% ABV! Lagers - Stella, Kronenbourg (sp?) but if I want to last all night then Extra Cold Carling seems fine. I'm partial to Strongbow cider too. foxycoxy 11-07-2005, 14:52 Never got into Budweiser as not keen on the taste and Stella gives me a headache after one pint (must be a light-weight!) [/B][/QUOTE] Have to agree with you there, Stella might be expensive but it sure is the root of all evil, it is rank and all the people i know says it makes people lairy when they drink it!! cgksheff 11-07-2005, 15:03 Right now? In this heat? Anything as long as it is COLD!!!! CaptainSwing 11-07-2005, 15:09 Mmm, so many to choose from. I like beers that you can taste, with lots of hops. When I lived down south this included things like Brakspear's or Hop Back Summer Lightning. Whether cask beer is any good or not depends critically on the skill of the people running the pub - often they're sadly disappointing. Compared to some places we're lucky in Sheffield in that department. Good ones include: Last time I was in the Rutland I had an absolutely cracking few pints of Timothy Taylor Landlord. The Pictish Gold (?) in the Kelham Island. Whatever they've got at the right-hand end of the bar in the Cask & Cutler (changes all the time but always in a similar style). I also like various Belgian beers - they've got a fair choice at the Devonshire Cat for instance, and some of the staff know how to handle them too. (Bit on the pricey side, mind.) Ah, White Shield - I'd forgotten that but yes that's also lovely. Happy_Guy 11-07-2005, 15:12 Labbats is the one 4 me nick2 11-07-2005, 15:14 Lager - Budvar (like Budweiser, but with flavour) or Peroni. Beer - Winter Warmer (I think it's called that) they sold it in the Bath Hotel over Christmas. Bully_Beef 11-07-2005, 15:19 Mmmmm Red Stripe or Becks. If I'm just going for bog-standard lager I'll always plump for Carling. Does anyone else think that Murphy's Stout is far better than Guinness? bellis 11-07-2005, 15:31 Originally posted by Bully_Beef Mmmmm Red Stripe or Becks. If I'm just going for bog-standard lager I'll always plump for Carling. Does anyone else think that Murphy's Stout is far better than Guinness? no murphys tastes really sweet , nothing can beat a nice pint of Guinness i had to go through hell last night none of the black stuff in the manchester apollo just carling and cafferys ,2.80 a can:o RPG 11-07-2005, 15:38 Too many to mention, but in this sort of heat: Spendrups Old Gold Erdinger Weiss Pale Rider (cold & fresh!) Generally however: Erdinger Pikantus Aventinus *Ryan* 11-07-2005, 15:54 toss up between red stripe newkie brown, or... the lovely corona.. indeed. owdlad 11-07-2005, 16:22 There is no such thing as bad beer,it's just that some is better than others. I agree with one of the previous posters who liked the "old" Wards and these days there are so many small breweries doing a good job that it's difficult to choose. So let's just say that on a day like today if it's wet and cold it has to be good :D Greybeard 11-07-2005, 16:33 Originally posted by owdlad I agree with one of the previous posters who liked the "old" Wards You mean unfiltered Porter water, the stuff that smelled like a sewer ? :gag: Draught Bass for me, cool but not chilled. H.P 11-07-2005, 16:38 I like the bottled ales, especially honey beer brewed with a dolop of honey it just makes it that bit sweeter :) owdlad 11-07-2005, 16:42 Originally posted by Greybeard You mean unfiltered Porter water, the stuff that smelled like a sewer ? :gag: Draught Bass for me, cool but not chilled. That's the stuff Greybeard, I had forgotten the stench :D it was allegedly because the spring water it was taken from drained out of the General Cemetery, that's why it had body :hihi: Lucky_13 11-07-2005, 17:31 Cant beat Corona or Coors light - both lovely - dead refreshing and at a place like wetherspoons dirt cheap as well. the_rudeboy 11-07-2005, 17:59 Pale Rider gets my vote......quality! Partial to Rock Spalt n all. Magnets a nice drink too tho. Sod it.....i'm off to the pub........ scubatony61 11-07-2005, 18:19 Nobody seems to like the one and only "STELLA"   Talking about Stella has anybody or is anybody collecting the "Stellascreens" ring pulls I have one code number but still hoping for more:clap:   Regards :) Tony spiffymonkey 11-07-2005, 18:29 Mmm... beeeer.... What do I like? Let's see: Abbeydale Moonshine Abbeydale Absolution Timmy Taylors Kelham Pale Rider Wellington Stannington Stout Edale Kinder Stout (and Kinder Stouter ... mmmm) Youngs Waggledance Old Peculiar and just about any other beer, ale, porter, stout or mild that passes my lips. Not a lager fan, though. Longcol 11-07-2005, 20:22 Wet, chilled, in a glass, containing alcohol. Favourite draught Taylor's Landlord (when on form) - although I've probably supped more Tetley's than anything else. Like my beer to have a tight creamy head - too many pubs these days don't bother with a sparkler so the head goes after a couple of sups. Like a Guinness or several, but has to be poured slowly like in the Dog. In this warm weather I'll go for lager - no really bothered which. Bottled I like Badgers Champion. Like Ousetunes I've got very fond memories of Newquay Steam Beer - that was the business. Apparantly went bust in the mid 90's. Draggletail 11-07-2005, 20:33 Kronenbourg 1664 - (I like 5% beers, but this is the best) Don't like the Aussie ones, they all taste too sweet for me.... As for ales - Abbot at 5% and Old Hooky at four point something  Draggletail 11-07-2005, 20:37 Originally posted by Longcol Like my beer to have a tight creamy head - too many pubs these days don't bother with a sparkler so the head goes after a couple of sups. Same here. Makes me very grumpy when the head goes:( waggy 11-07-2005, 20:47 Robbinsons mild...now that ive had to move back to stockport from sheffield :( (if you go in any pub in stockport all they sell is robinsons, but its well worth trying if your unfortunate enough to end up in stockport). And boddingtons, not the best in a pub but its great tinned. Now ive moved out of sheffield ive noticed even more how much better sheffield is to manchester and stockport. dirtybristow 11-07-2005, 21:42 I have a friend who'll only drink Stella when he's in a pub. If they don't have it, he'll settle for Kronenburg or similar. My favourite is Leffe blonde. off your tits in three glasses and it tastes fantastic. For sustained drinking I like Guinness, self limiting as you can't physically get too much of it inside you... madblast 11-07-2005, 22:00 my fave just has to be boddingtons, or worthingtons or even caffreys, im definatly at a beer girl. clogginchris 11-07-2005, 22:06 Fullers Pride Taylors Landlord Black Sheep Pale Rider could go on, but its getting late and it's making me thirsty! robbie 11-07-2005, 22:42 Summer Lighting. Had a couple of bottles of "Worthington White Shield" tonight, to say I was disappointed would be an understatment :( I know White Shield has been brewed by different breweries in recent years, it at least has been a decent bottle conditioned ale, the bottles I had tonight were as far from a decent ale. I will have to nip out for a couple of bottles of Pale Rider to get rid of the taste ;) We may not be able to get Hendersons here in Lincolnshire, but at least I know an offie that stocks Kelham Island beers. Cliff Clavin 07-06-2006, 21:41 Coors Light I prefer Light Beer in the US though it tastes lots better than in the UK. The fridge is always stocked with bottles of Coors Light and yes I don't like to keep Guiness in, well it's colour reminds me of a sore subject ;0) sheff6nic 07-06-2006, 21:53 just discovered frulli- strawberry beer !very yummy and surely one of your five a day:hihi: defstef 07-06-2006, 22:28 Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter. King among bitters. My staple these days (and for the past few years) is large quantities of Stella. I'm actually regressing. Staropramen if it's available. I also like Red Stripe, and prefer to drink it at room temperature for some reason. Oh, and the other day, I got some 5.6% Polish Tyskie lager from Eylen Supermarket on London Rd to have at Peace in the Park. My Polish brethren sure know how to get hammered. Żywiec too is a nice beer. When it comes to real ales, I'll try any new one that comes my way. Was liking Spitfire at the Lezzie - hope they still have it on. Went through a phase of being addicted to that Fursty Ferret in bottles - mmm. Right now I fancy Hoegaarden with a slice of lime in it. sufc_tom 07-06-2006, 23:23 Wow, Im more of a lager man myself but as someone previously put, once I step foot in Wetherspoons I am like a kid in a candy shop! Corona, Fosters (Ice), Carling, Holsten Pils. If i'm in the pub then its got to be Stones Bitter - how on a Sheffield based website can Stones not get mentioned once! - especially nice with a bag of salted nuts. But if its hot or warm, its got to be something like bottled Corona or Sol or if its a pint, Carling Cold or Kronenbourg will always go down well. Defstef, Your choice of Sam Smith's Old Brewery Bitter is the wise choice of a true connoisseur. In my opinion the company make the finest beer in England, bar none. Have you tried their Nut Brown Ale? It is absolutely delicious but hard to obtain in some parts. As a Sheffielder now living in Lancashire, I sometimes order crates of the stuff through a local off-licence. I strongly recommend it! NEKRO138 08-06-2006, 08:38 I like Bud or Budvar, I'll drink either. Corona with some lime in it is a winner too. RoyalRegular 08-06-2006, 08:40 Almost anything from Bradfield Brewery, but the best has to be their Blonde bitter......hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! taxman 08-06-2006, 09:38 The Cask and Cutler has had nearly 6000 different beers in its time and as I drink there 2-4 times a week I have sampled a good many. My usual tipple is anything pale, golden and around 4% ABV - anything from the Glentworth or Durham breweries always hits the mark although I think Abbeydale Moonshine, when on top form, is fantastic. Some of the stouts and porters are also fantastic, especially for a last half at the end of the night. Being from over the border I always miss Holts Bitter and J W Lees. Bottled - Youngs Double Chocolate Stout makes me drool just thinking about it. Lager - Erdinger or Budvar (spits on fake US p*ss water made from soddin' rice FFS!!) Bambi_ 08-06-2006, 09:51 I love a nice pint of Carling Premier or Grolsch (sp?), I also quite like the bottles of Tiger & Cobra beer. I also like my pints of Calling extra cold..........mmmmmmmm anyone fancy the pub, I am gaggin for a drink nah! absynthfairy 08-06-2006, 10:15 I like pints of carling extra cold or guiness extra gold too but they're not the best for my diet so I've been trying to switch to bottles of becks which have fewer weightwatchers points in... Have been frequenting The Sheaf View Heeley Bottom just lately and love the cherry beer they have on tap there - also like the Fruli strawberry beer - bit pricey though! £1.80 per half!:o aphradizzyak 08-06-2006, 10:32 i adore absolution...tis like moonshine but premium strength...yummy! have started drinkin merrydown cider and ice on a hot summers day...dangerous but brilliant! This is a thirst quenching, deceptively strong summer ale which is perfect for this weather. sazk23 08-06-2006, 10:57 I like Carling, (not extra cold as it goes flat quicker than normal Carling, FACT) pint of, of course. Half a lager goes nowhere. Bottles of Bud, yuuuuuuuuummy  And i guess if im pushed, Stella(bottled). I used to drink a lot of this at one point, but then i went off it. I can sup pints of Stella, but i become a wife beater, i dont think the husbands appreciated a drunk female attacking their wives hahahaha *Turbo* 08-06-2006, 11:00 1664 in the Nelson:headbang: kieran 08-06-2006, 11:04 abbot ale, any of the specials at the sheaf is always good, frulli raspberry and form the larger 1664, asahi, cobra and kingfisher Danny_Boy 08-06-2006, 11:22 Draught 1- Stella 2- Staropramen 3- Becks Vier 4- Fosters 5- Sam Smiths (funny name) Pilsner Bottles 1- Koppenburg cider 2- Brahma 3- Stella 4- Becks 5- Peronni Nastro Azuro emma2686 08-06-2006, 11:23 ill drink most kinds of lager but i do enjoy san miguel, it tastes especially good on a hot summers day and reminds me of my holidays :) CaptainSwing 08-06-2006, 11:59 i thought erdinger was a wheat beer...does that class as lager still? The difference between lager and ale is explained here (http://www.realbeer.com/library/beerbreak/archives/beerbreak20001130.php) - basically, lagers are brewed more slowly, at a lower temperature, with the yeast sitting at the bottom, the opposite being the case for ales. A good lager will typically have a 'cleaner' taste; a good ale will typically have a more complex, earthy, fruity flavour, though there are of course a huge range of different tastes for both types. A wheat beer, I think, is one that's based on wheat rather than the usual barley, and so I guess could be either lager or ale. I'd guess that Erdinger is a lager. The point taxman was making is that the American version of Budweiser uses all sorts of non-standard ingredients and is considered to be completely tasteless and generally rather nasty by a lot of beer enthusiasts. (Not the) Michael Jackson explains here (http://www.beerhunter.com/documents/19133-001717.html) why he thinks the original Czech version, Budweiser Budvar, is better. Deepcarowl 08-06-2006, 12:12 Anything cold, wet and alcoholic will do for me, but the all time favourite has to be black sheep bitter  ninjatoon 08-06-2006, 12:42 Super bock!!! None of the Pubs in Stannington sell it though  RoyalRegular 08-06-2006, 12:47 What about the Robin Hood? They used to have it on occasionally, but to sample Black Sheep at it's best go to the brewery at Masham. Gorgeous stuff! No, they don't have it in the Robin Hood, they do have Farmer's blonde beer from the Brewery up Bradfield though, mmm... Lovely stuff. LHarman 08-06-2006, 12:57 I like flat warm bitter beer, am I odd? I love ESB, with all the gas knocked out of it, flat with no head on it.We used to brew our own, grew our own hops and even once malted our own barley, used to make some fantastic ales from old books. EDIT from hops and barley, not old books!, had trouble getting the fermentation going! Rich 08-06-2006, 13:01  You like warm beer?! Are you quite mad?! Warm beer is nasty... RoyalRegular 08-06-2006, 13:05 I prefer lager freezing cold, but like my bitter at room temperature. Try Australia for cold beer.....they even keep the glasses in the freezer! Session bitter: Hook Norton Best Best bitter: Bateman XXXB Old ale: Robinson's Old Tom Porter: Clark's Ram Tam Stout: Proper Guinness (I'm Irish, it just has to be......) Cider: Saxon Press Greensleeves (yum yum yum yum), and two more from any category, but just cos I love em ......, Theakston Old Peculier, and Roger's Conqueror (hasn't been brewed for years, but this I still think was the best brew to come out of the Frog and Parrot, much better than Reckless, and that was lovely ..... aah, the memories .....) slh73 08-06-2006, 15:56 No single favourite, but what I drink depends on the pub Im in. In the Sheaf, its Erdinger. Dev Cat, Erdinger again. Frog and Parrot, Hoegaarden or Magners. Red Deer, Bombadier or Budvar. Washington, Moonshine, Bath Hotel, Magners or Bitburger. As a Sheffielder now living in Lancashire, I sometimes order crates of the stuff through a local off-licence. I strongly recommend it! Hi timo, my apologies for the late reply, sir. Ever since I made that post, it has been my mission to become as innebriated as possible. Currently, I am as ****** as a fart. Having grown up a mere 3 miles from Tadcaster, Sam Smiths was always ridiculously cheap. When I left Bramham in 1999, Sam Smiths (Old Brewery Bitter) was a mere £1.13 a pint in The Red Lion. Crazy days. I've had their nut brown ale, and their pale ale and a few others. Their range of lager is supplied by the Ayingerbräu brewery in Austria, I believe (it could be Bavaria, but I can't be bothered to verify this at this time). In the summer, they had a Germanic um-pah-pah band playing in the yard, which backs onto the beck in which I used to build dams. A rural upbringing, you see? timo 09-06-2006, 08:23 Cheers, Defstef! Long may you continue to enjoy Sam Smith's sublime fares. johnbradley 09-06-2006, 08:38 The daddy of all beers - John Smiths!! Yes, FWIW, Ayinger is one of the breweries in the Munich area. Speaking of which, one of my favourite beers from round there, apart from the famous ones like Schneider Weisse or Augustiner Hell, is Andechser Doppelbock Dunkel, a dark, malty beer a bit like the very best Belgian Trappist beers (e.g. Westvleteren 12), but not so heavy/strong. If you ever happen to be in Munich, you can get all these Bavarian beers for about 50p-£1 a bottle, in shops (not in the beer halls, which are more expensive). Speaking of that, I wonder if there are any shops in Sheffield that have a big range of this kind of beer? I've had a look around but haven't found one yet. timo 09-06-2006, 09:17 The daddy of all beers - John Smiths!! Also quite partial to Fosters  SWFC00, Perhaps you might appreciate that titan of American beers, Budweiser. Mind you, best not to.
