View Full Version : Landlords getting away with anything.
waxonwaxoff 08-06-2009, 15:12 Howcome their are supposed to be strict rules on renting a property but when it comes down to it its utter rubbish.
Since moving into this property our landlord has tried to put the rent up in the first week. Had the house nearly repossesed. We had to empty all the previous tennants possessions. Although the house still has lots of his stuff in it and in the garden. Plus the loft has a load of boxes from some woman he used to know that he wont shift. He has his post and parcels delivered to our house. He was supposed to tile the bathroom and said he would do it as soon as the wall paper was stripped. I did that straight away it still isnt done. He said he would do the kitchen. (I have no kitchen) I even got him a pine kitchen to put in. All it needed was worktops. I have one carpet that is a site to be seen in itself. All the others were to grim for words to describe. We have no safety certificates and have had to go to the council and withhold the rent to get this done. During the safety inspection the gas engineer found a major gas leak caused by someone tampering with the meter pipes.
We have had drunks and druggies banging on the door, one covered in sick and cider at 11.00 in the morning while I was at home alone. All asking for the landlord. The list goes on and on yet we are being made to feel unreasonable. How do they get away with it?
rain~n~shine 08-06-2009, 15:16 omg i really feel for you, can you not report the landlord to the landlord association or something!!!! this is shocking and im sure deffinatly not allowed!!!!
me personally would up sticks and move, can the council not offer you temperary accommadation, or anything, surely a bedsit would be more suitable!!!
funkymiss 08-06-2009, 15:26 I have rented from 5 landlords in Sheffield and each one has been a total con. They are all the same - letting agencies, private landlords... Should name and shame them!
I don't really know where you stand with a council property but I'd ring him every day until he removes the rubbish. Bin his mail unless he picks it up from the back garden or redirects it within a few days.
Ms Macbeth 08-06-2009, 15:53 Might be worth having a word with the Private rented section in the council, details here: http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/housing-services/private-sector-housing/private-landlords/private-rented-project/tenant-drop-in-sessions
Not all landlords are bad. Some are very good but have bad tenants. There are of course the bad payers, no shortage of them. Tenants that run up arrears and then disappear. Tenants that are noisy and untidy. The list goes on. But it seems in business we are not to complain but get complained about. Well I do my best as a landlord but have plenty to complain about over the years about tenants. Is this allowed on a forum such as this?
ricgem2002 11-06-2009, 06:20 retired i hope you are a good landlord but you got to remember you are out to make a profit .im a builder and the houses i been to work on some have been dirty/unsafe regarding gas and electric .what gets me is if you got a nice house up to standards the majority of people will look after your house (by the way i dont mean you personally i mean landlords)but you get a dodgy landlord who dosent care about his tenants and the trouble begins, so if your a good landlord you will get good feedback and people will be after your propertys but on the other side of the coin if you dont care about your propertys neither will (some)of the tenants
Mr Gobby 12-06-2009, 19:19 As a landlord of quite a few properties around the area, I am in a business, and like all businesses I'm in it for a profit. What tenants don't release is that the upkeep of a property cost a lot of money.Do they care no, they whinge whine and make stupid demands, some are fine and respect what is mine others are better of finding a rock to sleep under .Then there are builders who come to look at a simple job what do i get ( Short intake of breath, scratch thier head and almost tell me the house is falling down ).
What for a bit of pointing on a ridge tile, sometimes thier just as bad as the tenants greedy grasping gits.

you've just come across the same as every other ***head landlord people are complaining about on here and in general.
you need to understand that these tenants are your customer and if things aren't up to scratch they've every right to complain.
cchaplin 12-06-2009, 19:46 Hi
I'm a landlady of a number of properties. All my properties are in excellent condition and when a tenant moves in the property is always spotless with the appropriate certification in place and a detailed Information Pack on how all the appliances work etc etc.
I am always courtious with my tenants and treat them with the up most respect. If something goes wrong with the property of contents is is fixed immediately.
In the 15 years I have been a landlady I have only had problem tenants on 2 occassions. So generally I think the landlord/tenant can be a harmonious one if both show mutual respect and co-operation.
To avoid rogue landlords I would suggest a tenant only rent properties off professional landladys(lords) whom are members of the Sheffield Responsible Landlord Scheme AND a landlords association i.e SADLA or Residential Landlords Association.
If anyone is looking for accommodation or would like to be added to my list of waiting tenants please text me on 0775 4811443. I have properties in S1, S3, S18 & S20.
Thanks
All the more reason for all landlords and letting agents to be properly regulated, and not just able to join a scheme if they feel like it! Cchaplin, you sound like a fantastic landlady

Your very immature to say the least and you have to understand that some tenants are very disrespectful to other peoples property. I have had tenants not pay thier rent and leave their calling card but wiping excrement all over the walls not satisfied with that they smash furniture oh yes there complete lowlifes ,do you realise the cost to have it not only cleaned but to be completely decorated as well .Yes i am in business hardly a crime is it and all of my property's are in excellent condition that does not give anyone the right to abuse what's mine as for calling me a dick head i suggest you grow up.

and quite a lot of landlords are disrespectful too! you only have to read a few threads on here to see that.
I myself have had many issues with landlords and so feel well placed to comment
your post did come across quite arrogant and for the record it wasn't dick head I put :) and the arrogance in which your post was written was the reason why

Maybe you should make sure they have nothing to complain about?
ricgem2002 14-06-2009, 10:44 let us know if you get a offer from a landlord off here tiiff

I will do, thanks ricgem:)
Mr Gobby 14-06-2009, 16:14 Maybe you should make sure they have nothing to complain about?
Oh i do,the trouble is you always get one who think they own the place
they can wish i suppose.
It's good to see people from the other side of the counter on here. Not all customers are saints. Some are good and some are bad. But its disheartening when you do whats right and hopefully you might make a profit bearing in mind how property prices have dropped lately only for a customer to rip you off. People are only human and we all love something for nothing even if it means not paying the rent and then doing a moonlight shift.
For a business to short change a customer that is wrong, but for a customer to short change a business well that's seems negotiable. Perhaps the profits can pay for it as profit seems to be a naughty word but who really cares when someone makes a loss?
Remember a while back when the banks and British Gas was making huge profits? Good for them, it shows that some British industries still know how to be a business and we can compete with the Germans, French and lately the Chinese and Indians. But listen to the media these companies where wrong to be making a profit. But when our Industries fail like Rover, LDV and the High Street shops who really cares? So long as we keep our jobs.
Something else to bear in mind. Property has to be purchased. Some landlords have sacrificed their standards of living in their early years to save up and invest so as to make life easier in their later years. Not so much in it for a profit but for a pension.
Be proud of our Sainsbury's, Tesco and Morrisons. British Airways, M&S and Nissan in Sunderland and all the other surviving British Industries. You dont have to look far to see what happens when the foreign Companies buy out our Companies, British Steel for example.
Rant over! (for now anyway).
Mr Gobby 14-06-2009, 18:32 Totally agree,it's not my wish to upset anyone but running a property for someone else to live in comes with a lot of stringent rules and regulations
that's if your a credible landlord. I have worked dam hard working from nothing
to achieve something ,i work on the basis that i respect what other people have so there's no reason why others can't respect what is mine that's all i ask .There have been occasions when a tenant has not been able to pay the months rent i haven't sent in the heavy mob demanding or threatening
i have been and always will be understanding to my tenants needs, however there are some that literally take the P*** and that i find unacceptable .
