View Full Version : Fish and Chips or Indian mikey 14-03-2003, 22:23 Just doing a bit of vital research here. Please vote and add your views. poppy 14-03-2003, 22:25 It's GOT to be fish n chips (although I prefer chips n sausage) mikey 14-03-2003, 22:28 Thanks Poppy. I do like Fish and Chips myself but I beleive the British public now prefer the good old curry. Lets see the results of the vote fronbow 15-03-2003, 11:17 Fish n Chips for me! But what about Chinese? Sidla 15-03-2003, 15:20 Give me good old British food any day! mikey 16-03-2003, 15:22 Fish and chips is just in the lead. Get voting mikey 17-03-2003, 13:54 Indian now in the lead, but there is only one vote in it. Im bringing it back to the top of the forum to get a few more votes mikey 29-09-2003, 10:35 Thought I'd bring this back to the top, as it was back in the early days. DaBouncer 29-09-2003, 10:41 Chish and Fips for me! :? However if you would have had Chinese as an option.... Chinese would win hands down! max 29-09-2003, 10:42 Happy now Mikey? My partner makes far better curries than you can get from a takeaway but we tend to have the reduced fat chips when we have f&c at home. That's why I voted f&c, for the fat. upholder 29-09-2003, 10:52 Fish n Chips Especially on the sea front, can't beat em. John 29-09-2003, 11:11 The problem with fish and chips is there is only fish and chip on the menu, unless baked beans and mushy peas count. Whereas an Indian menu, well there are too much to choose from. Nan bread, Poppadoms, potato and onion baji, samosas, rice in various flavours and not forgetting the wide range of curry flavours and spiciness. I could live on Indian for a month because I can vary my choices but can I live on fish and chips for a month? No, so for this reason an Indian wins it for me. Moon Maiden 29-09-2003, 11:17 Fish and Chips - although I haven't yet found a chippy in Sheffield that understands what a portion of chips actually is!! Nor do they seem to understand that when i want fish I don't want ten tonne of batter and a sardine sized fish!! but hey - compared to the indian places I have eaten they beat em hands down. I am a chinese food fan myself. Currently anything with cashew nuts in em - mmmmmmmmmmmm Moon mikey 29-09-2003, 11:19 Originally posted by upholder Fish n Chips Especially on the sea front, can't beat em. Yeah its horses for courses, I wouldnt dream of going to Cleethorpes and not having fish and chips it would be rude. (Cleethorpes= Best Fish and Chips) But take me to Bradford and I wouldn't dream of having fish and chips. :D cosywolf 29-09-2003, 11:32 Chish and Fips for me. Still remember sitting down with them all wrapped in newspaper and being positively encouraged by my mother to eat with my fingers. Strange they never taste quite so good now as I remember tho... alchresearch 29-09-2003, 12:17 I had a fantastic fishcake, chips and peas from Mannings in Woodhouse on saturday. You really appreciate them if you don't have them very often. The Admiral in Beighton offered to make me a load and freeze them to take back home! DaBouncer 29-09-2003, 12:43 I'll say it again NEWFIELD GREEN CHIPPY (Gleadless Road) have THE best Chips in Sheffield. Try and you'll see! Carlwarker 29-09-2003, 14:31 I voted for fish & chips - but I prefer pizza after or during a cold beer session - can't stand the 'muck' they put in so-called curries. Carlwarker 29-09-2003, 14:32 Originally posted by DaBouncer I'll say it again NEWFIELD GREEN CHIPPY (Gleadless Road) have THE best Chips in Sheffield. Try and you'll see! Toward your neck of the wood - the chippie at Manor Top are pretty good. DaBouncer 29-09-2003, 14:42 Having tried both I can say, hand on heart that Newfield Green are A LOT better. Carlwarker 29-09-2003, 14:51 I bow to your experience DB - have only tried the Manor Top one. In my area, the one where the old Forum Picture House was on Herries Road is the best, even though the one on Taplin Road/Hawthorne Rd won the 'best' award 3 or 4 years ago. mikey 29-09-2003, 15:01 For a quint essential english fish supper (sit down) try Steels in Cleethorpes, complete with pot of tea, and sliced white bread and butter (well margerine actually) *Twinkle* 29-09-2003, 15:49 Chips, fishcake and curry..........MMMMMM!!!! purplepippa 30-09-2003, 01:26 Chinese every time I'm afraid!! But speaking of chippies, is there *anywhere* in Sheffield where you can get steak and kidney pudding (not pie)??? Where I come from (Lancashire <audible intake of breath>) I always had steak and kidney pudding and chips from the chippy, but I've never been able to find it in Sheffield. It's amazingly moorish and delicious and I really miss it! Any ideas? Funke88 30-09-2003, 02:47 Difficult choice. I like both. Fish n' chips on a Friday is a ritual though in our house. fuzzy 28-10-2003, 15:26 now mmm which to choose? Always have fish and chips when i go home to Grimsby. And Mikey, Steels in Cleethorpes, ain't that a bit posh. Ernie Becketts across the road is where we always went but my grans friend worked in there and so did i when i was still at school. Curry always go out with the girls for curry and there r some fairly good ones up in Crookes and around and so much choice. So sorry guys think it may have to be the curry. But fish and chips is nice for a change, with mushy peas, and yes the Broomhill friery is best, as said in other chippy thread. WintersMist 28-10-2003, 15:29 Fish and Chips. And can anyone tell me why if you eat them by the seafront do they taste sooooo much better? Ummm quite fancy some now..... nomme 28-10-2003, 15:35 Hmmm. Fuzzy thinks it's weird but I like fish 'n chips with curry sauce. OK - chip shop curry sauce is nothing like proper indian curry but I like it just the same. Yum. Lianndi 30-10-2003, 13:15 Interesting discussion on food. I would like to add two new insights 1. The best fish and chips I have had was in Scotland...Glasgow actually, contact me if you want more details :P 2. I want to add another type of food to the mix - West Indian food...now I know that few of you can make a truly informed decision until you have had a taste ;) , so I am happy to announce and up and coming 'food afternoon' on November 22nd! Details to follow  mikey 30-10-2003, 15:28 Anybody see the documentry last night on Curry, BBC2 8-9pm? Funny stuff, and quite an insight into what is becoming our National dish. Lianndi 12-11-2003, 17:32 Any one on for that lovely West Indian meal that I promised? There IS a small cost but u get lovely food, a drink and the chance to socialise with a range of people. PM me for details Deavon 14-09-2005, 21:38 I do love an Indian... when I take the notion. (Fish and Chips is a bit bland). redrobbo 14-09-2005, 21:45 Originally posted by Lianndi Interesting discussion on food. I would like to add two new insights 1. Bit far to travel - won't they be cold by the time you get home to eat them? :hihi: redrobbo 14-09-2005, 21:46 Originally posted by mikey Just doing a bit of vital research here. Chips in today's society of healthy eating are too dry and should be greasy. I'd definately opt for a curry if I'm going to indulge myself! spyro2000 15-09-2005, 00:05 Originally posted by cosywolf Chish and Fips I once got crucified for saying that... " I fancy some Chips and fish" "Dont you mean fish and chips" "Thats what I said" "No you didnt, you said Chips and fish" "So what, same thing" "No it isnt, you are supposed to say fish and chips" "ermmmm ok then" But anyway... I prefer Indian out of the 2 as there is more choice than simple fish and chips. If the question was British meal or Indian, then my answer may have been different. timo 15-09-2005, 08:10 As a Sheffield ex-pat living in Southport, I/we have access to a superb Indian Restaurant called Lal Qila, acclaimed far and wide. So, for me, it would be Indian everytime here. However, that decision is made easier by the plain fact that there are no decent Fish and Chip shops in Southport. In fact, I have never tasted good Fish and Chips anywhere in Lancashire. They are invariably a soggy, greasy mess. A disgrace really to a national dish. When we visit friends and family in Sheffield I regularly go for Fish and Chips. Sheffield-style chips are usually delicious, and the [almost unique] Fishcakes make my mouth water just to think of. So, if in my beloved 'real' home of Sheffield, it would be definately Fish and Chips every time. If you are having some today, raise a chip to me , exiled as I am on the wrong side of the Pennines. They don't even know what a breadcake is! viking 15-09-2005, 08:22 Originally posted by Moon Maiden Fish and Chips - although I haven't yet found a chippy in Sheffield that understands what a portion of chips actually is!! "Pisces" In Dinnington. You need a fork-lift truck to get your chippies home from there. They also do a Lunchtime special: Chips, small fish, sausage and peas, £2. Bargain  Mosey 15-09-2005, 08:42 Curry, although fish and chips is cheaper but tastes less healthy. viking 15-09-2005, 08:45 Originally posted by Mosey fish and chips is cheaper but tastes less healthy. Dead Dogs, and rats are REALLY Healthy :gag: harris 15-09-2005, 08:49 Fish and chips from the Broomhill Friary - brilliant. Also good to have battered saus instead, loads of ketchup and mayonaise -yummy! Hungry now! |
