View Full Version : Lathkill Dale Walk Sunday 14th June
Here's a walk that we did in June last year, and we're repeating again at the same time of year this year especially so that we can have a look again at the rare Jacob's Ladder flower which is found in only 15 places in the country, one of which is Lathkilldale. Not only that, it is also a beautiful part of the Peaks, and the walk is one of the most popular ones we've ever done I think.
As usual it is a circular walk, which starts about a mile from the centre of Youlgreave, and as well as going through most of Lathkill Dale, also goes through Monyash, where we can stop for refreshments, and also along part of the Limestone Way. The walk is 9 miles long, but can be shortened to 5.5 miles quite easily if neccesary.
Hopefully to jog a few people's memories from last year, and to encourage people to come this year, can I just say that during last years walk we managed a lovely long lunch stop in hot sunshine under the trees outside the Bulls Head on the village green at Monyash before doing a bit of paddling in the lovely stream which goes through Lathkilldale, and eventually ended up totally chilled outside the other Bulls Head at Youlgrave! Happy days.
The walk will start at 10.30 and the meeting point is the car park on Moor lane, and can be found by taking a right turn just past the Bulls Head in Youlgrave, and then by taking another right turn at a 'T' junction on to Moor Lane itself, and then following it until you reach the car park.
I daren't hardly suggest it in view of cancellations and the godawful weather we've had, but if anybody fancies it, we can plan to have a barbeque again after the walk in the car park cos it's an ideal spot for this. Just state in your posting if you're interested and we'll take it from there.
Once again, if anybody who can offer a lift, and people who need them please say so in their posts so we can work something out.
Now all we need is for it to stop raining!
MissChatter 07-06-2009, 15:53 Hi Scoobz I will not be on this walk due to working was looking foreward to the BBQ as well.
Hi Scoobz I will not be on this walk due to working was looking foreward to the BBQ as well.
Hoping we can try and plan to have a bbq at Carsington again either next month or August, so don't despair!
MissChatter 07-06-2009, 17:03 oooooooo yipeeeee you know i love a BBQ
Me and Rivelin6 will be up for the walk and BBQ. It will be my last walk for a while. We'd be grateful for a lift but not sure where we will be Saturday night yet.

Village Owl 07-06-2009, 18:08 Count me in, for the walk and bbq. Another lovely area with plenty of wonderful scenery.
Hi all
don't know if we are in Sheffield this coming weekend, but if we are I would love to come along on this walk. I recall the brilliant weather that we had last year and hope for the same next Sunday.
sheffsal 07-06-2009, 18:22 is the walk a hard one as id really like to join but fear im not fit enough plus im a very slow wlaker
I thoroughly recommend this walk, specially to anyone who hasnt done it before. Just reading Scoobz' post has brought back lovely memories of doing it last year. :D
Unfortunately I cant join you as I have got parents visiting. Have fun, I will look forward to seeing Taxmans photos as always!

Hi,
From what I can remember last year there was a very steep bit which I personally found difficult - lots of very steep steps, but the rest was beautiful - well worth the struggle. Also, again, if I remember rightly, there were a handful of people who left us part way round & did a shorter walk. Scoobz has said there is a shorter 5.5 mile alternative, which you could try if you thought the longer walk would be too difficult.
Hippiechick3 07-06-2009, 20:54 Hi, I will be along for this one and am looking forward to it. Was weird having to find things to do today, apart from rain dodging that is.
Hippiechick3 07-06-2009, 21:05 I can also offer a lift to Taxman and Rivelin from their secret location. A bit mysterious if you ask me.
See you at Usual place at 9.45. I dont know where Youlgreave is but hopefully 45 mins is enough to get there!
Village Owl 07-06-2009, 21:27 I can also offer a lift to Taxman and Rivelin from their secret location. A bit mysterious if you ask me. See you at Usual place at 9.45. I dont know where Youlgreave is but hopefully 45 mins is enough to get there! Youlgrave is inbetween Bakewell and Matlock Bath, from Bakewell head towards Matlock past Haddon Hall turn right at the junction and then go left over bridge to take road into Youlgrave. Or if you come thru Chatsworth turn left at the junction just before Haddon Hall and then left over bridge. Timewise 20-25 mins further than Eyam, 10 mins further than Bakewell.

Thanks for that
I would allow an hour to get there from Sheffield, and a further 15 minutes to find the car park cos it's not in the easiest place to find! I'll be setting off from North Sheffield at 9.00, and don't mind anybody following me who wants to!
Regarding the difficulty of the walk, personally I wouldn't recommend this walk to a newbie, but if a new person does want to come with a view to dropping out for the shorter route it would be an idea for them to bring an OS map with them to help find their way back.
Welcome back Alligin! If you can make it, your assistance on the day would be greatly appreciated (as always!)
sheffsal 08-06-2009, 09:21 Im not new to walking - have walked to the lost lad from dewent dams up hollins clough n back and most recently higger tor n carl wark, but I am slow n get outta puff up the steep bits but love it when i get to the top
Agent Orange 08-06-2009, 10:10 I would like to come along to this one. If anyone has space then I would be grateful for a lift from city centre.
billysmum 08-06-2009, 16:50 I loved this walk the last time we did it, we had beautiful sunshine. Can I put in a request for sunny weather Scoobz?

Sorry, I wasn't suggesting you were new to walking, just a "newbie" as far as this Group is concerned.
Regarding this walk, as Hemlock says it is a challenging walk, and even though we'll have plenty of stops, there are several steep hills, including one that we all found difficult at the end of the walk last year. And although several people last year intended to leave the walk part way, they didn't do so because they didn't have a map to guide them, and in the end did the full walk. From memory I think it took us about 4 hours to complete the walk not including stops, so you can decide for yourself whether you think this is a fast pace!

Just found out that I've got 2 spare places, so you can have one of them if you want. Petrol station at 9.10 ok?
mrpedantic 08-06-2009, 22:42 I'll be along. Anned has kindly offered me a lift so I'm sorted for transport.
Johnireland 09-06-2009, 12:02 Will be joining you again for this one guys fingers crossed for the weather - got caught in a nice thunder storn in the Rivelin Valley last weekend (too wet to even eat my sandwiches :)) any chance of a lift for sunday ? You can jump in with us if you want. We'll be coming through Sheffield at about 9.10 and can pick you up from outside the Hendersons Relish Factory on Hanover Way (opposite University tram stop) if you can find out where that is (ask a Sheffielder :))

Nice to see you're coming Sunday Anne and also that you'll be at the Quiz show evening - should be a cracking night. We'll be discussing the bbq then I would think. See you there!
cristabell 09-06-2009, 20:37 I won't be along for this one as I'm going to a friend's bbq, but will hopefully see you all again soon for another walk. Fingers crossed you get some sunshine!

Can you be on Hanover Way close to the Hendersons Relish factory for 9.10? We're also picking Johnireland up there, probably in 2 cars.

Hi Scoobz, yep i think what i wrote came across a bit sharp. sorry didnt mean to offend, ill wait for an easier walk that the group may go on, to easy myself in thanks again.
Up to now, the intended bbq for after Sundays walk will definitely take place, with a final decision on this being made and posted on here by lunch-time tomorrow. Can anyone who wants to stay for the bbq and hasn't put their name down already please do so by 2.30 tomorrow afternoon at the latest.
Up to now the definites as far as I can tell are Billysmum, Scoobz, Taxman, Rivelin6, Hippiechick3, Village Owl, Hemlock, Mr Hemlock, Agent Orange, Mrpedantic, Anne d, Johnireland, Cristabell. Zippydedoodah. (5 veggies?)
The barbeque will cost £3 per person for the food etc, but will people bring their own drinks. There is nowhere close by incidentally to obtain drinks.
Can anyone coming by car who has the room please bring as many collapsible chairs with them as possible. I'll try and fit four in somehow and a table, so that's a start!
Fingers crossed for the weather now!
Jayemm - are you having the bbq or did the last one put you off :) ?
Also, will you be on your own?
Village Owl 13-06-2009, 00:25 Scoobz, I beliueve that Zippydedodah said at tonights games night that she's stopping for the bbq as well. If anyone realises on the way there that they've forgotton a drink for the bbq the nearest place to get a drink from shop wise is the petrol garages in Bakewell or the Co-op there though I'm not sure what hours its open on Sundays. Here's hoping for fine weather.
Weather forecast looking good so barbeque definitely on.
Village Owl 13-06-2009, 07:27 Weather forecast looking good so barbeque definitely on. Yipee, should be a great day.

Village Owl 14-06-2009, 18:44 :wow::wow: What a fantastic walk through some great scenery, I can see why everyone who's done it before raves about it. I enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks to Scoobz for leading us round,Billysmum for being middle marker and both Hemlock and Zippydedodah for doing sterling jobs at the back:thumbsup:.
The bbq was a fantasic end to the day, and was spent in the usaul great company. Thanks to all of those who did the cooking Scoobz,Billysmum,Hippiechick3,Johnireland and Cristabelle the food was deliicious:D.
Thanks for the chocolate bar Hippiechick3,it made for a perfect snack on the way home; but you shouldn't have.
Taxman, as I won't see you before you go away have a great time on your trip, and we'll see you on your return.
See you all soon.
That was a brilliant way to say farewell to the group for the next 3 weeks. Terrific scenery and great company and finished with a BBQ.
I echo Village Owl's thanks to all involved in making today such a good day. Well done to Johnireland and cristabell for volunteering to be the meat cooks today despite being newcommers to our merry group.
Cheers to Hippiechick3 for the lift
Thanks for the well wishes Village Owl. I'm off on my jollies to Iceland next week so wont be around for the next few walks nor, sadly, for Scoobz's and Billysmum's big day. I hope everything goes perfectly for you both.
See you all in a month or so :(
Unfortunately the photos from today will not be posted until Tuesday evening due to me, once again, being kidnapped by some strange lovely woman
Hippiechick3 14-06-2009, 19:29 well once again I had a magical day out ended in style with a fab BBQ. I love Lathkill dale and cant wait to go back there. I enjoed a short paddle and a ( shorter) jog for the last mile - what was I thinking in that heat. Thanks everyone for turning up and doing your bit. Big thanks to Scoobz and BM for been our BBQ experts. Nice to meet some new people and have cute puppie come along. See you all soon.
I think that todays walk had everything, especially some decent weather for a change. Some great scenery on the walk with lovely fields, picturesque villages and dramatic dales for us to enjoy. I especially love the river which flows through Lathkilldale too, and the fact that it depends on whether or not it's been raining recently as to whether it's there at all!
Fabulous turnout too with 23 people all told, all of whom stayed on at the end for a car park bbq, which I think was a great success.
Todays attendees were Hippiechick3, Rivelin6, Taxman, Alligin, Neily, Village Owl, Hemlock, Mr Hemlock, Jayemm, Impinabox, Cristabell, Johnireland, Snow Don, Zippydedoodah, Judybongo, Agent Orange, Bambigirl, Lorri, Anne D, Mrpedantic, Cheryl, Billysmum, Scoobz
You've got Neily twice there scoobz ;)
A lovely day walking in a beautiful part of the world, and many thanks to Alligin for the lift, and to those who organised & cooked the BBQ :)
It was great getting to know some of you better on my 4th walk with the group. I'm a bit sunburnt but feel refreshed after a nice warm shower :P
Hope to see you again soon, have a great trip taxman :)
A great walk with geat ppl - although everyone else has said the same. Only 2 things spoilt this for me
1. - got a huge blister on the heel of my foot, so the last couple of miles were agony
2. We forgot to bring any drinks for the BBQ!!!
Anyway, thanks to Scoobz for being a knight in shining armour & picking up the last few stragglers in his car for the last 1/4 mile:thumbsup:
Also thanks to Village owl for sharing his pop:thumbsup:
Now thats what friends are for:D
Thanks to everyone for buying, preparing & cooking the food - all went down a treat.
Lastly - have a great holiday Taxman:thumbsup:
& Rivelin6 - we'll have to make the most of the time Taxman's away & organise that evening we've been promising for weeks:D
billysmum 14-06-2009, 20:30 Lathkilldale has got to be one of my favourite walks, it really is stunning. I enjoyed all of it today, sunshine always helps. Glad you all enjoyed the bbq, I did.
It was great to have Snowdon, Neily and Alligin with us again today

Great photo's Taxman.

Yeah, what an unusual sight it was to see the caravan on it's roof like that, it was as if it was like that on purpose.
