Absolutely stupid, what about all the other nationalities that live in this country, how will they be represented? How many colours can you stick on a flag. What about the flag of St. George?
NO NO.

Seems stupid to me, how does jsut simply putting a black line around it make a difference. Just leave it alone, doesnt make any sense whatsoever.

The flag is perfect. Im really getting fed up of the idea that we need to change things so that people will stop saying that we are racist.

If they do change the flag I will shout out everytime I see it "Im a racist, get used to it" I will never use the new flag even if peple say its politically incorrect. I believe the falg is what we are, there is no need to change it

But the colours don't represent the colours of people, there arn't any blue or red people in the UK, it's just silly.

This is a topic from 2003 - there is no reason, nor will there be a reason. Just a bunch of muppets.

It's a nonsensicle article about a daft idea that one single person had.

Please please please don't take it (even in the remotest way) seriously.

We can now await the nationalist segment of the forum coming along to this thread and ranting about... well the stuff they always rant about, especially political correctness.

If the flag needs changing, it should reflect Wales somehow as they always seem to moan about it :hihi:

"A campaign is being launched to modernise the red, white and blue flag by adding a touch of black to reflect multicultural Britain in the 21st Century."

Oh ? How many red and blue people live in Britain then ? :loopy:

I think it looks great, much better than the one we have at the moment, and I don't see what's intrinsically wrong with changing it, it's been done several times in the past.

I might start a campaign to our national anthem changed to the same as Irelands, we are an Island so it would still make sense when we sang it and it's just a better more rousing tune.

DanSumption

I believe there's already a campaign to change the national anthem to Jerusalem (or at least use it as a separate English national anthem), a song whose sentiments I don't entirely agree with but whose tune is certainly a lot more rousing than the current dirge.

Jerusalem would be good.

I prefer Rule Britannia, it has a far jollier tune.

Could be wrong, but hasn't it only been changed once in the past, to add the Cross of Saint Patrick / Ireland (1801).

Before that it was just the combination of the Cross of Saint Andrew (Scotland) and the Cross of Saint George (England).

Read the reFlag site and it gives you a history of the Union Jack.

To stop all this argument about colours and flags , why don't we have one , where the centrepiece is Mr. ,"Trust me , you guys" Blair , surrounded by a circle of his cabinet ?
That would be democratic . We voted them in and we could keep changing the flag as new governments came and went.
The government could even raise a bit of money to finance its wonderful schemes by selling advertising space in the four corners.

So, apart from it getting a bit longer and thinner (so it fits on wide screen TVs better? ;) ), I wasn't far off then.

:D

I'm tempted to pass comment about patriotism being the last refuge of the scoundrel but I'll keep quiet.

They can change it to a picture of Nadia from BB riding a pig round a greyhound stadium for all I care. It says nothing about who I am, what I stand for and it therefore irrelevant to me.

Storm in a teacup anyone? :D

You are quite wrong swan-vesta

It matters a lot

Just think of all those skin heads who might have to have their tattoos re-done!

(If I decide to launch a campaign to ban Yorkshire puddings because they discriminate against Lancastrians, can I rely on someone posting a thread all about it as though it might actually be going to happen? Thought so)

The Union Flag is such a horrible, awkward design anyway, I hope they do change it. Hope there's not a democratic vote over a new design though - can you imagine our country being symbolised by the crazy frog?

I think the point is national flags are not sacred gifts from god, they were designed and as such are quite often redesigned, Iraq and Sardinia for example or changed entirely South Africa, Russia and Iraq again for example (although the post Saddam redesign was scrapped)

Isn't a flag supposed to say something about a country/nation? Something unique to that country?

Okay....all those in favour of a Burberry flag.....

Symbols are very powerful; mess with them at your peril.

This is a stupidly tokenistic approach which will please very few people, annoy and irritate more and anger a few folks as well.

Leave it alone.

Sshhh Fareast.....or you'll have t020 enthusiastically taking up this idea. He's all in favour of advertising on postage stamps already. Don't encourage him! :hihi:

Oh, and let's leave the union jack alone. A really daft idea. But I'd support changing the national anthem.
