View Full Version : Would like help to locate this place in Derbyshire.
Back in the 80s I visited a place in Derbyshire with my late partner and have been trying to find this place on the net etc but no joy. My description is quite vague but someone might be able to help. here goes.
You started off at a pub of which the back terrace laid adjacent to a river/canal.
The seating in the pub terrace went all along a kind of tow path.
At the other side of the canal/river was a sort of big park thing with some animals and long narrow country paths. and a duck pond i think.
further up you were left with a long river with banking at either side with trout fishing by permit only i think.
I dont think it was a country park as it wasnt big enough.
any ideas anyone.?

More precisely, between Chapel-en-le-Frith and New Mills.
tara - do you have any additional details? Can you remember how you got there, e.g., travelling through certain towns? Did you go by train, bus or car? What was your starting point of the journey? Sheffield or somewhere else?
What animals were in this big park? Deer?
Any clues about the name of the pub?
I have an extensive knowledge of Derbyshire, but none of what you describe sounds familiar.
There are only 7 canals in Derbyshire (Cromford, Chesterfield, Erewash, Peak Forest, Trent & Mersey, Derby & The Nutbrook).
The Nutbrook & Derby canals are closed and little remains. The majority of the Cromford and the Chesterfield canals are only partially open. The Erewash and Trent & Mersey canals are in the south of the county, and the Peak Forest canal is in the north-west of the county. I am familiar with all of them, but your description of the pub with a park nearby, plus trout fishing permits doesn't ring bells. Do you recall seeing any boats on the waterway? Or locks? Waterway pubs tend to occur at locks.
If you can answer these questions, and hopefully recall any other details, this would be helpful.
I'm suggesting that I first narrow your search to these three Derbyshire canals, but if we then eliminate them, we can concentrate on the Derbyshire rivers.

Hi there Redrobbo and all.
I think ive had a breakthrough. I thought of this pub after searching before but didnt recognise the picture, for the simple reason theres two with the same name not all that far from each other. I must have traced the name of one and looked at the picture of the other, thats why it didnt seem to fit.
Its the Navigation Inn on Brookside, Buxworth aka(Bugsworth) and as you may know the Bugsworth Basin was closed and was reopened this easter.
There is another Navigation Inn on Johnson street Whaley Bridge.
Found out there is a station not too far away.
As before, i travelled by car.
thanks so much for helping with suggestions.

redrobbo 12-07-2005, 00:05 Really pleased you have solved your mystery tara. If you google Bugsworth basin, you will find some lovely photos and interesting stories about the canal restoration and Buxworth village.
Bugsworth was the original name of the village, and despite the proximity of Buxton, the villagers changed the name to Buxworth in a referendum in 1929. 70 years later, another referendum was held to change the name back to Bugsworth - but the majority of the villagers wanted to stick with Buxworth.
And thus it remains Buxworth (but Bugsworth basin!).
Bugsworth basin was once the largest inland port in England, and is a scheduled ancient monument. Benjamin Outram, of Ripley, Derbyshire, constructed the canal.
The village lies in the parish of Chinley. The Navigation Inn, at Bugsworth basin, is the starting point of the Eccles Pike Fell Race. Eccles Pike is a local hill, with grand views over Combs valley and reservoir, and towards New Mills viaduct.
The Eccles Pike Fell Race is reputably one of the oldest fell races in the country, dating back to the beginning of the century. Revived in recent years, it is renowned for being short, tough and demanding. This year it starts on Wed Aug 17, at 7.30pm, from the Navigation Inn, Bugsworth basin.
I hope you will soon be able to return to Buxworth, and enjoy some happy memories tara.
Best wishes

Pat Phoenix (Elsie Tanner) of Coronation Street used to own the Navigation Inn at Whaley Bridge.
