my gf is having a weekend away in york with one of her friends as part of her birthday celebration.. can anyone recommend a hotel for them? ideally close to the city/action, but not so close that they have to put up with traffic and noise from drunken idiots..

they will be staying friday august 12th - sunday 14th inclusive..

any help appreciated..

thanks..

I'v stayed at a place called The Alhambra Court. Its on a road called St Marys, 5 mins walk from city centre. It was nice & quiet & very reasonable considering its so near the centre

We stayed at a Premier Lodge last time, just off Micklegate / Blossom St. There is parking, its a few mins of the Micklegate run and I think that it was only 50/55 per night (cheap by York standards).

Near to the train station too, if they are getting the train...

Novotel do some reasonable packages from time to time.

Modern, decent hotel with swimming pool. Five mins walk from centre.

yeah, that's where she wanted to stay (her mum works at the one here, up by high green/J35, so can get discount), but they're fully booked that weekend :(

she's now booked into a travel lodge, somewhere near the town centre (above a wetherspoons, apparently).. anyone have any experience of it?

We stayed at The "Minster" hotel In March.
It is only a 5 minute walk to the city centre.
The hotel has a "Brasseirie" downstairs too.
A mini bar in the room along with a safe deposit box adds the finishing touches, along with the maid, who comes to the room in an evening to "Turn" the bed.

The breakfast menu is brill. You can have "Rib eye" steak if you like along with mackrel and kippers or a full English.

Down side is : It comes at a price, £155 per night for a double room.

York is a quaker town so the locals don't really tolerate drunken behaviour!!

There is only a couple of nightclubs which only open at weekends and they are not up to much either!!

The doors of pubs are generally 'locked' at last orders (but NOT a lock in) - if you are not in the pub when last orders are called you basically don't get in!!

So don't leave it too late if wanting to move on to another pub....as you could end up missing last orders altogether!!

Nice place though....don't let this put you off!!

It is great for shopping so girlies will probably enjoy it more than the men!!

I've stayed in quite a number of hotels and B & Bs in York and it usually depends whether I'm taking the car which one I choose.

In August, for the third time I'm stopping at Novotel, on the A19 a stone's throw from Clifford's Tower. It has its own parking, restaurant, bars and swimming pool. Ideal for a young family like mine, it's incredibly handy for my next visit as I'm running in The Millennium Bridge 5k which begins in St. George's Field which is practically next door. Our room costs £121.

A cheaper alternative, again with its own parking (and with a much more personal touch) is a B & B in St. Mary's, best approached via the A1237 and A19 - follow the signs for North York. Called Treetops, I've stayed here twice and is again in a fine location yet down a quiet street.

Phone them on 01904 658053. Their B & B is exactly 60 miles from my home. My wife and I stayed there last Christmas, the second time we have done so. We'll definitely do so again.

Other places worth checking out are the Monk Bar Hotel and even the Punch Bowl Inn, Micklegate. The Exhibition pub on Bootham does accommodation also. Travelodge on Piccadily is handy also.

If you want any further details regarding this fine city, PM me and I'll be more than willing to help.

I've stayed here just the once, although that was before the Wetherspoon's pub opened on the premises (which I believe has a late licence at weekends).

It - like most Travelodges - did 'exactly what it says on the tin'. It's okay, nothing more, nothing less. However, it is in a fine location very near to Clifford's Tower, York Museum, York Dungeon and the River Ouse.

It is at the opposite end to the Minster and Railway Station (but nothing is far away in York, both are a fifteen to twenty minute walk away).

Best route, if you're driving is to take the M18/M62 to Howden and then take the A63 to the A19 north of Selby. Driving through Fulford you'll see the hotel shortly after your first sighting of the Walls, on your right. You have to go round the roundabout to get onto Piccadilly.

The breakfast was rather bland last time I went, but I haven't as yet woken up in York without a hangover, so that may have something to do with it!

I once used an hotel that is next to the station, I forget it's name but I checked it out before hand to see if it was suitable and it looked fine. Upon arriving there several weeks later, they were in the middle of renovations and the place was like a building site. Dust was everywhere, including in the vicinity of food. Obviously this is unlikely to be a problem now, but I'd never ever use that hotel ever again. They obviously didn't give a damn about guests.

I have stayed in the hotel opposite the one above the weatherspoons place, has this one already been suggested? sorry if it has, its just I can't remember the name! I have also stayed in the Barr Convent in York, it's very peaceful and simple but more of a place to relax and reflect than party I think!
