View Full Version : Are Man U fans still crying?
raskalnikov 04-06-2009, 11:35 I was just in the process of re-watching Man United being repeatedly pummelled into submission by a far superior Barcelona side, and wondering if anyone was prepared to change Ronaldo's nappy. Also it occurs to me that premiership is only a powerful league if the vast majority of its talent is imported, which probably answers the question of why the England national side repeatedly fail!

As they won the league, I think they are probably doing OK.

Actually he missed the nail completely, United fans on the whole are very happy to have finished the season Champions of England and the World (and holders of the league cup) when you've got all that missing out on being European Champions again really isn't so bad.

Lets face it, winning the domestic league is the main point of playing all those games during the season. Cups and trophies are icing on the cake. I'm betting, and would wager a considerable amount, that every other team, their fans and their managers would have wanted to be champions of their domestic league.
Thats why Rafa had his rage, why Chelski sacked their manager, why there are questions about Wenger.
raskalnikov 19-06-2009, 18:47 I always say there's nothing like a good gloat, and here's why, in the late seventies a gentleman named Brian Clough took a meagre unheard of Nottingham Forest side from Division 3 obscurity, to the pinnacle of European and domestic football. He unlike Sir smug chops, had little in the way of finances and a club with a none existent fan base! My point being this, the achievements of Mr Clough RIP, are never to be repeated and far outweigh the achievements of Fergie, because thanks to clubs of the ilk of United money talks and little else. This ultimately means that most players such as Ronaldo, however talented, are all journeyman and answer only to greed! The other consequence being the the Premiership is Ultimately boring; since its inception the premier league, however entertaining, has yielded only four winners Man Utd, Arsenal, Blackburn Rovers, and Chelsea, only two of which truly deserve any credit, namely Blackburn Rovers and Arsenal, Blackburn for obvious reasons given the clubs size, and Arsenal for having a youth policy which still yield's huge talent, while rarely spending exorbitant amount's on prima dona's who take three games rest due to a dead leg.
The fact is, despite all the cries of foul Ref, the premier league isn't half the league it pertains to be, because the true soul football which existed in the heart of Mr Clough is dead, and has been replaced, even while many lose there income due to recession, by the Euro and Pound signs which flash in the players eyes. Honestly we are all adults and hopefully intelligent enough to answer the following question? If you were, say a central European footballer and were offered a contract with a team in the premier league which meant three years of your life spent in sunny Manchester, or alternatively three years in Naples for slightly less wages which would you pick? Most no doubt will plump for greed, and play for some money bags club in the rain, while being pestered by the ever cruel British media; the problem is that while ever people choose this course football as a whole will lose out and eventually burn itself out, as happened in Serie A, which is now at least becoming a much better league because of at's involuntary course of weeding out the pearl from the swine so to speak. I think perhaps the truth is that teams like Man Utd or even Chelsea are guilty of making football amoral, and greedy, and don't deserve there titles and cups, since these HONORS were bought and not earned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wasn't Forest in the second division when Clough took over? (Now the Championship?)
Also, didn't Forest and Clough smash the British transfer record with the first £1 million domestic transfer involving Trevor Francis? Previously it was around the half a million mark.

At Aberdeen Ferguson was the first manager for 15 years to break the Rangers and Celtic stranglehold on the Scottish league in 1980 something no one has managed since. He went on to win the Scottish League a further two times and also won the European Cup Winners Cup and UEFA Supercup with them.
At United Ferguson has done something Clough couldn't which is sustain success winning trophy after trophy and building great team after great team.

Because of course United have never won anything with kids and Blackburn in no way bought the title with Jack Walker's money :loopy:

Take a look at the transfer league (http://www.transferleague.co.uk/) and you'll see that plenty of sides such as Tottenham, Liverpool, City... have spent pretty much the same as United. Others such as Newcastle and Villa are pretty damn close. United have been the dominant Premiership side not because Ferguson has far outspent his rivals but because he has spent similar (and in Chelsea's case lesser) amounts of cash better.
raskalnikov 20-06-2009, 16:46 The fact is as usual Fergie has been at a distinct advantage ever since taking control at Man Utd, an advantage which Mr Clough never enjoyed at Forest! a massive fan base and pots of cash, Trevor Francis was the one major signing Clough ever made, and when Forest won the European Cup the rest of the team cost tuppence! Blackburn Rovers if I remember were hardly the Galacticos thanks to Mr Walker?
O.K I'll cut to the quick I'm hardly the worlds number one Man Utd fan, in fact some of my favourite memories have been watching Fergie gradually chameleon like move through a host of colours until eventually arriving at red while his overrated side are bested. To be honest these memories are given extra colour and vibrancy by Jose Mourinho during his time at both Porto and Chelsea, and though I may on occasion criticize the Blues, at least for a short time we were blessed with a modicum of charisma, talent and variety, until that is, Abramovich spat out the proverbial dummy and left his Chelsea in the dust!

Just because he didn't break the transfer record again that doesn't mean he didn't make any more big signings which he did. Clough was a great manager however unlike Ferguson he couldn't sustain success and unlike Ferguson Clough was only ever successful when working with Peter Taylor, Ferguson has had success with all manner of assistant coaches.
Before Ferguson took over United hadn't won the league for 19 years, under him they've won it 11 times in 23 years. He is the most successful manager ever in the history of English football and as I demonstrated in my previous post did it with parity in spending power with numerous rivals.
Also good job ignoring Ferguson's achievements at Aberdeen.

Your memory leaves much to be desired:
Rovers made headlines in the summer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackburn_Rovers#1990s:_The_Jack_Walker_revolution ) of 1992 by paying an English record fee of £3.5million for the 22-year-old Southampton and England centre forward Alan Shearer. Other expensive signings during the 1992-93 season included Chelsea defender Graeme Le Saux, Middlesbrough winger Stuart Ripley and Coventry striker Kevin Gallacher. An impressive Blackburn side remained in the title challenge for most of the season before finishing fourth in the final table, that season not quite enough for UEFA Cup place. Leeds midfielder David Batty and Southampton goalkeeper Tim Flowers were two key signings who helped Blackburn progress in 1993-94 and finish Premiership runners-up to arch rivals Manchester United. Rovers broke the English transfer fee record again a few weeks later when paying Norwich City £5million for 21-year-old striker Chris Sutton. Sutton's prolific striking partnership with Alan Shearer would be dubbed the "SAS", an acronym for "Sutton and Shearer" and the elite British special forces unit the SAS. Blackburn Rovers scored the 1000th goal in Premier League history. Mike Newell was on target in April 1993 in a 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest.
Walker bought the premiership when you could do it with tens rather than hundreds of millions but he still bought it. In the premiership seasons leading up to Blackburn winning the title Blackburn's net spend was £14,870,000
in contrast United's was -£765,000.
O.K I'll cut to the quick I'm hardly the worlds number one Man Utd fan, in fact some of my favourite memories have been watching Fergie gradually chameleon like move through a host of colours until eventually arriving at red while his overrated side are bested. Yet again your memory leaves much to be desired which I suppose is only to be expected in ABUs who have much to try and forget. Mourinho left after Ferguson had built yet another great side and beat Mourinho's Chelsea to the title in 2007.
Incidentally do you really not see the astonishing hypocrisy in you damning Ferguson for supposedly buying all his success at United yet praising Mourinho at Chelsea?

Clough also paid over £1 million for Justin Fashanu, the first £1 million black player in 1981. He spent big during his first years at forest.
