Which is your favourite?

For a good Cheap one - I like Indiana on London Rd
Bit more up market - Mohul at Totley is good

The trouble is with Indian Resturants is that I find them a bit inconsistant. Sometimes they are great other times they are not so good from the same place....can't understand it.

We go to Hakims on London Road, eat in or takeaway. The prices are okay, but they are inconsistent sometimes... but then, so are most places (they must have different staff on weekends to week days?) - our local chippy has good days and bad, but it always seems like we choose the bad days!

is by far the best. It consistently gets mentioned in the sunday broadsheets as well, as the way Indian restaraunts should be run.

Make sure you take Nirmal's advice.

butlers balti house (broad lane) and jaflong (crookes) are the best i've been to.

If you like your curry super special and are not bothered about the surroundings, Mangla on Spital Hill is the best in Sheffield by far. Excellent cooking, top ingredients and an open kitchen.

The tables etc are old fashioned formica topped and its very much like a shop takeaway in the front part but ignore that side and give it a go. You wont be disappointed.

p.s. the prices are good too.

Mangla any day. They deliver too. This is your real Indian food, not something made out of tomato soup from the Indiana.

Yes, the Kashmir is still very much open (although no longer on Sunday nights) and unbeatable for quality and value IMHO, on the value front not least cos you bring your own booze (e.g. Timmy T's Landlord in a 4 pint jug from the marvellous pub over the road)

Been to Nirmals and Vijays (Nirmals bleeding loads of times). They are both very good, but Nirmals is a tad pricey.

The Kashmir, for my money. I find the Boston Strangler (Mangla) a tad too hot, not that I don't like hot food, but not every dish.

I was very suprised by Vijays, I went there on a work do and was dreading a plate of slop as it's a town i.e after a skin full type place..full marks

I agree with the majority that Nirmals is the best Indian food in Sheffield. You get what you pay for!!

I know it's not a conventional restaurant but any curry lovers visiting Meadowhall should try the Shere Khan Express.
The cuisine is tasty and authentic. It's an offshoot of the successful Shere Khan restaurant in Manchester.
I wish they would open one up in Sheffield too.:)

How else do you afford to run a restaurant on Glossop Road AND drive an S-Class

I would also give Gulshan Balti House on The Wicker a go, decent food and priced well.

Thing about sheffield is, unlike Wilmslow Road in Manchester you just have to pick the best of a bad bunch. Anybody who had been to any of the number of established restaurants in Manchester will know what I mean. They have it down to a fine art in getting their cuisine 110% every time, and if not you will always get it replaced for free without questions.

I've not had a curry for ages and ages and was just reading the "curry help" thread....

So what do you think is the best curry restaurant, and which is the best takeaway?

slh73
11-01-2004, 17:38
best restaurant: Id say the Bombay (just off west street). Never had a bad meal there. And takeaway, I like Rasheeds (manor top).

Ah cheers for that, didn't see it - I searched on curry rather than Indian - prolly best to delete this thread mods!

I always avoid calling them Indian restaurants because I believe (correct me if I'm wrong here) that a large proportion of them are actually Bangladeshi ?

When I went to Nirmals with some friends Nirmal was really pushy trying to sell us more and more food. We hadn't gone to eat loads, we just wanted a normal sized meal. We were asked if we wanted coffee 4 times! The answer was no btw. She did manage to palm off some mangoes though. I wont be going again, all this made the atmosphere quite oppressive.

You knew it had to come up at some point didn’t you! Well . . in your honest opinion, where is THE best curry sold? Loads of people I know in Sheffield always rate Mangla on Spital Hill. I’ve been there a few times myself and must admit the taste of lamb bhuna & chicken tikka with pilau rice is impressive. It’s an open kitchen so you can actually see them cooking it fresh. Making me mouth water already!

Well, I still think you can't beat the Kashmir on Spital Hill for value and you can get your beer over the road(East House)
Had a great balti in Butlers Balti on Broad Lane the other night-loads of veggie options too.
Anyone know if it is true that it used to be a famous tea rooms called Butlers that once hosted a famous artist such as Picasso or Dali? One of the older members of our curry party wasn't sure who?

Your all wrong! (apart from the person that said the Mangla). Thats by far the best Indian Restaurant in Sheffield.

Nirmals is a rip off where they charge you extra and always rush you. The broadsheet thing was back in the 80's when it was by far the best.

If you want expensive but very tasty try the Ashoka on Eccy road. the owner has a very impressive gut.

You have to go somewhere else, anywhere, no matter how bad because this IS the worse curry house in Sheffield. Been once only (and not through choice , someone elses) and i will never go again. It is a place for students who have never tasted curry before and want to try something not too different. It is not even worth it when they put the adverts out that they are doing 2 - 4 - 1 offer. Absolutely gross.

And they own Millenium across the road, which is just a bad. Some of that food in the window looks like it has been there forever. And did it not get closed down not long after it opened????? (i think they did balti king too???)

I agree, very impressive food. The Ambar further up the road toward the Banner Cross is also quite good.

Mangla is also a winner for me!

Try the New India Garden on Chesterfield Road Heeley. Always had a good meal in there. Very nice staff and they have at least one high chair. (Try panneer dishes)

For a meal after a night out The Bombay just off West Street is very very reasonable and more than edible Mr Khan (owner) also has Khans on West Street if you want to pay more. Staff often interchange between two resturants. (Try spinich dishes)

MumphitMan
14-04-2004, 18:24
Oh yeah,

I tried Balti King twice. Not too good first time, second made me ill! Some time ago now but you won't catch me in there nor the millenium! Avoid at all reasonable costs!

Restaurants:

JAFLONG - Northfield Rd - dare I say by far the best in Sheff
BUTLERS BALTI HOUSE - Brook Hill / Jessops - a close 2nd

Takeways:

JAFLONG
BILASH - Sharrowvale Rd
MANZIL - Broomhill, nr old KFC

Avoid:

Balti King - Broomhill

Overrated:

Shapla, Nirmals, Kashmir

I think the Indian Chef on Crookes is actully better than the Jaflong recently.

Manzil is good for a take away though.

Butlers is on Broad Lane, near the uni roundabout, opposite the old Jessops. It was good but i haven't been for a while. Beer in the Red Deer before hand a good idea too.

Is that the one next to the 80s bar?

I have a lovely lamb saag in there a few years back, which has never been bettered.

Although, I did fall asleep in the toilets so I'm not sure if it was all a dream...

Everest was dire the last time I went.
I went to Deli Junction last week and that has gone downhill a bit too, though the prices have stayed very high.

I think Induz in Attercliffe and Nirmals on Glossop Road are the best.

Always enjoy an Everest.
Got to say i have genuinly found their staff to be amongst the most helpfull and freindly of any restuarant i've been in.

Though like anywhere i suspect they lose patience with people who've had 20 pints fall asleep whilst their mates balance popadoms on their heads. But then i think we all would.:)

Both reasonably priced and good food.

The Seven Spices at West Bar is good.

The new one opposite Netto in Walkley looks a bit poor from the outsde, but the food is good.

The best curry house? Couldn't tell you, I've not been to them all.

My favourite is the 7 Spices at West Bar, always friendly, food always tastes and smells fresh...a bit more expensive than other places but it's always good quality.

Took a friend there who had been out of the country for a while and my father (the guy who introduced me to curries in the first place) and they both proclaimed the meal to be the best curry either of them had eaten in years.

There is a FANTASTIC new restaurant in sheffield that offers an indian buffet - the food is very good quality and not a bad rpice. There is a restaurant upstairs and bar downstairs. The decor is modern but not unfriendly and its a nice place to chill - but the main thing is the lovely food!

Its Cha Chas on devonshire green (next to where Mad Greeks used to be)

Haven't read every reply to this but Kebabish on the Wicker is consistently good. Yes it's just a quick serve cafe but the food is good and cheap. Also Zaika/Zilka behind the back of Banners building in Attercliffe is fab. Dahl and breads superb. Again cafe style & only open until 8pm.

It'd have to be the Kashmir on Spital Hill for me too.
Brilliant and affordable food and the owner is so funny. It looks pretty rubbish from outside, but I'd rather have good food and no pretentious table clothes.

Wouldnt call Thai food "curry" but its "foreign" I suppose... anyway....

Baan Thai is good for a night out - teh food is good and you get a sense of occasion as the restuarant is quite large with lots of trimmings

Food wise - I think the Inter Siam further up London rd is better - but not so plush a resturant

The Clay Oven on Oakbrook Road. It's a bit tucked away but walking distance for me and never disappointing with delightful service. I'd also have to agree with those who said the Mangla, Kahsmir and Elinas. Ashoka is OK but a bit on the expensive side. I love curry!!!

happyhippy
15-01-2006, 20:40
Mangla is the best tasting in my opinion, but I'm not a fan of Spital Hill; for the middle class set going for a meal I have never had a bad curry in Ayesha's on Ecclesall Road, but the portions are small and expensive, but I have to say b****y tasty ........ but my personal favourite for value and taste, is still the Gulshan on the Wicker (especially for after away matches!!). Cheap, cheerful, no bar so a lot less rowdy, the local Bengali and Pakistani community use it a lot, plentiful food and well done. Surroundings are a little, basic, but who cares? It's the food you want.

Admittedly not been down there for ages .........

Got to be either the Induz on Attercliffe common or the Mangala on Spital hill. All the others I've tried (and that's quite a lot)range from reasonable to crap in terms of quality and prices.
Never had a bad one from the two named above.

what happened to the Balti Hut that used to be at Hunters Bar - we went on holiday and it disappeared while we were away - it was there about 5 years ago. the guy who ran it was called Zaf and it was a BYO - it was brilliant. Someone out there must know where it went!!!!

The most important thing to take onboard here is NEVER, NEVER EVER eat at The Balti King unless you enjoy being bed ridden for a week with serious food poisoning. They also run the Millennium Take Away in Broomhill, which serves to dispose of left overs from the Balti King- hence the suspiciously cheap prices. I once ordered a chicken Kebab which was actually some random chicken curry in a nan bread- it actually had bits of spinach etc in it!!? They have also had a number of warnings from Enviro Health for mice crap in the kitchens.
Prob no mice crap in the Balti Kng kitchens as they seem to torch the place periodically....

Just wanted to advise people that last night we had food from Rasheeds at Manor Top. This wasn't just the worst Indian food but the worst take away EVER. I am not usually in the habit of leaving food when we go to the expense of buying in, and my husband NEVER leaves food on his plate, but last night we both left the food it was SO awful. I can't even begin to describe what we were eating. The chicken Tikka Masala looked like it had had a fight with a bottle of red food colouring and lost. The mushoom rice had what we can only think of as tinned mushrooms in they had no taste at all and the texture well *?!. The onion bahji's were undescribable, the nan was burnt. I would be interested to see what other peoples views on this place are (if you have dared to try it). In future we will be sticking to the Little India at Gleadless Town End.

My two pen'th:

Mangla = good'n'cheap with the added interest of getting your drinks from over the road

Nirmals = good'n'expensive (try the parsnip curry you'll be surprised)

New India Garden = very good'n'surprisingly good value with some more unusual (less common) dishes and curryntly (see what I did there?) my favorite.

Let's play the Resurrect An Old Thread Game :)

I need a good Indian restaurant for a birthday meal for my Dad, so nothing too lairy, and I might struggle to get him into town to somewhere like the Bombay Duck (sorry, Café Guru ;))

The default choice is The Delhi Junction for good reason but it's a year or so since I've been so what's like these days? Is there anywhere else that's reared its head recently that might make a change?

My friend swears by Jaflong, i intend to try it out with him one of the days. Me ahnd him used to love the mangla. My self think that a number of places have court up on price and its variable quality and some time stupid hot food is not the VFM bargin it once was.

The last meal i had there was poor.

Is the gulshan any good? might try that.

But at the moment my local Momtaz is brill. As cheap as the mangla but very nice food. Beats the spots of the NEW india garden , and everest.

So does the Indian Chef definately have a 'bring your own' licence? That would be cool for making a meal out a little more 'budget'.

Also, I had heard that Royal Spice in Walkley does this too, can anyone confirm that?

I have exactly the same meal at every Indian i go to (im a fussy eater, have found something i like, so ill stick with it!)....
couple of popadoms first, then a seekh kebab starter, chicken tikka main course (chicken tikka pieces - i.e a dry meal, cooked in the clay oven - NOT a curry!), with pilau rice and garlic naan.
have sampled this same meal in quite a few indians in sheff, on several occasions in each restaurant, heres my top 3 -

1. Sahibs (west street) - Excellent service, gorgeous food + decent portions, reasonable price.
2. Akhbars - Poor service both times i went (felt like we were being rushed, and the waiters got order wrong both times), but very very nice food and reasonably priced, great atmosphere in there too.
3. Aagraas (or however you spell it!) - Good service, nice food, just very poor on portions! priced about the same as Akhbars but half as much food. very nice atmosphere in there though.

Had a terrible experience at Butler's, Broad Lane, last Friday night. Staff dumped us for a drink in the downstairs room, saying it would be 5 mins for a table, then left us there for over an hour. We chatted away, forgot about the time, then realised, complained and then argued for ages about whether what we were saying was true. It's no way to treat customers. Suffice to say, we didn't tip and I'll certainly never go back there.

Agree that aagraah is really great, the service is amazing.
however disagree that the portions are poor - the portion sizes may not be huge but you get far more meat then you do in most curries - instead of having a sauce with a few chunks of meat in you have it crammed full of the stuff. excellent. beautiful flavours as well, definitely the best indian meal i've ever had.

has anybody been to the indian buffet up from akbars

Yep - It's called Apnas I believe. Been twice and there isn't a mega huge choice but they look after you.. The 8 or 9 main dishes tho are spot on. I've eaten in nearly all of Sheffield's curry houses and these are good. The Lamb on the bone dish is stunning.

As for Akbars...it's ok and that's it. I think it survives through it's marketing.

The worst for me was Nirmals because of the rip off prices, service and crap attitude. Stay away!!!

Mangla, Cafe Gura are two of the best I find though. Its all down to personal taste with curry though. I absolutely loved The Bombay that was on Westfield Terrace just off West St (where cafe guru is now). It got absolutely hammered in The Star review but we had a great time there.

We once spent 4 nights in a row in The Bombay. Miss that place.

My views: -

Akbars - Very nice, but slightly too expensive for me, and can't really get on with the decor, a tad too dark (last time i was there about a year ago)

Aagrah - Only been once, and on a buffet night, but it was excellent. Probably my favourite for a buffet night.

Zeenat - About on par with Aagrah, but the Buffet night has lost its appeal for me now that they server 'on-the-bone' dishes.

Curry Canteen - Can't go wrong, amazing value for whats really tasty food. Pity i can't get there before closing most of the time though.

Chaman - My new favourite. I use to be a regular at the 'Old-Gulshan', and the owners/chef have moved a winning formula to Chaman. The food is very good. I went to pick up a takeaway on Saturday and although they were extremely busy, they were very friendly, and it was a pleasure to watch them cooking in the open kitchen.

I went to Bangla Cottage in Hillsborough on Friday night, think it's on Langsett road? Anyway I won't be going back there again.
You know how when you walk into a good curry house/restaurant you can smell all the spices and aroma off curry whifting about well there was none of this. Also no indian music playing, so basically it had no atmosphere at all, very disappointing. We got lead to our table which was totally wonky! The food itself wasn't up to much, starters a bit salty. Oh and the place it's self was freezing!
I had heard a few good reviews about this place too, so maybe I caught them on an "off" night? But still it was pretty poor so I doubt I'll head back or reccommend it to anyone.

Not the cheapest Indian restaurant in Sheffield, but still good value for money. We had pickles and poppadoms, shared a mixed Tikka starter with my partner. Had two lunches from curry canteen this week and was very , very good each time , delicious and extremely good value.
We fancy curry tonight (Sat) - where can I get such a good authentic curry (takeaway) which isnt going to break the bank? (Dont think curry canteen is doing week-ends anymore?)

Normally go to Paprikas in Fulwood as so close but honestly , every curry seems pretty much the same and isnt very inspiring.
Tried Almas in Dore last week and was tasty but very oily/ salty and quite expensive.
Ranmoor tandoori and Panahars are both v poor quality serving up spiced meat stews (one imagines one huge pot of curry bubbling in the back of the kitchens from which forms the basis of every dish) and wouldnt last five minutes anywhere else in town.

Thinking maybe to make a trip to Mangla but the last time we had to wait ages for it to be ready.

Hi Skinner ,although you are right that we are closed at the weekends,we are however actually preparing food for a private party tonight,if you like ,you would be more than welcome to come and pick up some food if you wish.
Although as we have allready started cooking i wouldnt be able to manage more than 3/4 portions...let me know if you would like some.

Tried getting food from Curry Canteen, phoned them to make sure they were open, got there (after 10 mile drive) and there was no food left bar a veggie curry. So not yet managed to tast their food.
Went back to Mangla - had my first tasty dish there !! Yipee! The Jalfrezi whilst unlike any previous Jalfrezi I have had was very tasty albeit mild. I did enjoy. The wifes curry (Rogan Josh) was pretty flavourless and my Lamb Tikka starter was pretty disappointing (maybe just a bad batch). The Prawn Puri was strange - a pasanda sauce.
Would go back for the Jalfrezi though!

Come on Fishpintail you must surely work there or own the place?? It is rank to say the least, the very worst type of curry house imaginable. I have eaten curries all over the UK and all over India (although completely different to english curry) and Balti King is the only place I have ever had one that made me ill, and I had to force it down because it was so poor.

I have been going to Balti King at Broomhill for years, and cannot speak highly enough of it.

The service is second to none and the food is excellent, not bad pricing either.

Wide range of dishes...huge menu.

I'd highly recommend a trip for anyone to try it.

I presume your taking the mick? See other "balti king worst curry house ever" thread.
Their food looks like a scientific experiment.

Aagrah in Leopold Square is really good, went a couple of weeks ago. Great menu with loads of choice, everything you expect to find and a good choice of specialities as well. Really nicely done out restaurant, nice enough for a special occasion rather than a general curry. Great service too, quicker than expected for somewhere so busy.

ayeshas on ecclesall road is always a winner for both take away and restaurant eating. But the top of the class is Aagrah, bit more expensive but worth the money. Top class service and any dish off the extensive menu is first class.

Went to shapla on tuesday night our starters were great but the main curries were awful!

Er, as a person who's lived in India for over a decade, I have to say I have yet to find genuine-tasting Indian food in Sheff. However, Saffron Club and Cafe Guru are lovely, and if you are "Indian-looking", the food is actually nicer! An unexpected discovery :)

Best "Indian"restaurant in town is East-West cafe, on Abbeydale Rd - cheap, varied and genuinely authentic. All the others are likely Bangladeshi or Pakistani eg. Mangla & Kashmir.

A few people at work recommended Agrah's to me, so we took curry club* there one night. I wasn't that impressed, to be honest.

What's the general consensus / most-popular curry house so far?

I used to live in Chesterfield town centre, and there's a lovely place opposite the pomegranate theatre called Indian Blues, which is excellent. Prob one of the best curry houses I've been to.

P.S. I shouldn't have even told you about our curry club; 1st rule of curry club is "don't talk about curry club". Bugger!

All the best Indian restaurants are run by Bangladeshis.

They were the first wave of immigrants to open up curry restaurants and the ones we base our English love of curry on. Out with this "contemporary Indian" nonsense and rubbish restaurants opened by English born of Pakistani parents!

Nothing beats a good Bangladeshi curry house

Indeed, but there is a new wave of immigrants from the sub-continent and they bring with them subtle variations of what we call curry. It's impossible to compare south-Indian with Bangladeshi curries as they're totally different but I've never had a curry in Sheffield as tasty as East West cafe.
If you've never had a masala dosa and like curry you really don't know what you're missing. Curried veg rather than veg in a curry sauce. Mmmmmmm.....

Very true, the south indian and sri lankan dishes are totally different to the bangladeshi style.
But the bangladeshi style beats the pakistani curries hands down everytime. I cant find a pakistani that could dispute that either :D
Having said that , pakistanis are masters of the chicken tikka and the good old kebabish mixed grill.

Try it , i think youll like it.
Although there is not much chicken in the chicken curry, having said that it is a couple of pieces on the bone. If you like your chicken on the bone its ok.
The curry is VERY spicy even for an asian ;)

We tried East & West when it first opened and didnt really know what to order as it was out first time eating South Indian Food.
We did ask the advice of the guy who answered the phone but I am not sure he really understood what I was asking.
We ended up choosing some Dosas but it felt like we didnt really get a complete meal.
Think they have added more choices to the menu now so even more at sea.

I really enjoyed the food though and want to give them another try.

What would you recommend ordering to get a complete meal with plenty of variety?
Enough for two people (plus leftovers...)
Vegetarian preferred.

Last week we had the Keralan (King?) Fish curry, aubergine curry, channa masala, one rice and raita - vadai and poppadom for starters. Yum.
I'd avoid the fish fry - bloody gorgeous but poor value.
I'm not sure how they would do a take out dosa considering the size of the pancake?
If eating in get a dosa down ya washed down with a mango lassi.

Dosas don't travel well - they can get a bit soggy. Definitely worth getting if eating in though.

Cauliflower 65 is the veggie version of this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZEaYngbp4w)!

I have been in East and West a few times - twice with asian friends and twice in purely caucasian company. The food was definitely spicier when I went with asians. I guess they must tone it down a little sometimes!
