I have read a load of different posts about Sheffield, but could do with some specific help.

I am currently working overseas, but have just been told that I am to return to the UK, to work in South West Rotherham (near Brinsworth). I know nothing at all about the area and cannot visit easily either...

We are "young professionals - late twenties", looking for a decent area to live, within a 45 minute commute from South-West Rotherham. We would look to buy a house as we currently have a small 2 bedroom house in surrey, which should get sold for £175,000.

From most of your posts, people seem to be recommending to live in areas in the centre, West - areas like Crookes, Hunters Bar, Broomhill...

How long will it take me to get to Brinsworth / Rotherham from these areas? If it's a long way, is there anywhere else that people would recommend?

Thanks!

From Hunters Bar or Crookes to Brinsworth is probably around 25 minutes outside peak times and about 40 minutes during peak times.

I don't think there's an area within Sheffield that wouldn't get you to Brinsworth within 45 minutes (unless the traffic is really bad) so you can choose just about anywhere. My advice would be to stick to the south-west quadrant of Sheffield. Within this you can choose between vibrant, student/young professional areas like Hunters Bar, Crookes and Broomhill, or further out from the centre the affluent suburbs like Fulwood, Ecclesall and Dore. It depends very much on what kind of lifestyle you want. For your budget, you should be able to get something decent with the £175k in the student/young professional areas, but be prepared to add to it (possibly double) in some of the suburbs.

HTH :)

If you want to be handy for Rotherham, try areas such as Attercliffe, Darnall etc.. As they're on the outskirts of the City, and not that far from Rotherham, not sure what house prices are like down there though.

You could look around Aston and the A57 corridor out towards Crystal Peaks. Should be handy for getting onto the A630 and into Brindsworth (if it's where I think it is). There is to be a new link road built too, which should make that journey even easier.

i used to do ecclesall road to hellaby (down the parkway then m18) in 40 minutes.

ecclesally to brinsworth (say BOC or DHL companies) would take about 30 minutes.

Aston, Swallownest, Aughton, Treeton, Beighton, Todwick etc.

Brinsworth is 15 minutes from Aston/Swallownest

Thanks everyone - your comments were very useful. I am used to living in the south-east where 45 minutes is a pretty small catchment area, so am pleased that I've got flexibility. :)

It's tough as we cannot pop up for the weekend to get a feel, however your comments are great. Sheffield is one of the few areas of the country where we know little. (A little embarassing for a nottingham born guy who has half of his family living in Yorkshire)

I guess the lifestyle we want is to be able to get access to lively areas - for meals, nights out, shopping etc. pretty easy, but as we are reaching out thirties, clubbing on a thursday night is now a no-no. So we may also consider more out of town suburbs if they are nice.

SouthWest also makes it easier for me to get to Nottingham to watch forest (but I probably should not have mentioned that here...)

Guess it also depends on where my wife gets a job....

The house prices in Darnall/Attercliffe will be fairly cheap (5 bedroom plus for £175k!!)

I'd recommend areas around Crystal Peaks (S20) although not Westfield. Many younger and professional couples seem to be moving to the area.

PM me if you ever want mor advice

Thanks for the info - I may take you up on that.

My wife's brother's friend has said that Darnall is a bit grim. 5 bedroom house for 175k is good value though!

I'll need to look for good train / bus links probs to sheff centre also as my wife doesn't like driving and I guess that's the most likely place she'll end up working...

You're welcome.

Darnall is fine depending on where you live. It has a high asian population (Staniforth Rd part). I dont really know much of Attercliffe housing though as cant think of where the housing is!!

Darnall is great for bus links (No. 52 every 6 mins) but the S20 i talk about is served by the Supertram which i'd use any day over local buses. Certain parts of S20 are served by the 41 which is every 10 mins.

Ahhh, Woodhouse it is then!

The train gets you to town in ten mins (20mins to Meadowhall). It can't be done quicker! Bus - 30+ mins, tram from Crystal Peaks - 20+ mins?, Car - 15 mins (but then you need to park the damn thing)

Stay out of the Badger Estate though ;) (but you'd probably get 2 houses there for your budget)

Badger estate - what a name! Reminds me of when I lived in Bristol and they had Badgerline buses!

OK, we will take a look at Woodhouse, as well as a few of the other SW areas that people have suggested. Hopefully my wife will have a chance to pop down there in August to get a better feel

Thanks!

:suspect: why not just live in Brinsworth?

Imagine the petrol you'd save?

Whoops - so those towns are in the south-east, but the places also suggested are in the south-west (except Darnall) and then also recommended is Brinsworth.

'tis tough atm for me to naviagate the posts as I'm living outside the UK atm and have not visited Sheffield since 1993..

I guess it also depends on where my wife gets a job as she is less flexible than me on transportation...

:suspect:

Thanks for all the info though.

Brinsworth gets the thumbs up from me as well.
A very nice, under-rated area. Stay clear of it's neighbour 'Canklow' though :P

Brinsworth isn't too far from Rotherham Town Centre and is right on the road to Sheffield and Meadowhall.

Avoid Darnall!
I don't live in Sheffield but I get around plenty and Darnall is probably the *the* last place I would want to buy a house.

Thanks all. Been a while since I was on, as I've been verrrry busy.

Ended up moving to Wadsley area - near Middlewood tram stop, near Hillsborough. About 30 minutes to get to work, access to the town centre by tram and peak district.

Which is nice.

Getting to know sheffield a bit better! I'll try and pop on here a bit more often...
