View Full Version : Gareth Barry to Man City - £12m
Agent Gypo 02-06-2009, 16:11 My first question would be this: where has your ambition disappeared to?
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/02/manchester-city-gareth-barry-aston-villa
amazing!!! being a liverpool fan i would have alonso over him any day but still wouldnt have minded him at anfield.
however, he has apparently wanted to leave villa to fulfil euro ambitions. so he leaves a side who had qualified for europe for a team that has not!!! not exactly a spring chicken is he?
hmmm 100k a week? liverpool would not give him that much!
plekhanov 02-06-2009, 18:41 Strange move by City they've already got plenty of central midfielders & I'm not at all sure Barry is really an upgrade from what they already have.
Still perhaps Liverpool supporters will be able to relax now as Bentiez will have to call off his bizarre attempt to downgrade Alonso for Barry.
I think its a money motivated move, its not a football move because he has gone sideways not upwards

Money is obviously Barry's motivation, I just don't get City's. They are weaker in others areas and Barry isn't really any better than what they already have.
Mercenary 02-06-2009, 20:46 It looks like Kaka is on his way to Real Madrid rather than Man City. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2009/jun/02/kaka-real-madrid-ac-milan) Perez is looking to spend big over the summer- Kaka, Ribery, Ronaldo, Alonso and Villa are the first few on the shopping list. I'm glad they are going back to Galactico spending it's great :). Spend big money and amazing midfielders and forwards and then buy defenders of Johnathan Woodgate standard. Although saying that, with Iker Cassias between the sticks they don't really need to go out and spend megabucks on center halfs.
medionman 03-06-2009, 18:28 nowdays players have no loyalty they are just greedy sods who are well overpayed
Crunchy Nut 03-06-2009, 19:59 Apparantley his fav Karoake tune is Money Money Money by ABBA
The blokes left a team playing in Europe next season and who are on the up for a team who are in working progress but apart from money are a long way behind villa
Mercenary 04-06-2009, 12:34 Can't really blame him though. If I was at Villa since the age of 16 and someone offered me 100k a week to play for Man City there would be a me shaped hole in the nearest wall.
The move does seem strange to begin with but look deeper and it makes sense. Whatever we think about City, they have the financial clout to bring in big name players...Villa aren't that ambitious and don't have the backing. You certainly can't see Villa being linked with Et'o and Tevez.
As Chelsea have demonstrated..throw money at the problem and you can buy some reasonable success...a blueprint that Man City are keen on using.

Throwing money at it doesn't always work mate,Man City threw a hell of lot of it around last season and didn't even make Europe and if you look at Sunderland,Boro and particulary Newcastle money doesn't always bring you success or stability
JFKvsNixon 04-06-2009, 20:36 Maybe he went to Man City because Liverpool can't afford him:

I don't think they spent well at all last season- £14M for Bellamy? They also didn't have much time to make signings, only 1 day last summer and the January window when not much business is done. Even then, they broke the Premiership transfer record with Robinho and he finished as the fourth top scorer in the league. Give them a full summer and they'll probably spend well over £100M and will have a great chance next season to do something special.
Edit: Also, Chelsea were already a Champions League team when Abromovich bought them whereas Man City were at best an overachieving midtable team.

Hopefully this will force them to sell.

As is correct in any job. These lads retire in their thirties, make as much money as you can. Good on him.
