View Full Version : Is Toby Foster leaving Radio Sheffield?

I was listening to Toby yesterday afternoon and he had a caller on who said that she had heard he was leaving, Toby quickly changed the subject.

So is he leaving and if so where is he going?

I read this in the Star the other night. He let it slip on-air that he wants to leave, but he didn't go into it any further. I didn't hear it, I just read it in the Star.

It'll be a BIG shame if he does go. He's great and I honestly think he's turned Radio Sheffiwobble around. You can't believe everything you read in the paper, I know, but it said that he 'wasn't happy with the earlier starts.' No, I wouldn't be either!

Let's just hope it's wrong and he is staying! :D

Maybe it will serve Radio Sheffield right if Toby Foster quits, THEY didn't show much sympathy or concern when they sacked the late Tony Capstick, or going back even further the wonderful sports presenter Robert Jackson.

If you are reading this Bob WE STILL MISS YOU, you were the best they ever had and none of us have ever forgotten you.

Sadly Cappo cannot replace him.

Whatever is wrong with Radio Sheffield?

If he does it should only be for a cool million and a TV tie in ( which includes jamie Campbell) ..a bit like Andy and Jonathan Ross

Nothing wrong with BBC Radio Sheffield Great Presenters , Great programmes, Great Producers great staff...Bob Jackson retired of his own volition and Cappo was fired for personal related problems (I loved him by the way)

Tony Capstick was fired to allow the station to bring in a club comic in his place, Bob Jackson was taken off air because he didn't fit in with the 'new modern look' of the station.

There really is no need to start so early though, as I never listen before 9:30.

All the best,

General question for SFers - Who else listens to Radio Sheffield in preference to other stations?

Maggi, whose weekday goes from Sheffield towards R4, to R3, to R2(Mon-Thu).

I only ever listen to Toby, no other morning show is the same with the personalised interaction and humour. If you moved to another station then I'd still tune in. Plus you play rock - so I'm loyal forever!

I don't get to hear a lot of the show, I listen in while on the bus through my mobile phone's radio.

I have never listened to local radio intentionally but I have had the odd few seconds when a traffic report cuts in and some moron is still talking about pretty much anything that fills up airtime. I have heard Toby speak on other occasions and would suggest that he is too good for local radio. I would suggest he works for Radio 4 so that I can listen to him.

Go back to the afternoon slot,if Radio Chuff didn`t have a phone number, Bernie would be lost for words.

Billy24
12-07-2005, 12:05
Bernie would be good on hospital radio, Toby would be good on a station all of his own where he could repeat as many times as he likes "Your Listening To The Toby Foster Show" and that other guy who is on air on Saturday mornings should stick to being just a blue comic on the clubs.

But I'm not bitter and it doesn't get at me!

I know its a matter of opinion, but Hallam FM basically is like all the commercial stations, repeating the same 20 or so tunes all day everyday. Whats the point?

Toby seems a top bloke to me. and it would be a big shame if he did leave the show.

People should appreciate he is on our radio at the moment.

Remember that please before you start slagging the guy off.

Witty and original, no he isn't. The likes of him can be seen any Saturday night on any of the stages of the numerous WMC's throughout the North.

Jimmy Carol is nowhere near as bad but I agree about the 'where's me duck' man.

It seems a bit odd discussing the fella when he's on the forum and popping his head into the discussion itself, but what the hell. He/you get/gets my vote. I don't tune in as often since he/you was plonked onto the morning slot, but was a very regular listener to the afternoon show. Can't say I blame him/you if he's/you're bummed out over the crappy slot, and it wouldn't be the first balls up the station will have made if he/you walks/walk.

Got to be kind to him/you anyway as I once won a couple Lord Of The Rings cinema tickets in one of his/your phone-ins. Which was nice.

I can't believe that you've seen him live, to compare to WMC humour, he's obviously 'slightly' more restricted on the radio. Personally I don't remember a funnier night than at his reg slot on Thursdays. But this is a forum everyone's entitled to their opinion. Comdedians especially have limited audiences because everyones sense of humour is different.

Radio Sheffield's audience figures are at their highest in donkeys.... I think that speaks for itself.

In answer to the thread title, I'm not leaving the Beeb, I enjoy it. The new start time, well relatively new, is fine. I've got a young baby, with another on the way so getting up at half six is hardly a chore. The point they were trying to make in The Star was that I'm busy, so must want to pack in. They're right about being busy (they missed out a documentary we're making in New York!), but I'll just keep juggling the hours.

Thanks for all the nice things that've been said, but if we can go back to discussing tattooists, or the state of Millhouses Park, I can join in without feeling quite so embarrassed.

Cheers

Don't slag off what you know nowt about, Toby is one of the funniest comics in the country, but I don't think he's ever been in a WMC as a comic! Jimmy Carrol is the funniest and quickest wit in the country IN THE WMC's, and I watched him compare the clubland awards at the Dial House, the show lasted over 4 hours and Mr. Carrol did'nt swear once but had the crowd in stiches all night. Foster is fantastic radio, Carol could be just a good. So go and watch/listen to these comic's and then slag em off, at least then you'll know what your talking about.

I saw Jimmy Carrol at the Darnall Libs clubland awards. Was very very funny. Thanked one old Lady - "Ethel - she's 93 arrrr"
for coming to the clubland awards "for one last time."

And to a lady in a bright red top "bet you gave the wolf a scare".

No bad language, just banter with the audience. If you go, you expect it, and was very funny but harmless with it.

So, Jimmy Carrol's that funny he can insult an old lady like Ethel at 93 in front of hundreds with "thanks for coming because it'll be the last chance you get" or words to that effect.

Will someone pick me up off the floor from the hysterics attack I am now suffering, that was so un-funny I would sooner suffer from acute backache rather than have been there to hear it, (he once came to our local pub and was absolutely filthy).

The people in here who have been recently posting to pledge their allegiances to Mr Foster, Carrol & Clifton proclaiming they are the funniest comedians they have seen would be well advised to speak to some of the older generation who had the pleasure of watching real comic genius, such as Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Eric Morcambe & Les Dawson.

These men really were worthy of being called funny.

I dont think you've read this right...or you haven't seen 'Tommy Cooper, Ken Dodd, Eric Morcambe & Les Dawson' live.

Im young, (well 31) and i like all of the above names you mentioned, but 'LIVE' and 'TV' performances are completely different.
I bet ya, the 93 year old woman laughed at that joke, it doesnt sound funny to read, but when you go see a comedian, everyone becomes a target. It's called fun and a laugh.
When i worked in a bingo club, some years ago, I had the pleasure of seeing and meeting Bob Monkhouse, who is probably one of the all time greats, and he insulted and joked with old/young/smart/scruffy/anybody. And everyone (suprisingly including me, at the time) found him hilarious.

Point being, if you like PC, dont see or listen to Bernard Manning. If you're hung up about age and that, dont go to a comedy club, if you dont like Toby Foster or Jimmy Carroll, change to Hallam FM or Classic FM, and if you dont like people being joked about in clubs, stay at home and watch Corrie.

I'm not getting at you billy, dont reply with loads of anger, one quick question though... you can tell a lot about people, when they answer this...do you find 'the office' funny?

Billy24
18-07-2005, 07:56
Of course I won’t reply with loads of anger djash, in fact I quite enjoyed reading your reply. I’m not that old either you know, (except my 17yr old daughter says I am). My original post was mostly tongue in cheek intended to stir a bit of a flutter in here lol. You are right what you say on line 3 and 4 of your post, watching a performer live IS so much better when your talking about a class act, I saw Tommy Cooper at the Fiesta Club in 1973 and he was brilliantly funny and had everyone in tears of laughter, but on TV he wasn’t half as funny, never saw Mr Dawson perform although I did once meet him, and I never saw Eric Morecambe or Ken Dodd either but I’d bet my last dollar they were very funny live performers.
Regarding changing to Hallam FM? … I’d sooner be staked out on the ground in the boiling hot dessert and left there to die.

Regards to you. :hihi:

For the record Toby is a very nice fella in person and as I've also seen his stand up routine I can say from experience that he's a very funny fella too. He blew the other comedian away - some scouse bloke I seem to remember.
