Been to see the descent today and I would just like to highly recommend it. It has everything in it a good scary film should have. Anyone else have any opinions on it or have any suggestions about any other scary films?

View Full Version : Any good scary films out? susa41981 09-07-2005, 23:01 Been to see the descent today and I would just like to highly recommend it. Beakerzoid 10-07-2005, 02:29 Wasn't impressed with Descent. Thought it started promising, but then resorted to all the usual cliches to try to scare. Worst of all is the use of music to tell you when to be scared! This is a common thing in 'horror' films these days. Sorry...but I don't find the sound of a cello scary! It's a shame, as i was expecting something different from the maker of Dog Soldiers. It felt like he let someone else direct from the half way mark. Personally, I think the only films that have a ture grasp on horror are those from Japan/Korea/Hong Kong. In them the atmosphere is un-nerving, utilising silence to scare more than noise. bensonhedges 10-07-2005, 09:17 Have to agree with you about The Descent - few bits that made me jump when the creatures first appear but then it just rambled on for ages basically redoing the same scene several times. The Grudge and The Ring are much better - really eerie. I am looking forward to Dark Water (from the writer of The Ring) which is out shortly, after being delayed since last December for who knows what reason. A good site to go to if you are into this kind of film is www.upcominghorrormovies.com - american but still full of good info. Beakerzoid 10-07-2005, 10:32 The Japanese Dark Water was a tense, chilling ghost story, and really managed to pull the nerve endings up and down my spine. Want to see the remake...and no doubt will. Walter Salles (the director) is a wonderful director (if you haven't seen Motorcycle Diaries...go rent it...nay, buy it...now). But then again, Ring 2 was directed by the director of the Japanese Ringu, and was terrible. The Grudge remake was directed by the same guy who directed the 4 other Grudge films in Japan, and just wasn't as scary (relied on the orchestra again)...so I am not getting too excited for fear of being really disappointed. If you want to see really messed up Japanese horror...look out for a film called Uzamaki on DVD. Not the best of films, but truely messed up! Rich 10-07-2005, 10:42 War of the Worlds is quite scary IMO. Lestat 10-07-2005, 11:43 There is a film I saw a few years ago starring Michael Douglas and Val Kilmer called 'The Ghost and The Darkness' it's a true story about a pair of maneating lions that terrified the Hindu & Muslim workers in Africa. They were helping the British Raj to build a railway bridge across a river in Tsavo. The film has some horrifyingly realistic and heart-stopping moments that will scare the pants off you. Kilmer plays Patterson the architect and Douglas is the brave old hunter who teaches him how to hunt lions. If you ever get a chance to see it - you'll not regret it. Jon 10-07-2005, 12:13 THE GHOST AND THE DARKNESS True story? You've gotta be lion! Roger Ebert really stuck it to this movie when it came out, giving it his second-lowest rating, a scathing review, and a place on his "worst of 1996" list. It's a safe bet that I liked this one a little more than he did. I think I liked my last bout of motion sickness more than he liked this movie. bellis 10-07-2005, 12:18 i thought CREEP was a good film quite scary in places with a bit of gore thrown in as well worth a watch Jon 10-07-2005, 12:21 The film i thought was good is called "Saw" great ending. It is a true story, the lions are now apparently stuffed and are on display in the Chicago museum. See the linky matey http://www.fieldmuseum.org/exhibits/exhibit_sites/tsavo/maneaters.html And its still for me a brilliant scary film in places. Actually, Dark Water is out, I saw it a few months ago (try Choices in Crookes). Its worth the watch! Tigs 10-07-2005, 14:08 Also, White Noise was a much better film than what I expected. The theme of the film spooked me for a while afterwards, unusual in this day and age! ANGELUS 10-07-2005, 15:16 I like the Final Destination films, I think they are pretty good.. and they are making Final Destination 3 at the moment which centres on a rollercoaster disaster.. which will be fantastic I reckon. The first one's good (especially the scene where the plane explodes) but I thought the second one was absolutely awful - no plot, just a bunch of people kicking the bucket in increasingly unbelievable ways. robbie 10-07-2005, 16:09 most western horror films aren't scary. They either go for gore or cliche's. The obvious Asian choices: Ringu Tale of Two Sisters Ju-on loads are available over there that don't get released fully here. Some have just come out ans some never will. if you can watch Kairo it is my favourite horror film stuff like: Into the Mirror The Eye Dark Water Shutter St John's Wort Uzikami all have scary bits in them. Beakerzoid 10-07-2005, 16:28 Originally posted by Tigs Actually, Dark Water is out, I saw it a few months ago (try Choices in Crookes). Its worth the watch! I think the mention of Dark Water coming out was to do with the US remake of it due out later this month. The Dark Water you are on about is the original Japanese one. Also...Robbie....Great list! Spot on Robbie, I'd forgotten about Tale of two sisters, excellent film. robbie 10-07-2005, 21:46 if you're looking for western horror films: these are the best I've seen recently: Frailty Blair Witch Session 9 Final Destination 1 and 2 are good but not really scary Dawn of the Dead remake Cube (but not really horror) also The Devil's Backbone and the Others. nick2 11-07-2005, 08:05 I was suprised how scarey The Grudge was, but children in horror films are so much more frightening than adults. Lestat 11-07-2005, 08:56 What about some good old classics!! The Shining, Exorcist, Salems Lot, American Werewolf in London, Silence of the Lambs, Blair Witch, Sixth Sense etc. Forget all this Japanese rubbish - they're all the same, when you've seen one you've seen them all. It's either shadows, women screeching or that stop/start robotic camera movement. Ever since the Ring they've all copied it. Abit like bullet time was copied after the Matrix. Nah, the Americans may be cr*p at everything else but at least their films have abit of variety. BruciesBabe 12-07-2005, 12:27 American Werewolf - excellent - I still can't watch the begining when they are on the moors! For classic horror - the old Christopher Lee Dracula films are fab too! not scary anymore though! |
