View Full Version : Where was Brightside Farm, Burslem St? fourfive 09-07-2005, 22:38 Can anyone tell me where Brightside farm, on burslem street was? I have tried a few searches but come up with nothing. Thanks. HughW 09-07-2005, 23:26 taking two bits of evidence: (1) White's 1901 Directory (on the web on this site) (http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/index.asp) Street Directory Burslem Street Brightside farm (Cottam, Vincent cart owner) Old Colliery buildings Limpsfield St (mistake for Limpsfield Rd) Dearne St Eben St (2) 1905 Ordnance Survey Burslem St runs east west connecting the southern ends of the above streets. Just to the west where the road stops is what looks like farm buildings, with 'old shafts' beyond. I could be wrong (they might be the colliery buildings). On the modern map these buildings would be in the triangle formed by Holywell Road, Colliery Road and the railway, or possibly under Holywell Rd itself. Hugh fourfive 09-07-2005, 23:48 Thanks for that HughW. Its in relation to Vincent Cottam that i am seeking the information. Do you know if there is a web site that i can view the 1905 ordnance survey map? Thanks HughW 10-07-2005, 00:12 This reprinted map is sold commercially by Alan Godfrey Maps (http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/) so it's not on the web. It's the Wincobank & Meadowhall Sheet (and I see it's actually the 2nd edition of a 1902 map). If you're in Sheffield you can buy these maps at, for example, Sheffield Scene, Surrey Street. I tried looking to see what Old-Maps.co.uk (http://www.old-maps.co.uk/) has to offer but it's not working properly at the moment.
