I just checked on Google Earth. Is the cemetery hidden by trees next to the go cart track or is it further on.
Its not as big as I expected.
The old tip at the side of the cemetery had rolled over and covered some of it when I saw it last. 1970 at a guess.

There was a friends of Wardsend Cemetery and they have/had a web site http://www.fowc.i12.com/
Nothing seems to have been added for years and the links don't work

The chapel had been demolished by the 1950s - I remember seeing the foundations and the stone "plinth" but the walls had gone. See also this thread: http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19816

If my memory is correct it was to the left of the Five Arches railway bridge, as you look from the Wednesday ground and was built over for the brewery distribution warehouse now on that site. An old water mill was also destroyed when they brewery distribution buildings were erected.

This scan from a 1914 map shows the approximate location of the chapel in relation to the bridge and "wier": http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/Wardsend.jpg

That's right. There were also a couple of smaller cottages that were demolished, and the occupants were rehoused by the brewery in rented houses. Only the short row of cottages immediately below the Five Arches survived the development. I'd never heard of Wards End house, what's it's history, I assume latterly owned by the brewery.
How old is Herries rd. how does it get it's name.
That should keep you busy for half an hour Hillsboro

Herries Road was built in the 1920s, and named after the Herries family who owned some of the land nearby. There was a chapel in the cemetery,I remeber when I was a kid on the shirecliffe doing shortcuts down the zig-zag and at that time it was working about 1948-9 it was an annexe of St Phillips on Infirmary Rd.Wardsend was originally called Worldsend,I heard that durind the war,the son of the family who owned it would do a barrel roll as he flew over it.

I remember the blue light airplane that used to fly over Wardsend House and do flying stunts. I was told it was the son of the Oxspring family who did it ion his mother's birthday but I only heard that.

Happy Days!

I believe the church authorities are still responsible for Wardsend cemetery and they're having discussions (more likely an argument) with the council about who will pay for its protection/rescue.

How soon before it's a block of 'riverside apartments' ?

Only the Chapel was demolished, the headstones should still be there

Thanks for info I think I may have to visit the cemetry and search for my nan's grave
Searching through family papers I have found certificate for opening our other family plot in St Philips Burial Ground. In 1929 it cost £ 3 to have the exclusive use of the family grave
In 1957 it cost £8 to open remove memorials and refix the grave my nan was laid next to her kin.
It's great to find old paperwork.
Many thanks Greybeard and Blackbeard.

Smuffin, If this grave dates from 1929 it is likely to be in the 'new portion' above the railway. I have recently been photographing gravestones in that part (long way to go though).

Would you mind telling me the grave reference (from the documents) or the names of the people buried there. You can send me a private message if you prefer. Even if I don't have photo I can probably give you a good idea of where to look.

Well I never knew that I lived in Lamb Road for 21years,Southey Cresent for 2 years and Godley Road Shiregreen for 2 years I've never heard it called that
I did know Lamb was a poet and thinking about it it makes sense.

I'm in there regular with my dogs, and played around that area throughout the 60s
the Chapel was the low side of the railway, near to the stone bridge, a stones throw from Coopers scrap yard, I can pin point where the Chapel once stood. It was very small

I have now visited Wardsend Cemetry and with the help of Hugh W have found my nan's grave. It took a bit of clearing but I now have photos of the grave.
I hope the council do take over the upkeep of this cemetry. It's heartbreaking to see some of the collapsed and broken headstones.
Thankfully the headstone was intact
It will not be my last visit.
