Was there ever a plan (early 1980's) to have an Olympic Games bid for Mexborough!? It might just have been an April Fool's; but I seem to remember a feature on Radio Hallam or Look North/Calendar. They by-lined it "Mexico, Munich, Montreal, Moscow, Mexborough!". Kevin.

Mexborough is a dossole, the scruffiest place on the planet. Why would anyone want to have the games at that place,I know what the place is like because my grandson lived there for a time.Horrible Place.

Tosh 13 ,

Now , look , please don't rush into making a rash judgement .
Remember there's the , "Who Can Drink TheMost On Saturday ? " competition . There's the , "Most baseball caps per sq. km. " contest.
Not to mention the , "Anti-cultural finals of Great Britain, 2012 "
All these events could be cheerfully arranged in Mexborough . No problem , dude !
Any overspill or spin-offs could be sent to Pontefract.

No rash judgement mate, I have been on several occasions & man slum does not come into it.I guess there may be a few decent parts ,but the parts I have seen should have been demolished years ago.

Hackney, where they plan to hold the 2012 Games, is no Eden; believe me! I've been there often enough. There a parts of it where it is dangerous to walk between your car and your front door! Kevin.

Is it twinned with Mexborough seeing as it is that bad,I went down London when I was 14 with my school which was around 1970 & man it was scruffy on the tubes,I was glad to get home to the best place on the planet Sheffield.

England is a scruffy country! Those were the words of a visiting African lady my family knew in Sheffield in the 70's. I live in the Garden of England, but even here there is litter everywhere, un-swept roads and a dirty and derelict urban environment. We are certainly going to have to buck our ideas-up in the next seven years; unless so, we are going to make a pig's ear of the Olympics.

Still no answer to my question! Kevin.
