Ghostrider 28-05-2009, 13:54 This kitten came from me.
I had no knowledge of her having ear mites (or the others, if they have them)
It was only last night we noticed the mother scratching her ear, so we have had her checked...
If you did get a kitten from me, and it does have ear mites, please accept my apologies, I am not a cat breeder and dont know that much about cats - I just wanted to make sure they got good homes.
Im now going to read up a bit more about cats (and the mother is already booked into the vets to be spayed)
I cannot contact the other people directly as I cleared out my inbox yesterday, but hopefully they will see this...

get some stronghold flea drops from vets-same as frontline but treat ear mites too. Killing 2 birds with 1 stone as you dont need to spend extra on flea treatment.

I think that it is really refreshing that you can be so honest, these things do happen, great suggestion cuddlycats at least its a problem easy to solve :)

Funnily enough, the only reason the kittens were sold was to make sure they went to homes that didnt just want one on a whim and to enable me to be able to afford to have the mother spayed...
I can heartily recommend Stronghold or Advocate (both kill ear mites as well as fleas) but please do remember that you will still need to clean the cat's ears to remove the debris from the ear mites, because if that's left around it will provide a breeding ground for ear mites in the future.
I'd recommend getting a basic ear cleaner like Leo's ear cleaner, giving a good squirt of it down both ears and then giving the ears a good massage to mobilise all the gunk. Then restrain your cat effectively (my personal way of restraining them for ear cleaning is usually kneeling on the floor with the cat wedged in between my legs, leaving my good arm free for getting a cotton wool ball and some cotton buds down into the ear to remove the debris. It will take LOTS of cotton buds to clean the visible areas of the ear canal- get plenty ready and accessible before you restrain your mog.
You also need to be aware that if you know that the cat has ear mites you need to treat for at least 3 months consecutively with Stronghold or Advocate- one treatment will probably not be enough to kill all the ear mites successfully.
Good luck on surviving the ear cleaning with all of your skin intact Muzz ;)

Dont worry, I know.
If I knew more about cats I may have spotted this, turns out its not a major problem from what Medusa has said - but as she also said, I may have fun trying to treat my cats ( I think you saw the size of my tomcat:suspect:)
Cost me £25 to get treatment for my Boxer. They prescribed Canaural.
It can happen to anyone at anytime, especially if one member of the household mingles with others.
Ear mites are a major issue if they're left- they can completely block the ear canal and cause scarring bad enough to damage the hearing in kittens (which obviously leads to lifelong deafness) but that's only if they aren't treated. In the short term they're irritating and messy, but they're not likely to kill your animals, just make their lives uncomfortable and make them deaf.
In the short term they cause itching and irritation which leads to the animals kicking their ears until they're bloody. That's only a side effect but it's usually the first sign in adult animals. If you look at how much of a mess some animals make of their ears you can understand quite how bad the itching can be.
If your tom really won't be held to be treated then you can opt for him to have a sedative to have his ears washed out Muzz- but obviously that's more expensive than treating him yourself and you'll still have to get him in a basket to go down the vets. Whatever you do with him in future I'd recommend getting Stronghold or Advocate flea treatments to prevent him from catching them in future.
In terms of your beasties xxnikkixx, I'd get a good look down their ears and take it from there. If you've only had the kitten a week or two you'll probably get away with some Advocate or Stronghold treatments to prevent them from getting a hold in your other animals, but you can only get them with a prescription so one of your other cats at least will need to have a vet appointment to get the spot ons.
The one word of caution is that an ear mite infection can take weeks to become apparent, so don't assume that because you can't see them now you are in the clear. In the same way as one flea takes time to become an infestation the same is true of ear mites.
All cat and dog owners should be having a look and a smell down their pets' ears on a regular basis anyway while doing health checks because so many ear conditions can be picked up early on (bacterial ear infections usually smell foul, so sniffing the ears is not such a crazy thing to do!).
xxnikkixx 29-05-2009, 12:57 is it possible to get any from a pet shop obviously this wont be as good i know but i hought i could use that on the dogs to stop then from getting mites thanks going o ring local vets and get her booked in only one of the kittens has them really bad but i think i should treat the outher as she sleeps with the outher and plays with her so they do get really close
