View Full Version : The Rude Shipyard, Abbeydale Road
Banjo Griner 28-05-2009, 09:43 I was in here the other day for a coffee and a bite to eat, 'twas very nice and chilled. I ended up buying a couple of books too. Pretty unique little place - just what Sheffield needs.
There's something in the Telegraph (http://www.sheffieldtelegraph.co.uk/foodguide/Book-in-for-a-coffee.5304832.jp) about it. Anyone else been?
I have. I thought it was great too - unlike anything else in Sheffield.
cocoagirls 02-06-2009, 17:59 We LOVE this place, great food, perfect atmosphere, books galore, fabulous hosts!!!
Good luck guys!!! xxx
RozeePozee 06-06-2009, 19:37 Seems to me that this area is developing into a really interesting place - much better than Ecclesall Road's faceless bars and coffee houses.
My partner and I made a visit to The Rude Shipyard on Saturday, it will probably be our last. Sadly, we didn't realize that rudeness applied to the customers as well. I'd only two sips of my coffee when a group of three pram pushing ladies (and I use the term loosely) and a man jammed their way into the cafe, prams and all. Mind you there is only enough room in the place to fit two tables and they moved right in without apology, shoving by the back of me as if I weren't even there. When I attempted to move out of their way and switched chairs they couldn't even be bothered to acknowledge the gesture. There is a lovely upright piano against the wall that the one woman, who, did I mention, earlier swung open the front door of the cafe, fashioned her fingers to her lips and let out a 'come on down' whistle to her companions who were still up the street quite a distance. This one had a 3 year old who she allowed to stand and bang on the keys of the piano with his toy truck, again without apology or even acknowledgment that there may be others trying to enjoy themselves in this self-proclaimed quiet bookshop. Another ordered hot chocolate for her 3 year old who immediately spilled it all over the counter. It was a circus of chaos. Don't know if this crew were mates of the guy behind the register doing the serving, but if they were, they're not doing him any favours. There needs to be a sign posted outside - No prams in house and mind your children. As we were walking out the door the piano banging little darling had moved onto our table and was left to play in the sugar bowl - would beware - who knows if the bowl got cleaned or the sugar changed after his grubby hands had been in it.
Carborundum 07-06-2009, 08:19 So its turning into the Rude Chav Tipyard beneath my Broken WIndow now is it ?? This is the danger of opening sophisticated coffee shops in a very much NON sophisticated area where you can concieveably get all the chav unemployed pregnant unmarried benefit sucking mothers invading your premises - such a sad outcome to a very promising venture ..
Hi, no, not saying that at all. The place would seem to be frequented by a kind of pseudo intellectual bohemian mix. And, while i would welcome an atmosphere bathed in high-brow conversation, fueled by the excellent blend of Almond tea, which i would highly recommend. It turned out to be a Crag hopper fest of seemingly over educated, ill mannered and badly coiffed baby makers. Now. I must at this point stress that i have nothing against people with bad hair, babies, piercings, etc etc etc. I would just like them to behave as though they were in a public place where others may come to partake of the ambiance. And not as if they were in a scene from Lord of the Flies. Long gone are the days when children should be seen and not heard, but my god... Well enough said. Of course it may have been that the customers who turned up at the same time as myself were practicing for Glastonbury. But who knows? Try the place for yourselves. But Be warned Mr proprietor. People who use the cafe as purely a meeting place and spend 2 hours over 1 cup of coffee will lead inevitably to ruination. Ta Ta.
andymarshall 07-06-2009, 09:53 wow.
must resist urge to respond to above 3 comments....
i personally would happily recommend the rude shipyard to everyone, including those with kids.
i wouldn't recommend it to stuck up folk who belong in some dull bland coffee shop with no character and sugar in little paper sachets tho - gdwink, i think, must be speaking to you.
it may also be worth saying that the rude shipyard positively welcome anybody to come along whether they have kids or not and also inviting people to play the instruments - unlike most places that may use such things only as decorations.
and it is also worth saying that i was there that afternoon and would like to add that the aforementioned woman with "bad hair and piercings" helped the mums with prams in, asked to get a cloth when their kid spilt some hot chocolate, and stopped the kid playing the piano with their truck.
there is an upstairs btw.
andymarshall 07-06-2009, 09:55 gdwink - can i just confirm you wont be going back there?

He loves pianos...
Banjo Griner 07-06-2009, 10:58 Mm. The anonymity of the internet really brings out the best in some people.
Lady Star 07-06-2009, 11:14 So its turning into the Rude Chav Tipyard beneath my Broken WIndow now is it ?? This is the danger of opening sophisticated coffee shops in a very much NON sophisticated area where you can concieveably get all the chav unemployed pregnant unmarried benefit sucking mothers invading your premises - such a sad outcome to a very promising venture ..
Er, hello??? Perhaps you don't know where this cafe is, but it's only just opened, and isn't far from Bragazzi's, and Matteo never has a load of chavs in his place - the description given seems to be of the feckless middleclasses who let little johnny roam free, so he can better develop his unique personality - a chav wouldn't have wasted money on a hot chocolate for a kid!
andymarshall 07-06-2009, 13:49 hello.
perhaps you dont know the meaning of feckless???
look it up - theres plenty of free online dictionaries out there.
a ineffective, incompetent and irresponsible (ie feckless) person would not make the intentional decision to "better develop [their child's] unique personality".
perhaps people should also leave objectional, offensive and judgemental comments on another persons ability to parent out of a public forum (see these forums Terms of Use & Rules)
you should probably also leave the derogatory class comments out of it while you're at it.
therudeship 07-06-2009, 13:56 Hello there,
I do apologise if you didn't enjoy your time at our humble spot gdwink. We only have a small place here (the big room upstairs will be opening soon!) as you will have seen for yourself, so we do fill up pretty quickly but we are open to everyone. We won't be excluding prams nor are they part of the furniture. I guess it's just pot luck! Saturday was certainly our busiest day yet (thanks for coming folks!), so an elbow or two may have rubbed.
Regards to you all,
The Rude Shipyard.

You certainly shouldn't have to apologise for having a very friendly and open atmosphere - from what I've been told.
As to the posters on here who grumble; did you say anything at the time?
If you didn't, then you really have nothing to complain about. You surely had ample chance to voice your concerns to the mothers or the cafe owner, and yet chose to air your views namelessly on a public forum.
Obviously, also, you've never tried taking any number of childrens and prams around town as it's never the easiest thing from a logistics point of view. You also obviously don't spend a lot of time around small children, as spilling things and generally making a mess is pretty much all they can do.
Perhaps you could have helped the ladies with prams to actually get into the cafe without causing the ruckus you described? You might have considered it your good deed for the day.
justatrifle 07-06-2009, 15:26 I don't see how the cafe can be held respnsible for the behavior of its customers. I have been in a couple of times and it was ok.... maybe tollerance and good manners are disapearing qualities
RozeePozee 07-06-2009, 17:11 Even more interesting is reading gdwink's 3 posts. The word 'rude' seems an apt one ;)
Apparently freedom of thought and speech aren't allowed in these parts, however, it does seem that suddenly the forum is all 'a-buzz' about The Rude Shipyard.

My comment re 'unique personality' was obviously a swipe - Irony? Stop being a idiot - you have your issues, thankfully they are not mine:thumbsup:
Runningman 07-06-2009, 19:34 Enjoyed our visit today. Pleasant guy and lady behind the counter. Nice cup of hot chocolate with a piece of delicious cake. Wife enjoyed her coffee and her gluten free cake.
Newspapers to read and loads of interesting books to brouse.
Memories by the score for me, as I was born and raised across from the place on Herschell Road. Seem to remember it being a bread shop years ago, think it was called Dodmans, but not sure.
Best of luck to the couple, who no doubt have sunk a fair amount of cash into starting up the venue.
You can go into any cafe / restaurant in Sheffield and be annoyed by certain customers, that's life !
Merry_Legs 07-06-2009, 19:38 Lovely place, wish there were more like it!
Where exactly on Abbeydale Rd is this place?
RozeePozee 07-06-2009, 20:34 Apparently freedom of thought and speech aren't allowed in these parts, however, it does seem that suddenly the forum is all 'a-buzz' about The Rude Shipyard. No one told you that you couldn't speak, we just had a difference of opinion - that is free speech ;)
RozeePozee 07-06-2009, 20:35 Where exactly on Abbeydale Rd is this place?Apparently it's opposite Mount Pleasant Park.
andymarshall 07-06-2009, 21:38 Where exactly on Abbeydale Rd is this place?
just past the point where london road splits off from abbeydale road, on the left as you head away from town.
mr chris 07-06-2009, 22:03 Apparently freedom of thought and speech aren't allowed in these parts, however, it does seem that suddenly the forum is all 'a-buzz' about The Rude Shipyard.
I think you'll find freedom of speech is what allows this forum to exist in the first place.
Lady Star 07-06-2009, 22:07 There was one poster on here earlier who was at odds with the ethos of the forum tho - just because gdwink doesn't like middle class mums and their offspring, that is a point they are entitled to... I get annoyed by them too, but I am perhaps more likely to tell them than gdwink?
I haven't been yet to Rude Shipyard, but would like to give em a try... If they have half the atmosphere of Cafe 9 I will almost certainly go more than once!
Badgergirl 08-06-2009, 14:40 I went on Sunday, with a baby in a buggy, which didn't seem to cause too much disruption to other customers. We were made to feel v. welcome. They had run out of most veggie stuff but were more than happy to whip up scrambled eggs on toast. It had a lovely vibe, and exceedingly moreish chocolate brownie. Also, it seemed to be very cheap, so I hope the proprietors haven't underpriced their wares, as I would love to see this cafe thrive.
brianthedog 09-06-2009, 08:00 Make or break question for me and my other half... Do they have skimmed or semi-skimmed milk?!
Banjo Griner 09-06-2009, 08:44 Make or break question for me and my other half... Do they have skimmed or semi-skimmed milk?!
I have a feeling that if you give them a bell or stick your head in the door and ask, they will get whatever you need in for you.
The site is up: www.therudeshipyard.com
Carborundum 27-06-2009, 13:09 I must say this is a really really excellent cafe ! Has anyone been to Halo also by the way ?
This place looks absolutely ace, I've driven past several times on deliveries but am yet to find a day off to visit and enjoy!!
I can't wait to go, it's something really different and quirky.
Good luck!! x
I spotted the Rude Shipyard out of the corner of my eye as I sped past on the top deck of a bus this afternoon.
I'm intrigued to know whether the proprietors are fans of The Decemberists...
Carborundum 02-07-2009, 19:52 I went in this place and it felt like Nirvana - that I had reached a sort of Ellyssian fields of Halcyon joy - I cant even begin to describe the total beauy and ethos of this place - like I had entered another world - you just have to go and experience it for yourself !! If there is an afterlife and heaven it must surely be like the Rude Shipyard ..
I went in a week or so ago after seeing it on Facebook. Had a lovely coffee and a gorgeous home made cake. Sheffield needs more places like this.
writerdeee 22-07-2009, 17:28 I look forward to popping in... sounds great.
gamezone07 26-07-2009, 18:32 chav unemployed pregnant unmarried benefit sucking mothers
My goodness, some really unpleasant comments on here about people on benefits, 'chavs, the scroungers', unemployed: its difficult to believe that so called intellectual and sophicasted minds can be so prejudiced, Lady Star and Mr Carbo particularly post some very offensive stuff and casual remarks about chavs, etc, its quite shocking to think i must often be in the same venues etc, as these anti working class misanthropes, sad really
oh, and I notice L/S never makes the same comments about migrants, etc of course, these just add to the cultural fabric of Sheffield, the working class must just make way for them, Its also very revealing that most posters havent pulled them up about their terminology, ok to mouth off about the poor is it?
Leaving that aside i'm hoping to go to the R/Y tonight to see Peter David and the Payroll Union, they sound great: old americana, folk, etc, this cafe and now the fantastic and deliberately inexpensive COOP (great for us proles) is great news for Sharrow.
WhyoleKyote 27-07-2009, 19:57 I went into the Rude Shipyard 2 weeks ago shortly after opening time. Nice place although I did have it all to myself. The coffee and cake was very nice as was the staff. It certainly seemed to me to be a cosy place although I found it to be on the smallside. As I remember two small tables and a settee for 2. I was told at the time that there was a room upstairs but I wonder if the atmosphere is the same?
The embarrassing thing here (for me anyway) is asking if its ok to sit at a table where somebody else is sat at. I am not a book reader myself but it does look as though it wants to attract people to come along and read a book whilst drinking a coffee and eating a bun. However this could result in people hogging a decent table for a while and putting passing trade off as the place looks full.
Besides the above negatives I would like to and will be visiting The Rude Shipyard again (space permitting) and wish the owners luck in their new business.
Place looks great from the outside. Keep meaning to pop in!
caustic101 02-08-2009, 17:52 it's just the best place in the city for coffee and reading the paper. lots of love to The Rude Shipmates x
I must say this is a really really excellent cafe ! Has anyone been to Halo also by the way ?
Yes-- nice, friendly, good coffee, good food, good cake, generous folk - they just need to do a better job of promoting themselves.
numero uno 10-08-2009, 14:10 I drove past it a coupe of times wondering what it was?? The name caught my eye..
Powerpuff6HR 04-09-2009, 14:37 My bus route into town takes me past the rude shipyard and the look of the building catches my eye each time! So i've been eager to visit for quite a while now. Hopefully i'll be round quite soon. :hihi:
Captain Cod 11-09-2009, 16:21 Er, hello??? Perhaps you don't know where this cafe is, but it's only just opened, and isn't far from Bragazzi's, and Matteo never has a load of chavs in his place - the description given seems to be of the feckless middleclasses who let little johnny roam free, so he can better develop his unique personality - a chav wouldn't have wasted money on a hot chocolate for a kid!
I agree, as a friend of Matt Bragazzi's I can say that his clientele are all smashing, lovely folk and he appreciates each and every one of you [that should get me free coffee on the house] Personally though, I wouldn't judge a place on one experience and gdwink may have had an unpleassant experience, I'm still not perturbed by this and am still looking forward to visiting The Rude Shipyard, even if for the name alone-which has totally captured my imagination.
Went for breakfast here yesterday, absolutley delicious! This place is brilliant, I am so glad I found it!
They seem to have some interesting evenings going on too. I will definitely be spending more time there.
Ms Macbeth 19-10-2009, 08:31 Threads merged. Please search for recent threads before starting new ones. Thanks
Hic Kid Horn 24-07-2010, 10:57 This place is brilliant. Easily the best cafe in Sheffield. A bold statement I realise, but I cant think of anywhere else with even half the personality. The place is a treasure trove of great books too.
Read on their website that they put a few folk gigs on as well so i'd be interested to see what they are like as the place has small rooms - very intimate i imagine.
gularscute 24-07-2010, 14:01 Everything about the place suits my tastes. Great food, great coffee, books, live roots music, friendly proprietors, quaint decor, an unpretentious bohemian atmosphere. It's wonderful to see that something like this can open in times of bland, chain cafe homogeneity and become a success.
The only thing that counts against it is the size of the place, it's a bit off putting to a claustrophobe like me.
I'd like to add that Pete David and the Payroll Union are probably the best band in the city at the moment. They have an incredible sense of melody and write songs that are up there with the best of the Americana bands.
Diamond Sea 27-08-2010, 21:00 This place, so cute, although I must admit at first glance may seem a little bit contrived and dare I say pretentious?
When I walked in for the first time; couldn't help but get the feeling of everything purposely dishevelled, and misplaced; sort of like dipping a diamond in mud.. and these factors obviously acquire a certain type of customer, and I think that alot of the locals wouldn't fit the brief..maybe i'm being a little dramatic in my analogy, but you get my drift?
I think i'd feel a bit out of place if I went there on a regular basis.
I mean I get the whole bohemia and love the vibe; it just feels a little forced but it is a lovely place all the same, and I think the idea of live music is absolutely genius.
And although when I went, it was fairly quiet when I walked through the door I was greeted by polite staff. (Although I must admit slightly sneery customers)
.. heard talk of bragazzis which I love, and think i prefer, but then again its all a matter of preference; I just feel bragazzis is a little more genuine.
Overall, I think s7 as an area of Sheffield is such a dynamic place, with a large range of people from different backgrounds, obviously the area has its downfalls, but if anything i think its one of the most cultured places in this city, with people from all walks of life- contrary to the pregnant chavs remark!
Most of all, I love the fact that I can walk down the road get a decent coffee and not pay through the roof for it.
I mean if you’re gonna drink coffee make it a good one :)
Just returned home after a visit to The Rude Shipyard and feel very disappointed. I have heard lots of positive things about the place and decided to try it with two friends. We ordered two full English breakfasts and a huevos rancheros and were told we would have to wait for 30 minutes. Fair enough. It started badly with 3 minute luke warm coffees. We then had to wait 80 minutes for our food. One plate came out, followed by the other 2 10 minutes later, which incidentally, were not 'full' by any means. We were given our mushrooms 5 minutes after we had finished the food. We were all disappointed with the service, especially as we were given £2.50 off the bill. More of an insult really. I wish I had gone to Bohemian instead.
mickey mouse 15-11-2010, 01:43 very nice ,abbeydale road need more places like this..
iheartsheff 15-11-2010, 13:25 I love the shipyard, it's pretty much my coffee/breakfast/brunch place of choice. I like the fact that they have lots of books around and everything is miss matched.
Their chocolate brownies must be the best in sheffield.
amplatypus 15-11-2010, 15:24 Unexpected little gem. Love it.
Bulgarian 15-11-2010, 15:48 Their chocolate brownies must be the best in sheffield.
The Dutch recipe ones ?
iheartsheff 16-11-2010, 16:11 No just the normal types.... unless they have branched out.
kitsuneyo 23-11-2010, 20:34 I've driven past this place a few times and thought it was a model shop or something. Mrs Kitsuneyo and I will definitely give it a try :)
forumperson 07-09-2011, 10:41 I've been to the Rude Shipyard twice. My first time experience was nice. It was quiet. However, my second time visit was so so. A group of people with a toddler dominated the place and it was not so nice. I guess that some people are not so publically minded at times.
snappakippa 15-09-2011, 14:11 Hey thats how Beethoven started
this place still open?
Just, from what I hear they've become a co-operative now, which usually means the end is coming. Which would be a massive shame, I might add.
coco_custard 28-04-2012, 15:21 Apparently the co-operative thing is working out very well for them. I love this place; the staff are friendly and the Guinness Cake is the best I've tasted.
I often go on a Thursday night where you can take your own wine and for £7.50 get corkage, dinner and a slice of cake. The food is superb; they have started doing a dinner and two sides as the mani meal. Homemade bread is recommended. :)
jsmith2009 28-04-2012, 17:16 hi is it open on sunday ta jeff
coco_custard 28-04-2012, 17:27 It is, I've heard they do a mean breakfast on a Sunday but I've never been myself on that day.
